Gates was acting disorderly. He was told to calm down and warn that he was acting disorderly but he continued. So he was arrested. I don't see anything wrong about that. The cop did not arrest Gates just cuz he's black.
According to the report, he kept asking for the officer's name and badge number. Gates got tired of it and arrested him.
They dropped the charges because it was a lawsuit waiting to happen. If he wanted Gates to calm down, he needed to only get in his car and drive away. if he wanted gates to stop asking, needed to only write it down on a piece of paper.

It was him yelling, making comments about the cops mother, etc. And I'm aware that the cop doesn't have to be racist to be in the wrong. Thats my point. He isn't racist. But Gates played the race card. Gates and the media made it about race which is wrong.
Maybe the cop was on some kind of power trip and he was wrong to arrest Gates...or maybe Gates was acting disorderly so he was arrested. No one knows...only the cop and Gates know what really happened. Therefore, especially the president, shouldn't be passing judgment on the cop and making this about race. That's my only point. The president was wrong to say that the cop "acted stupidly" cuz he wasn't there and he's biased being Gates' friend.

If you scream at a cop at a crime scene you wil be arrested. As far as the police were concerned, a crime was reported, and until they ascertained that there was no crime, it was a crime scene.
The fact that Gates proved that he lived there did not prove that he was the one who had broken in, and the officer was concerned for his safety and wanted to do his job and secure the area.

They dropped the charges because it was a lawsuit waiting to happen. If he wanted Gates to calm down, he needed to only get in his car and drive away. if he wanted gates to stop asking, needed to only write it down on a piece of paper.

I think Gates was the one who "acted stupidly". He should have just been calm, stepped outside the home like the officer asked him to, and showed his ID.

Of course he'd he'd put in HIS report (Written by him, mind you) that he gave his name and badge number. Whether he actually DID is a different matter entirely.
Think about it, the guy was probably being a jerk in the way he asked for it and the cop resists giving it. That happens ALL OF THE TIME. Seriously, how can you prove a cop didn't give his name and badge number?
If i=he said in his report that he didn't give his name and badge number, he'd get in so much trouble.

Did you read the report?
At some point, the officer entered the house (I assume Gates LET him in since there is no mention of gates trying to bar entrance). Gates SHOWED Identification.

How can you prove that whatever Gates said actually happened? The point is that Gates was acting disorderly and he was warned. Therefore he was arrested. And it wasn't just him asking for his name and badge number over and over again. It was him yelling, making comments about the cops mother, etc. And I'm aware that the cop doesn't have to be racist to be in the wrong. Thats my point. He isn't racist. But Gates played the race card. Gates and the media made it about race which is wrong.

Maybe the cop was on some kind of power trip and he was wrong to arrest Gates...or maybe Gates was acting disorderly so he was arrested. No one knows...only the cop and Gates know what really happened. Therefore, especially the president, shouldn't be passing judgment on the cop and making this about race. That's my only point. The president was wrong to say that the cop "acted stupidly" cuz he wasn't there and he's biased being Gates' friend.

Sure, but there in no discounting that the report has many holes in it. I think issues like this would be quickly resolved if police officers had to wear recording devices at all times, while on duty.

President didn't make this about Race. he did say we still have racial problems, which is a fact.

He linked the 2 though. If he didn't think it was about race then why mention it after saying the cop "acted stupidly". Why not just say that the cop "acted stupidly" and end it there. Why go on about the history of racial problems in the country?

The owner of the house was arrested after showing his ID so it doesn't make sense to hear it. Think about it.
Person calls cops for suspected B and E, Arrive to find a Black Man, Black man shows ID to prove he's the owner of the house, Black man arrested for Disorderly Conduct. WTF?
that's like saying 1+1=3.
I'm not saying that this case was profiling or the cop was racist, but the whole situation could have been diffused before getting out of control.

Actually, more people supposedly know what happened. There were backup officers and neghbors standing outside their homes. Everyone who has made a statement so far says that gates was acting out of control and the cop did right.
