Some comments on here are ridiculous. Eric did everything he could. You don't understand the hours spent behind the riding, the cameras, the fame. Behind all that is hours and hours spent together, bonding, and learning to trust one another. Do you know how much trust you need to jump a four foot course, let alone a six foot course. My first pony passed away 5 years ago, there isn't a moment that goes by where I don't wish he wasn't with me. There is so much more to it then you could imaine. RIP
It's so sad and shocking, gets me crying everytime, they adored each other, anyone could see that, but I truly admire Eric for being so professional, of course he would be in shock, but I would have been in pieces. Having a bond with a horse is the best thing about being an equestrian, but losing that bond rips you apart. :( So here my comment, to such a beautiful and majestic horse and rider. May you R.I.P Hickstead you absolute legend that will never be forgotten. <3
this is supposed to be a professional rider, he must have known what was happening to his horse. Of course he wouldn't have been happy watching his partner die. I blame breeders who have created a lot of purebred horses through incest and inherited genetic anomalies and health problems because of it. They don't care about the horse's pain and bad health. It's all performance, performance, performance.
That is soo sad,,,,I think Eric Lamaze at first thought the horse had just lost his balance and fell then when he started moving his leg`s that was him trying to get up when once Hickstead starting shaken Eric went all still and just stared in shocked,,,,When my horse fall`s my first thought is too push the horse onto her feet.
guys you really need to stop arguing over a video. i feel sorry for Eric and for hickstead having to go threw that but its already happened nothing we can do so there is no point arguing ove it xx
People, some of you are really disgusting! Are you serious? ..."OMG the poor thing"... What? That's not a thing! Horses are truly divine beings - living creatures with a soul! Hello?
To many of you assholes, they're nothing but status symbols! I`ve seen so many people compensating their poor ego by controlling these beings that have more beauty, intelligence, pride and emotions than most of you fat, posh degenerates. If you really respect horses, don't make them jump until they croak.
Awh. this made me cry, Just imagining if that was one of my horses. I would probly just sit there crying , not knowing what to do, while people are trying to save him. ): That poor rider.
this isso awfull eric and hickstead where an amazing team, i feel so bad for eric he so confuseed he though it was just another show , andall of a sodun he like what the heck is going on , that isso sad
..i can sadly say this has happened to me...its the most awful thing in the entire world..traumatizing terrifying the worst thing on the planet to go through...my horse though bucked me off before he passed of a heart attack...it happens so quickly it takes time to sink in...this is how i lost my appy...ive been there..felt this..dont judge someone thats in a situation you have never been in..this is truly horrible and sad...my heart goes out to them still...
this was a horse of a lifetime and its very unlikely that we will see another horse of this kind of calibre in our lifetime, so instead of fighting over whether horse riding is a spot or not, we should be respecting the billion dollar that for eric lamaze, will never in his lifetime be replaced. RIP Hickstead, if he had to die, I'm glad that he died doing what he loved most in life.
These two were amazing!!!! Its easy to sit at your computer and judge, and imagine what you would have done or what you think he should have done. Its alot different when you are right there watching it happen, when its happening to you. Imagine that was you riding your horse, and the horse went down with you on it. Without being ignorant just think of what you would do. You would be in shock, wondering whats happening, why is my horse laying on the ground, what do you do? Its not easy.
a lot of people are saying that you have to cool a horse ou t properly which is SO TRUE!!!! and very important! but you can't just trot out of the ring. all the riders here go to a separate ring and jog the horse then walk them to properly cool them down. they can't just trot out of the arena because that'd be dangerous to bystanders. i just want to clear up that the horses do get cooled down immediately but not at the exact second the round is over for obvious reasons.
@mgblue you ass hole. you know nothing. he kindly pulled the reins over his head and called for help. eric lamaze loves that horse. he was in shock. and when a horse is on the ground like that you have to be very careful. you need to shut the hell up and get your facts straight. so shut the fuck up. show some respect asshole.
plus, me majoring in equine veternary studies, a horse cannot go from such a fast workout to slow paced walking after jumping at that height & the body working that hard. The gut needs to work its way back to normal blood pressure w/ transitions from canter to trot in intervals. i know lots of people do not do that, & its a shame Hickstead had to be the victum, but working as he did at the pace he was at, a long cool down was necessary. No blame to Eric at all.
