June 17, 2002 : While fighting a fire in northern California, the starboard wing of a C-130A Hercules, N130HP, former USAF 56-0538, c/n 3146, operated by Hawkins & Powers Aviation, came off as the centre wing box failed during a pull-out from a drop near Walker, California, followed less than a second later by the port wing. It rolled inverted and crashed into the forest, killing all three crew.

I don't think he started to unload. I think he tried to follow the contour of the land down the slope to get to the target area at low level and tried to bring the nose up too quickly over stressing the wing spar.

I believe the aircraft was broken from the mass release of water. The wing spar flexed too much and the drop in load made it flex. It flexed so much that it broke and this tragedy occurred.

..It happens because of poor maintenance and inspections. The older these airplanes become.....the more likely they are to develop metal fatigue, cracks etc. etc. The C-130 is a military transport...when they get to many hours on the airframe they get rid of them.
