  • I tried this and it worked great! The only problem I have now is with fraying from the part that was cut off and also the hem flipping back up. Even after Ironing the hem flips back up. Any suggestions for this issue? Thanks! :)

  • Great tip. I personally don't like dealing with needles and folds, so I use SkillClipz.

  • Just tried it! It was sooo easy. Thank you so much!

  • This is a great video, thank you so much. I am a little nervous to try this as I do not have a sewing machine so I will have to do it by hand, but hopefully it will work! Great tip, thank you for sharing!

  • yu lucky fucks (shorties) ... now teach me how to make jeans longer.

  • Been hemming jeans for over thirty years never thought to do this You are a very clever girl. Thanks

  • @mjmurdy wow!! Thank you! Honestly, someone taught me how to do this a long time ago :)

  • I have done this and it is really a time saver. I always have to hem my pants.

  • salinabear? is that you?

  • @shibakude01 no...sorry

  • I am about to try it right now!

  • @KimAnneRay how did it go?

  • @pathu32 and others,

If you do a zig-zag stitch above the straight stitch, it will help with fraying.

  • @primedlt thank you! :)

  • I REALLY need a sewing machine....

  • WOW!! I can't believe this! Did you come up with this on your own? Or did someone show you? I just watched this (well about a hour and a half ago) and had to immediately try it on a pair of my jeans. It worked great! I had to hand sew it because I don't have a sewing machine, and they were a pair of flare legged jeans, which made it pretty difficult, but I like the way they look! I'm thinking about taking some hem tape and using it on the flap inside because I can't get it to stay put.

  • @47Kali My aunt showed me how to do this a while ago she is also vertically challenged like me! LOL do you know anyone who owns a sewing machine? It's SO much faster with a sewing machine, let me know how the hem tape works, I'm always eager to learn different techniques :)

  • I can't wait to try this! I'm short too. It's so hard to find jeans in my length. Thank you!!!

  • @Debattrino :) Let me know how it went :)

  • Wow - you need to start making videos again babe!

  • @ABCDHousewife This is the first one i made a million years ago LOL I will someday... :)

  • thank you for the video!! I tried your method and it really helped :)

  • @faeriemagic16 Thank you for giving it a try! :) Glad to know it worked for you :)

  • to solve the fraying problem, just serge or zig zag the cut edges. : ) Then you can fold the seam down and stitch on top of the original hem stitching (or just beside it) with a thread to match the denim so it won't show. Then you shouldn't have to iron the hem every time you wash them. : ) Thanks for the great tut!

  • @Klozhaus thanks for the tip! I will try it next time :)

  • Are you gonna post a video of you actually doing it?... I know everyone is saying it is easy but I have never sewed anything in my life and would love to see it in action. Thanks.

  • @FreeLetto i really want to make another video but jut haven't had any time...i have my sewing maching out right now, i will try to make the video this weekend :)

  • @pathu32 - I did it without the video and it worked. I am 5'2" and wear mens pants so it was really hard for me. Thanks again!

  • @FreeLetto good for you! you've never sewn in your life and you did IT!! :)

  • brilliant! ty for sharing :)

  • @dbca33 Thank you for watching! :)

  • much thanks. so easy to do even with no sewing skills and needle and thread.

  • Genius! Thanks for the tip. I just hemmed 3 pairs of jeans.

  • @jduncan100 YAY! :)

  • Just hemmed my jeans and it was pretty easy ( the last time I used a sewing machine was in middle school so it took me a little to get back into it.) Thanks for the tutorial!!

  • @marissa222 you are welcome...i just hemmed a pair of Paper Denim Cloth jeans about 15 minutes ago! lol

  • I tried this on my old seven jeans and then got brave and did it on my new Rock and Republic. They look great. I also put some "fray guard" on them after cutting off the excess hem. I also used "invisible thread" that looks like fishing line so if I messed up you couldn't see the thread.