@mgblue He was having a heart attack.. Thats something serious, which requires prefesionals, instead of rubbing his horse he let the vets get to him as fast as possible. These 2 were an amazing team and he loved that horse
@RidingTripp He didn't have a heart attack, his aorta broke. That's very serious, and even professionals can't help the horse if that happens. Very sad though...
@mgblue um a horses hoofs can kill if you are in the wrong spot... and also you horse has just fallen on you and they just dont fall... and you are seeing your horse die infront of you... hed be in a lot of shock...
@mgblue Ok, so if your horse fell over you wouldn't be in complete shock, erik tried to get hickstead up before realizing that he couldn't move, that's when he started shaking, erik stood out of the way so the vets could get to him as fast as they could. I don't think that hickstead could be comforted either. He loved him.
It's tragic... but he was doing the job he loved and was bred for... not standing in a field waiting for the knackerman's bullet... We had a beautiful mare go the same way.... and I know that my old gelding feels the same - we keep trying to retire him but he won't let us!
I just want to say - show jumpers - you have a habit of making horses go straight to walk after a round of show jumping - it damages the horses heart to make them stand still or walk when their hearts are beating fast (same as for human athletes), make sure you always trot and canter around a few times before walking so as not injure the heart.
So sad....You can see both he and rider were both just as shocked when he went down..RIP Hickstead your amazing..I applaud those who moved in so quick.
He finished his round, Loved every minute...died doing what he loved, with whom he loved...can't have been the best way to die though, a heart attack...just shows you, fine one minute and gone the next!
Poor Hickstead, was worked too hard in this cruel sport, Horses should be out in the fields eating daisies not being forced to jump over fences for human pleasure.
@footyball66 as you would know if you were a horse person, Hickstead was one of the best jumpers ever. He loved and literally put his heart into it. he died of a heart attack, that had no connection to jumping, he just had a heart faliure that they didn't catch in time... RIP Hickstead, you are still very much missed
i can't believe people are arguing about whether or not horseback riding is a sport in this kind of video. Show eric lamaze and hickstead some respect, and stop fighting with each other as a horse is dying in the video. God people, that's ridiculous.
@alliencedful In which case you'll finally understand how Horseback riding is a sport that is at least as challenging as, if not more than, snowboarding.
If you can't see how hard the rider works, you must be blind.
Also, just so your facts are straight, Horseback riding helps you build and strengthen your calf, thigh, abdominal, shoulder and back muscles. I don't know about you, but that sounds like a workout to me. This isn't just opinion, either, it's fact. Don't believe me? Look it up.
@alliencedful If Horseback Riding is just sitting on a horse, then snowboarding is nothing more than standing on a board. And how can you say the rider just "hangs on"? Look at the rider! He's perfectly positioned to go over each jump; there's no hanging on, it's balance! He's not hanging on as the horse jumps, he's jumping with the horse.
The horse and rider are a team, that's why the connection's important. They can't win without the other, just like a snowboarder can't win without his board.
@alliencedful We control our horses with our legs, body, seat, and arms. We need to have the physical strength to keep our balance while working each limb separately. Sometimes your legs are doing two different things while your arms are doing something else. The strength it takes to control fine moments it amazing. Imagine moving your whole body, but keeping your legs absolutely still.
@alliencedful Yes, you can just sit on a horse and not do anything, but even then, when you get off your legs and abs will be sore. Then you add posting, staying balanced, position, moving with the horse, going into two-point, and much more.. We work muscles from doing half-halts where we get contact with a horse with only our ring fingers, to jumping where we lift our body so precisely to keep ourselves and the horse balanced - and no resting on your hands, or you'll lose it.
