  • I'm a fellow flute player and I'm shocked the different sounds possible we can make on our instrument. In this video you showed me things I didnt even know where possible. U got to tell me how you bend the sound of your notes like that. Gorgeous sound. Excellent performance

  • You're getting sounds out of a flute I've never even heard before! Enjoyed it!

  • Wow. :) You have a lot of talent.

  • Wow that's great!!!

  • holy shit man you make that flute shine

  • like the sound at 0:41

  • To everyone that keeps telling me "it's a metronome" thank you so much!! I would have NEVER have KNOWN THAT!!!!! Thank god there are smart people like you out there to tell me these things....after all....I used to think that a metronome was a device that evenly measured the passage of time...but evidently that is COMPLETELY different from what a clock does... Thank you all for pointing out my ignorance and I look forward to seeing your results in the study of quantum physics..dummys......

  • Great playing. What make and model flute is that? Notice you have a difference head joint too.

  • wow..great!!! amazing control...

  • wow..great!!!

  • u are absolutly amazing :)

  • AWESOME! THANK YOU

  • I played flute for seven years and stopped when I moved to a place that didn't have a big music scene. I wish I would've kept playing. Maybe I'd be half as talented as you.

  • try it with the metronome playing beats 2 and 4 instead of 1 and 3.

  • Nice:):):)

  • IT LOOKS SO EASY BUT ITS SOOO HARD!!!!!

  • how do you get that slide effect you have at about 1:15 ?

is it by just doing a really slow slur?

  • To everyone who keeps telling me that it was a metronome....I KNOW.....I'm a fucking musician myself....it was a JOKE.....Jesus Christ....you people are the reason I don't do stand up comedy......haha...

  • @Zatoichi444 Well, I laughed.. On the inside, but still.

  • verry good but sax man my selff :)

  • Dude your clock is SUPER LOUD.....maybe you should buy a digital one?

  • @Zatoichi444 that's not a clock, that's a metronome. LOL! anyway that made my day xD

  • @Zatoichi444 thats the metronome -.-

  • @Zatoichi444 thats not a clock smart one its a metronome. helps keep the beat. if you played an instamint you would know what it is.

  • @REDeyedTREEfrog55 Did you read the comment below? I do play an "instrument" several in fact.....what the hell is an "Instamint"? sounds like a good breath freshener.

  • @Zatoichi444 i read that right after i posted and i regreted it no need to sware.

  • @Zatoichi444

I don't know, but if it's a flute made out of glacier mint then I am so there!

  • @Zatoichi444 It's probably a metronome... Awesome playing though

  • @mso872 actually it's a Metro Gnome.....a gnome that lives in a large city....takes the subway etc....

  • @Zatoichi444 dude it's a metrenome...

  • @littlepinklollipop37 Dude, you're stupid as fuck if you think I wasn't kidding when I said that....thanks for pointing out the obvious though.....You're really smart!!!! I can tell!!!!

  • @Zatoichi444 That.... Would be Dr. B. LOL.

  • @Zatoichi444 lol are you serious?

  • @Zatoichi444 Lol, its a metronome, it helps you keep in time to the beat, its suppose to be loud so you can hear it when you are playing

  • @frankiedoodlebug its called a joke.

  • @Zatoichi444

It's a metronome, you little musical genius. =)

  • @Zatoichi444 that's a metronome

  • @Zatoichi444 It's a metronome, not a clock.

  • @EoN604 nah that's a clock for sure

  • @EoN604 captain obvious is obvious

  • @Zatoichi444 its a metronome not a clock!

  • @Zatoichi444 wow, you are retarded.

  • @BD0RN Yeah, I'M retarded......I make a joke that you are not smart enough to get....but I'M retarded...I'm curious...If I'M retarded, then how short is the bus that picks YOU up for school?? I'm guessing it's a two seater...and one of the seats is on the roof....asshole...

  • @Zatoichi444 I like you. :L

  • @Zatoichi444 omg that comment

  • @Zatoichi444 it's a metronome, it tells you how fast you're going... 1,2,3,4,5, etc. :)

  • @zenaxlove69 .....did you read the other comments? or are you just really, really dull, unimaginative and limited in mental capacity? it was a fucking JOKE.....I get it.....I know what a fucking metronome is....it's like a "thing" that measures "time"...which from a physics viewpoint.....doesn't exist......either you're trying to provoke a response from me (success) or you are a fucking total idiot.......i don't know...maybe sarcasm hasn't reached your country yet....wait for it...

  • @Zatoichi444 Sorry, :P you're just dumb to not know what a metronome was

  • @Zatoichi444 lol

  • Hey, I want to learn how to improvise jazz flute. I have played for about 8 years now, but I have no idea where to start to learn jazz improvisation. Thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • @batista6224 haha

  • bravo!!

