really wanted to hear his point--he's a high level pro-but couldnt make it through the epilogue intro--SUGGESTION: show example move, then give theory, then break it down.
Am I the only one that finds this long, rambling to be nothing more than common sense. He rambles for 7 minutes and says that if you lock someone in half guard you're not going to be able to get away. Well no shyt sherlock if you have someone locked in half guard how in the hell would you expect to post out . Maybe next video frank can explain how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for 7 minutes.
This video proves two points. First, habits that work in sport jiu jitsu gi or no gi developes habits that are detrimental when striking is involved. Second, Saulo is right never anchor yourself to your opponent when you are in an inferior position. Roll with Saulo and he will prove it to you. Props to Frank for catching on to this. I have been teaching this for years. Nothing is new it is just discovered.
this is one of the best tips ive ever seen anyone give for bjj in regards to mma...
I respect mir alot too for straight up saying brock was more technical and beat him via talent. its good that he recognized that it wasnt as much of a strength thing as it was a technical flaw... thats exactly how you get better.
learned a lot from this part of the series. I do the same thing in grappling where I hook my leg around the top guy's leg to prevent the guard pass. This technique helped me understand my disadvantages and showed me how to make it work for me. Great stuff! Hope there's more to the series!
@verano29 Not at all. It had to do with Frank Mir having the most over-rated credentials in mma. He won a title by beating Tank Abbott and a lazy Tim Sylvia while all the good fighters were in PRIDE, became irrelevant and then got called in and hyped up when they needed someone to lose to lesnar.
Hes lost from his back half a dozen times, has no takedowns and has weak striking. Perfect opponent for a pure wrestler.
@Dillyoni69 Go watch his fights with Pdp, Vera or kickboxer Ian Freeman and tell me he has good grappling. Its easy to hit a standing, washed up target.
@verano29 Straight after the fight when Frank said he lost because of size and strength he had a lot of people saying that that was him in denial and that Lesnar was just more technically proficient in the fight.
Now he's saying he was wrong about the size and strength and he realises that lesnar was more skilled grappler and you say he's in denial?
its funny. mir comments onhimself. about trapping himself, and that being the reason brock did his work in that fight. thats basically the same thing i was thinking. not bad for a non jiu jitsu practitioner
Quite frankly i dont give a damn about SD HQ HD!! As long as Frank Mir is in it i'm happy!! :D Do you guys have this on dvd or stuff?? It is very usefull!!
I used to not be big fan of you guys cause I thought Ari was unqualified, excessive focus on the rubber guard and a lack of core fundamentals. But hey, you guys are consistently stepping it up bring in big names, teaching good solid fundimentals I'm extremely impressed. I'm also glad to see Ari competing.
@theredkid15 The goal is always to get better and seek out people better than yourself. I am glad I went down the road I did. 10th Planet is only one part of a whole. We always wanted Sub 101 to feature the top in the grappling world...cheers! Ari
@theredkid15 I think the focus on the rubber guard is awesome, im still a white belt (dont judge, i havent met a blue belt or even a purple belt that is my weight and able to submit me.) I have a very slick rubber guard that people really hate getting into....Not sure why people are hating on rubber guard..its a very effective position if you practice it like i do.
@2bowlsloaded420 The rubber guard isn't a bad guard. The issue with it is that it has a very limited application. The rubber guard requires your oppenent to place their hand on the mat which, at an mid to upper level of Jiu-Jitsu, is extremely hard to do. It's a decent tool to have in a wide array of guards. For example Butterfly guard is my favorite right now but I certainly wouldn't endorse a system that almost exclusively endorses it. It just requires a very specific application.

The leg would be very easy to remove from being caught underneath at 6:30 using very basic Gracie Jiu Jitsu you can get back to full guard and go to the punch block series or work from there
You can't write this guy off. He is so amazing as a learner that his defeat to Lesnar is going to radically mature him more than we realise. Instead of making excuses, he has carefully researched his own shortcomings. This has included his bjj history. I feel sorry for the next guy who fights him! I tell my kids at school a quote from Anatoly Karpov; "You learn more from one defeat than 100 victories". Well done Frank. You are an inspirational fighter and teacher.
@CTuxford What are you talking about? "Instead of making excuses, he has carefully researched his own shortcomings". Reality is that Brock, is bigger, stronger, and more athletic than Frank. Anything else is just a pathetic excuse. Frank will never fight Brock again. When he loses to Nog, his career in the heavyweight division is over (Dana said so himself). Frank was absolutely man handled by both Brock and Shane...and fans don't want to watch that crap.
@verano29 If you paid attention to the video, and understand a fraction of what Frank was saying, rather than just seeing him as "Frank Mir" and writing him off, you'd know what an absolute tool you come off as. Shut you mouth, and open your mind.
As a big guy any tips I can get on how to make it easier for me to move my hips on the bottom are a huge help. I also find myself in half guard alot. Great video.
@TheAdrenalineEffect You are correct. The gym space we were at was large so it had an echo effect. We will eventually get a HD camera and make things better for you guys. We appreciate the feedback ;-)
@TheAdrenalineEffect Well I usually hold back from making judgements about peoples character unless I know them personally, and even then I rarely know enough to be accurate. So I'll just take your word for it. :)
Frank Mir is very articulate and intelligent when it comes to him teaching. He seems like a great guy to learn from. Although what he is teaching now, I would love for him to not forget it when he fights Brock again.
I'm glad you used Brock as a lesson. My students were asking me why you didn't open the legs to get away, and I didn't have an answer for them at that point.
Most of my JJ has not been points-oriented, so that's a unique challenge/filter to have. I wonder, would it also be an advantage to see very minor things as "points", and upgrades? It might make you more aware of the minute details...
I must admit, I'm not a big fan of Frank Mir. I might even go so far as to say I don't really like him. But I've watched every one of these videos and I plan to watch every one that comes out afterward, and he definately seems like a nice guy and a great teacher.
@iloveasiangirls i know what you mean, I've not always been a big frank mir fan but I think you have to remember that part of franks job is creating hype for a fight and sometimes that involves saying things and acting in a way that won't make people like you for.villians put in the crowds as much as the hero's and you can't deny frank has great bjj, and like you say he does seem loke a nice guy and great teacher. i think a lot of it is showmanship
@itsmelindsayS Well, I guess that was a pretty stupid thing to say. I don't even know him. He just rubs me the wrong way sometimes, but he's a very intelligent fighter and I should give him more credit as a person. I'm ashamed of my quick judgement of him, and admit my folly in doing so before even getting to know him.
He's been my favourite fighter since i got into MMA a few years back, and he seems so genuinely nice and intelligent as well, thanks for this again submissions 101