@alliencedful, First, this is a video of how the beautiful horse Hickstead died. No one appreciates you discrediting the amazing horse and rider, they deserve all the credit they're given.
Second, horseback riding isn't just sitting in a saddle. There has to be trust between the rider and horse, and balance, communication, and control play a big role in the sport. And it IS a sport, otherwise why would it be considered an Olympic Sport? Don't talk about a sport you know nothing about.
@LanguageCrazy it's a sport, for the horse. All the rider actually does is, hang on. since when does a connection between an animal and human beign classify as a sport? bullshit
@alliencedful what is even the point of you commenting on this on the first place?? keep you dumb ass thoughts too yourself because they are so unimportant and rude. don't say something is stupid or easy if you have never done it. I would LOVE to see you get on a horse and do what eric and hickstead, or another rider does. You would fall flat on your huge ass and probably die. which your making everyone want right now.
@myhorsewon1st Back when this was a news story covered in my country (where the horse came from) extensivly (headlines), it seemed such a stupid thing to be on the news i had to say it was irrelevant the horse died, ever since i've been getting inbox messages by butthurt 14 year olds. Stfu already cunts
@alliencedful you obviously know nothing about horses and how hard it actually is to do what eric and hickstead did. You probably say all these things because you want the attention. And maybe you have tried to ride and failed so hard, you have to make it into something its not to feel better about yourself. your kind make me sad
why does youtube always have to have some jackass who comes and says some horrible commment that makes every comment box and argument. there are certain things argue about but this isnt one of them... people are fucked up....
@alliencedful ok so first off if yur gonna caalll me a bitch say bitch.. adding an a isnt making less worse or worse or what u were going there, second free speach is true but just cuz have the right to say it doesnt mean you, and that is what i am trying to say, also the way u phrased this is a lil conusing cuz ur throwing a double negative in there, just fyi but i have the RIGHT to be offended as much as you have the right to go around calling people biatches, ok hun :D
@pinkpatch102 good for you. And i wasn't calling you a bitch in this instance the word was used as an adjective. but maybe i should have. And no you do not have the right not to be offended. You can be offended but you don't have the right not to be. It's not a difficult distinction
@alliencedful@alliencedful I ride horses on a semi professional level i think i could learn to stand on a board thank you very much Stupid inconsiderate idiotic ***face i would love to see you ride at this level and when you go galloping up to a 5 foot fence im going to laugh when you fall and break something and by the way snowboarding is a rip off of surfing so your sport copied dumb***
@ilovemyjazzy1 Haha hilarious. Anny normal person will say snowboarding>horse riding
I have never riden a horse and i don't intend to, we have cars and motorcycles these days, and on snowy slopes i'll use my board (which it takes athleticism and full body controle to use, and some guts). I'll lol when you try to do a grind with a snowboard and... break your stupid pre puberty face
@alliencedful you're a worthless human being. If you ever got a pet, i would feel bad for you, 'cause they would hurt you because your a jackass. you dont know anything about horses, so no one is going to give a fuck about what you say. learn something, than come back and talk about shit like snowboarding, and try and say it is a sport. if you hadn't noticed, horseback riding has many more olympic games event than snowboarding does, or ever will have. so get you messed up head outta your ass
@alliencedful I'mnot spoiled. I have to do all of my work, pay for my horse, and still get amazinggrades in school.Which in turn has made me a better person than you willever be. And if it isn't a sport, than how do people die from it, just as snowboarders do?
@alliencedful and this is another. ust so you know, 1 is definitely not enough.
You ask me what sport I do. I'll say Equestrian. You tell me: it's not a sport. you tell me: it's easy You tell me it takes no skill. You tell me: we just sit there. You tell me : we are not athletes. You tell me: its just a silly hobby. But I ask you: have you ever trusted something so unpredictable who, with one mishap can kill us?