  • Oh my God, how can you play so fast ?

  • impresive i used to play flute but i stopd but mabe i'll play claranet in early september nice work

  • wow this is amazing! It'd take me several months to be able to BARELY match that. and nice song on the golden headjoint! It really brings out a nice warm sound for you.

  • It sure is jazz, and he's doing it well.

  • some of this is deff worked out, this isin't even jazz!

  • In which case you really should make a new account with a completely different username..

  • @jazzflaout everything improvised is "worked out" . it's always only a matter of degree. listen to charlie parker. whatever you want to call it, his playing sounds good to me

  • @pavetheworldlovely are you joking me? Are you dumb? Why is it called improvisation you moron? Jazz is improvised. A GUY PLAYING AS FAST AS HE CAN FILMING HIMSELF TO PUT A VIDEO OF HIM PLAYING ON YOUTUBE IS NOT JAZZ, AND IS NOT ART. HE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF WHAT HE IS DOING. Is this some kind of thing where you need confidence and want people to go "oooh lalal" because if thats the case, youve got it. But Pave, you need to realize, yes people have licks, but it is improvised.

  • Comment removed

  • @jazzflaout Also, what Herr Schmitz is showing you is one way to develop your ability to improvise. Turn on the metronome and play. He's giving you a gift for free, if you want it.

  • Could you possibly tell me the first part of the jazz scale at 0:00?

Don't wanted to bother, I just really want to play that scale because I'm tired of playing plain blues.

  • that was a blues scale... If you are tired of playing blues the try bebop.

  • The guys who say "they are tired of playing the blues" cant play the blues. I dont know U or your playing, but by that statement I know your deficient in soul...you got a lot to learn!

  • Just terrific from a fellow flute player of 40 years. Fast, tasteful, interesting with different techniques - great tone and control. Get around different tonalities and keys and your unbeatable. Very enjoyable.

  • how did you do that glissando-thing... from 1:10 ?

  • you need an open hole flute. you push down the keys without covering the holes, and you slide your fingers onto the holes. pretty simple, yet hard to do well.

  • oh, one more thing. If you like that pitch bending thing, look up Steve Kujala. He is the best at it, by far. He really is quite a monster.

  • @Hannnnng Pretty much you just slowly play a descending chromatic scale, while bending the pitch with your embouchure or by rolling the flute in/out. Hope that helps ;)

  • flutes in jazz rock.Nice playing

  • ok dude. Look. You looking? good. just checking. You have speed. You have the soul. You just need a freakin good backing track, a good orchestrated performance behind you, and kick ass! this could be beyond what it already is, awsome.

  • Very very good man!

I have tried the flute since 1988.

  • @jcosouza2007 tried?

  • very good

  • Wow, you are really good. And that smooth fall was amazing!

  • i luv metronomes. they r the only thing that can drive me nuts 4 good.....

4 jazz songs (or small melodies), how different is the blowing 4 the flute? i luv jazz. i play the flute. ppl told me its impossible 2 put it 2gthr, u definately proven that wrong. (aka that was awsome!)

  • man! i love the effect of the fall, very smooth... i've got to learn it myself... keep it up :D

  • you make me wish I kept up with my lessons

  • fuck you, Jazz Flute in my case is for warriors of the highest order.

come to the city of Montclair, California and say that shit to my face, I'll send you back on an airplane on al four, with a "jazz flute" up your ass.

  • yeah seriously Jazz is hard. And Exspecially on flute because we are usually have a classical look. I have to do a solo tommorow off the bat with no warning and im freakin out right now

  • Comment removed

  • cool love it:)) love it when flute is "jazzed up" hehe

  • where did you learn to play? :O Any recommendations?

  • Metronome XD reminds me of the good ol days with the piano...

  • kool

  • YOU CAN BLOW REALLY GOOD!!!!!!!!!! call me 509-867-5309

  • AHAHAHHAA

  • WIN

  • hah

  • Oh, God! XD;

  • Epic.

  • @lolerpox3000 that's gross dude

  • Whoa, thats a gold flute, your so lucky and you play so good, im just a starter

  • that was AWESOME! im a jazz flute player myself, and i doubt that i could ever do that!!! amazing job =)

  • holly i play flute and u r now my idol!

  • This is NIIIICE

  • bonne realisation originale!!

  • Very interesting clip! I like some of the special effects you are throwing in there such as gliss. and harmonics/singing while playing. Just the opening 5 seconds or something shows you have a great technique. Rhythmically it is well controlled - not many people would have the ability to do a free random improv. alongside a metronome!

  • The real giveaway of your talent level is that acoustical ceiling you're playing under. Most flute players who lack confidence and skill wind up practicing in very live rooms because they like the boost. Good flute players always practice in deadened spaces so as to really hear what you're doing (including what you're doing to SEND your sound out into the fray). Nice playing.

