It's not the lighting, or the tracking. It's the angle. It may seem counter-intuitive to hold the card facing the camera directly because then the little computer-generated character would be standing horizontal, but the camera can't pick up the symbol well when you hold it at an angle like that. If it bothers you that much the place the camera facing downwards and then you can hold the card flat.
why not just upload these objects into a system with a memory storage then make it voice activated you could then call the little critters out in numbers...
The software needs to have a better way to tracking the code once it is found. The threshhold variation or error and finding is annoying. Once it finds the code, it should track it using an edge detecting and approximation routine.