@1nikomi that's the sport? trusting an animal to do good? Well then watching sports is a sport to, i trust the human animal fernando torres to score. but he doesn't sadly
@alliencedful at least horses have a heart and a brain, which is more than i can say for you. And are you acually commincuting with an animal, not just sitting there hoping he "does good"
@1nikomi right so now communicating is a sport to. Next thing you know sitting on your ass is a sport, or sleeping, or eating a fucking slice op pizza
@alliencedful Are you kidding me? It can take YEARS for a dressage rider to build up the strength in their mid-section and legs, and the same goes for a show jumper and the development of their jumping posture. Then again, it's always funny to see some know-it-all get on a horse and expect it to obey your every command with a slap on the rump. Next thing they know, they're (and I'm putting you in that category) ass over tea kettle.
@alliencedful Have you ever fallen from 10 feet up, going 35mph and simply brushed yourself off? Have you ever cantered full speed towards a solid obstacle? Have you ever jumped something that's taller than you? So before you underestimate us, think to yourself do you understand the true bond required? Have you ever had a team mate ten times your size?
@alliencedful Have you been rolled on by a horse, been in a come for 9 months, and now has long term memory lose. That is what happened to one of my friends. So, have you? cause it seems to me that you're pretty fucking messed up
@1nikomi is that supposed to be an argument of some sort? your friend got fucked up by a horse, is that an argument pro horses or against horses? pro horse sport or contra horse sport?
I'd say it's agaisnt horse sport. You're making no fucking sense, please stop replying you don't know how to make a case for something
inteligent comment would have been what do you define as a sport. my argument for it being a sport would be, there is physical exertion and there are rules to the contests.
Never snow boarded but down hill ski'd quite a bit have to try it one day.
@alliencedful Ask yourself that, but please don't judge us because you know what you can trust a horse more then a human..So people who say horse riding is easy and takes no effort think again
look you are so stupid. you dont intend to try to rideso you cant talk. it takes so much muscle and concentration and balance. and you are controling an animal! you never know what is going to happen and you are on your stupid little board which just takes balance. you dont know what you are talking about maybe you should try something before you bash it.
@brandhorstw311 why would i try to ride a horse. I couldn't care less for horse riding. has to be clear to you by now i don't give a shit. Horse riding is a past time not a sport. Proof? small chubby people can easily ride a horse. You won't see annyone lose wieght by riding a horse. And no i don't consider chess or darts a sport. chess is a, verry well respected thinking game, and darts is just accurate throwing shit.
@alliencedful ohhhhh so you want a sport that will make you loose weight because your fat and wanna loose a few pounds! great, I'm glad we have an understanding now!
@myhorsewon1st 190 lbs 6ft 3. I have my own fitness at home so i'm mostly muscle. No i don't need to lose weight i need to gain weight. riding a horse won't help me with neither.
@alliencedful yes. the horse is a living thing and that just makes riding even more of a task. We have to have a bond with them in order to ride. lets see you get on a horse and do a jumping round. i guarantee you WILL fall off. although i would be afraid for the horse because you would have no patience and hurt it when you don't communicate with it well enough to let it understand what you are asking and so does something you don't want it too....
CONT - His horse was down his beautiful pride and joy he knew inside and out was down. He didn't know why or how. Obviously those willing to comment so harshly have never lost a horse in such dire circumstance as this. I have and in the heat of the moment anything goes. You can look back and what if but nothing will take back a aortic rupture.
He hardly hit him in the head. Come on he was trying to regain his attention to stop him flaying about, which any horse person knows a panicked horse on the ground is very dangerous. Try stopping a colic horse going down. Not going to happen but you try to focus them to stop them twisting their gut, you attract them around the eyes. It all happened so fast.
@alliencedful Hickstead did this because he loved it if a horse doesn't want to do it they would let you know and for the record can you jump 5 feet run at full speed for 5 minutes love something so much you die doing it? hickstead was the pride and joy of me and now he is gone and you dare to say something like that? hickstead has accomplished more than you when he was only 3 and how old are you now like 30? die you stupid son of a gun i don't ever want to see your comments again
haven't seen anything funnier then this.

I kep reading Hickstead died of a heart attack. He didin't die of this at all.