  • @pnebenzahl I disagree. Sir James Galway, a world renown flutist, recommends playing in a room that has good acoustics. Also, if you were to perform on a stage, the stage would mostly likely have good acoustics. There's no reason to practice in a, "deadened" space. Just because you practice in a room with bad acoustics, does not make you good.

  • Also, of course, great playing. :)

  • Would you know any specific scales that make for good jazz improvisation?

The melodic minor has a nice touch to it, but I'm wondering if there is soemthing more specifically 'jazzy'.

  • You are unbelievable. And Im not even a flute player.

  • that swooping descend illustrated mega control!

i commend thee to the max. thats actually amazing

  • sounds like indian music and also sounds like superman and mr. gadget.. otherwise it was amazing! lol

  • I agree with YellowJackets. You won't hear many flute players of this calibre.

Some very interesting techniques to learn from, even in a 1 min 40 sec piece.

  • You're AMAZING.

How do you start learning jazz on flute?

I want to play jazz now, haha.

  • Everybody says blues scales are overdone. I say, THEY'RE UNDER-DONE. Much more to explore.

    C Eb F F# G Bb C Bb G F# F Eb C

Your expression will not come out that much playing Bach. It will come out playing blues, even though it is a boring form that you've heard a million times. Well, Charlie Parker would probably agree with me, if noone else ... just a random structure to explore on, but pregnant with possibilities.

  • what key are you in?

  • Very nice. Now another cool thing would be improvising over a song, any song. Or solo without the metronome.

  • that was a topnatcher dude!

  • this is too cool!

  • e che cazzo! complimenti!

  • hallo Guenther J Schmitz-

wow, ganz großes Kompliment - das ist absolut klasse, was du da machst!!!!

  • Very nice! (Ditch the metronome and post another:D)

  • And this is why I need a flute haha.

  • Thats Baby Making Music....thats what that is!

  • ha! id like to see you play tHat!

  • thats from Anchorman, hes not mocking the video

  • what notes?

  • I love your high notes.

  • The last ten seconds or so of the clip-pretty killer. I'm a huge fan of jazz flute, & I gotta say you're pretty awesome man.

  • et aqualung!!!!!!

  • Hahaha! I love that part of the movie!!!

  • pretty awesome!!

  • good work

  • Not my cup of tea, but still superb, great stuff.

  • hi there bro...great jazz sound. i a self thought flute player. any tips for me on how to catch what's that u re doing..maybe a slow fingering techniques and then top speed. appreciate if u could help.TQ

  • This is wicked, why is this such an unrecognized art!

  • you're a smelly pirate hooker. ;)

  • Tak.....Tak.....Tak......Tak..... ooooooh

    ha haa haa !

  • i want to be able to play like that one day! that was really good!

  • Wow! This is great:D

  • Awesome. Totally awesome.

  • Nice multiphonics!!! I've never heard it done on the flute before!

  • wow thats pretty good! i've just been selected for 1st flute in my school's jazz band, so im browsing for things to pick up on for my soloing!

  • Hey, that's exactly what I'm doing! ^^

  • My school's jazz ensemble doesn't have a flute

    =(

    So i play alto.

  • very beat :S

  • you have some awesome obushure (sp) effects the metronome is rather annyoing you could have got headphones ...

  • Ron Burgandy would dominate you and steal your girl right after. He'd do all this after drinking a 5th of scotch.

  • I'm not much of a jazz person of improve. toward the endish, it kinda sounds like mario theme. just a bit.Nice job. ive got the technique, but don't know how you put it together. and i agree, some sort of an accompaniment would be great.

  • now you play the sax dont you?

  • Really nice. Well done.

  • cool effects...but i kinda lost the feel a bit through there.

  • I couldn't tell much for the notes were fast.. but it sounded a bit like a D major... with a seventh something... I think

  • HOU ARE YOU

    SUPER

  • oh!!!!

    you're greatttt!

i play the flute, have been for 3 years. you make me sound so little and untrained.

    good job

  • exelente!

  • oooooooooooook

  • I like to see something with you accompanied, very nice.

  • love it.

  • Nice...I understand that you are using the metronome to click on beats 2 and 4, the jazz way. I really like your video of "God save the Blues" and I use it with my flute students... Thanks a lot and keep on yor great playing!

  • I am one of those students :P

    You know that one..

    good luck

  • Nice

  • wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • very special, good job.....but next time surely switch off the metronome:-)

  • Excellent playing, sir! Have you looked at any of Bolling's Suites for the flute?

  • put the metronom on the off beat

  • Good idea, next time ok?

  • Very good! What kind of flute are you using?

  • What you see here is a Yamaha student model, open hole, offset G, with a headjoint by Rainer Lafin, Lörrach, Germany

  • dude, you make the flute bad-ass! ROCK ON!!