He died of a rupture of the aorta, which is much more uncommon than a heart attack for a horse.
You should read a little about Hickstead before saying anything.

i can't believe people are arguing about whether or not horseback riding is a sport in this kind of video.

LanguageCrazy 1 month ago 19
@LanguageCrazy except i fully control my board and the horse is a living thing which actually does all the work.
alliencedful 1 month ago
@alliencedful We control our horses with our legs, body, seat, and arms. We need to have the physical strength to keep our balance while working each limb separately. Sometimes your legs are doing two different things while your arms are doing something else. The strength it takes to control fine moments it amazing. Imagine moving your whole body, but keeping your legs absolutely still.

@03firefly I would thumb this up if it would let me but it's not....
horseygal411 1 month ago
@alliencedful Yes, you can just sit on a horse and not do anything, but even then, when you get off your legs and abs will be sore. Then you add posting, staying balanced, position, moving with the horse, going into two-point, and much more.. We work muscles from doing half-halts where we get contact with a horse with only our ring fingers, to jumping where we lift our body so precisely to keep ourselves and the horse balanced - and no resting on your hands, or you'll lose it.
03firefly 1 month ago
omg! you can see hickstead start to wobble at 2:04, i feel so so sorry for eric, and the pain that poor horse must've gone through in panic..
you could see in the horses face how much he loved to do what he was doing R.I.P hickstead, your up there now with the other great equine athletes..
thefemaleboss91 1 month ago
@alliencedful, First, this is a video of how the beautiful horse Hickstead died. No one appreciates you discrediting the amazing horse and rider, they deserve all the credit they're given.
Second, horseback riding isn't just sitting in a saddle. There has to be trust between the rider and horse, and balance, communication, and control play a big role in the sport. And it IS a sport, otherwise why would it be considered an Olympic Sport? Don't talk about a sport you know nothing about.
LanguageCrazy 1 month ago
@LanguageCrazy it's a sport, for the horse. All the rider actually does is, hang on. since when does a connection between an animal and human beign classify as a sport? bullshit
alliencedful 1 month ago
@alliencedful what is even the point of you commenting on this on the first place?? keep you dumb ass thoughts too yourself because they are so unimportant and rude. don't say something is stupid or easy if you have never done it. I would LOVE to see you get on a horse and do what eric and hickstead, or another rider does. You would fall flat on your huge ass and probably die. which your making everyone want right now.
myhorsewon1st 1 month ago
@myhorsewon1st Back when this was a news story covered in my country (where the horse came from) extensivly (headlines), it seemed such a stupid thing to be on the news i had to say it was irrelevant the horse died, ever since i've been getting inbox messages by butthurt 14 year olds. Stfu already cunts
alliencedful 1 month ago
@alliencedful you obviously know nothing about horses and how hard it actually is to do what eric and hickstead did. You probably say all these things because you want the attention. And maybe you have tried to ride and failed so hard, you have to make it into something its not to feel better about yourself. your kind make me sad

I have never riden a horse and i don't intend to, we have cars and motorcycles these days, and on snowy slopes i'll use my board (which it takes athleticism and full body controle to use, and some guts). I'll lol when you try to do a grind with a snowboard and... break your stupid pre puberty face

@1nikomi 1 comment wasn't enough you fucking waste of space? horse riding is for fucking posh people and i hate all you spoiled 14 year old bitches
alliencedful 1 month ago
@alliencedful I'mnot spoiled. I have to do all of my work, pay for my horse, and still get amazinggrades in school.Which in turn has made me a better person than you willever be. And if it isn't a sport, than how do people die from it, just as snowboarders do?
1nikomi 1 month ago
@alliencedful and this is another. ust so you know, 1 is definitely not enough.
You ask me what sport I do. I'll say Equestrian. You tell me: it's not a sport. you tell me: it's easy You tell me it takes no skill. You tell me: we just sit there. You tell me : we are not athletes. You tell me: its just a silly hobby. But I ask you: have you ever trusted something so unpredictable who, with one mishap can kill us?
1nikomi 1 month ago
@1nikomi that's the sport? trusting an animal to do good? Well then watching sports is a sport to, i trust the human animal fernando torres to score. but he doesn't sadly
alliencedful 1 month ago
@alliencedful at least horses have a heart and a brain, which is more than i can say for you. And are you acually commincuting with an animal, not just sitting there hoping he "does good"
1nikomi 1 month ago
@1nikomi right so now communicating is a sport to. Next thing you know sitting on your ass is a sport, or sleeping, or eating a fucking slice op pizza
alliencedful 1 month ago

@alliencedful Are you kidding me? It can take YEARS for a dressage rider to build up the strength in their mid-section and legs, and the same goes for a show jumper and the development of their jumping posture. Then again, it's always funny to see some know-it-all get on a horse and expect it to obey your every command with a slap on the rump. Next thing they know, they're (and I'm putting you in that category) ass over tea kettle.
PaulSaysShezam 1 month ago
@alliencedful Have you ever fallen from 10 feet up, going 35mph and simply brushed yourself off? Have you ever cantered full speed towards a solid obstacle? Have you ever jumped something that's taller than you? So before you underestimate us, think to yourself do you understand the true bond required? Have you ever had a team mate ten times your size?

1nikomi 1 month ago
@1nikomi is that supposed to be an argument of some sort? your friend got fucked up by a horse, is that an argument pro horses or against horses? pro horse sport or contra horse sport?
I'd say it's agaisnt horse sport. You're making no fucking sense, please stop replying you don't know how to make a case for something
alliencedful 1 month ago
@alliencedful ignore Nikomi the guy he is a fool.
inteligent comment would have been what do you define as a sport. my argument for it being a sport would be, there is physical exertion and there are rules to the contests.
Never snow boarded but down hill ski'd quite a bit have to try it one day.

@alliencedful Ask yourself that, but please don't judge us because you know what you can trust a horse more then a human..So people who say horse riding is easy and takes no effort think again
1nikomi 1 month ago
look you are so stupid. you dont intend to try to rideso you cant talk. it takes so much muscle and concentration and balance. and you are controling an animal! you never know what is going to happen and you are on your stupid little board which just takes balance. you dont know what you are talking about maybe you should try something before you bash it.
brandhorstw311 1 month ago
@brandhorstw311 why would i try to ride a horse. I couldn't care less for horse riding. has to be clear to you by now i don't give a shit. Horse riding is a past time not a sport. Proof? small chubby people can easily ride a horse. You won't see annyone lose wieght by riding a horse. And no i don't consider chess or darts a sport. chess is a, verry well respected thinking game, and darts is just accurate throwing shit.
alliencedful 1 month ago
@alliencedful ohhhhh so you want a sport that will make you loose weight because your fat and wanna loose a few pounds! great, I'm glad we have an understanding now!
myhorsewon1st 1 month ago
@myhorsewon1st 190 lbs 6ft 3. I have my own fitness at home so i'm mostly muscle. No i don't need to lose weight i need to gain weight. riding a horse won't help me with neither.
alliencedful 1 month ago
@alliencedful yes. the horse is a living thing and that just makes riding even more of a task. We have to have a bond with them in order to ride. lets see you get on a horse and do a jumping round. i guarantee you WILL fall off. although i would be afraid for the horse because you would have no patience and hurt it when you don't communicate with it well enough to let it understand what you are asking and so does something you don't want it too....

Obviously those willing to comment so harshly have never lost a horse in such dire circumstance as this. I have and in the heat of the moment anything goes. You can look back and what if but nothing will take back a aortic rupture.
benhoppy 2 months ago
He hardly hit him in the head. Come on he was trying to regain his attention to stop him flaying about, which any horse person knows a panicked horse on the ground is very dangerous. Try stopping a colic horse going down. Not going to happen but you try to focus them to stop them twisting their gut, you attract them around the eyes. It all happened so fast.