  • @sweetniko1 yay!! After practicing on my old jeans I finally tried this technique on my new True Religion jeans I had to take a breather at first...but then realized that there's no cutting so if I did mess up I could just rip the stitch out and start over! LOL Thanks for the feedback! :)

  • @Dogsbodycomedy why thank you! :)

  • I told myself that if this worked I would def leave a comment and I cant even explain how happy I am that this method worked!!! Its sooo incredibly hard to find jeans at my length and I almost shed tears when this worked... thank you soooo much for sharing!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @denmenace73 AWWW Thank you!! You are so welcome! I am so glad it worked for you...it's always good to have happy tears!! Hopefully hemming jeans this way will make your life a little easier! :)

  • I used this method for my teenage daughter's jeans - excellent. I wish I had seen this years ago - her jeans would have looked a lot neater:-)

  • @thinkinwoman you are welcome! It's better late than never huh? I have found so many designer jeans at T.J Maxx that were too long for me but it's not a problem anymore as long as they fit...lol :)

  • They look good. I'm poor so I'm going to DIY also.

  • @sweetniko1 let me know how they turn out :)

  • Great Job on the video and great information. I'm going to do my Jeans tonight

  • @taormina1957 thank you!...let me know how they turn out :)

  • Thank you so very much! Your video was super helpful and easy!

  • @lrnsvw21 :)

  • I hemmed my first pair of jeans today. It was SO easy, Thank you again.

    Shug

  • Awesome, I am 62 yrs young and just learning to sew, this is so helpful.

    Thank you, thank you

  • @shug1948 AWESOME!! You are very welcome! <3

  • What kind of sewing machine do you use? Does it have to be a special kind?

  • @unmeeh no, no special sewing machine needed...just use whatever you have :)

  • This is an EXCELLENT method. Thank you, thank you thank you!!!

  • @powerinthepictures you are welcome! :)

  • do you if they make jeans in size 36/28.I know they make 36/30 but there too long.if yes were can i find them? thank you

  • @MR4YOU i'm not sure...i will keep an eye out for 36/28's the next time i'm in a store :) sorry I couldn't help.

  • Hi Pathu32, I featured your video on my blog and shouted you out. Thank you for the information!

  • @BluesyNista you did?? Wow, thank you, that is so sweet of you! :)

  • this is known as the poor persons hem, and also these hems never last long

  • @stfuBUDDY really? I have jeans over 5 years old and the hem is still just as strong. Why is this the "poor person's hem"? The hem lasts as long as you have your jeans...

  • @pathu32 because poor people buy their kids big jeans and hem it like this and then as they grow they adjust the hem accordingly... to not buy jeans as they grow...

  • @stfuBUDDY I think that would be a great idea, esp. in this economy, so many people have lost their jobs. I didn't make this video with that in mind though, i'm just a short person who doesn't like waiting on seamstresses to hem my pants. :) great idea though! :)

  • Thank you sooooo much!! I hemmed my first pair today and they look terrific! I can't thank you enough for sharing this wonderful way to hem jeans! You are awesome! You explained the technique very well. I could understand it and I'm no seamstress!

  • @beeswaxchatter2 you are very welcome hun! and Thank you for the wonderful comment! :)

  • Thank you sooooo much!! I hemmed my first pair today and they look terrific! I can't thank you enough for sharing this wonderful way to hem jeans! You are awesome!

  • Can you do this with other pants and not just jeans?

  • @kimsj9028 i haven't tried it with other pants...but you can give it a go on a pair of old pants. Let me know if it works out :)

  • thank you for showing different types of jeans and not just one type. ^^ it really helps.

  • Thank you. Very easy to understand.

  • Awesome Technique! Thank you for sharing...Never thought of doing it your way....

  • here is something easy at wallmart there are heming trips that u can get and u heat the trips up and stick it on your pants and it is like super glue 4 pants :D

  • I bought a new pair of jeans and i was wondering how to alter it by myself i browsed though several videos on youtube looking for the easiest way of altering and i found yours...its awesome....urs is the best video for hemming jeans...thanx for sharing it with us...

  • @shinypath You are welcome! :)

  • Thanks so much. I hemmed my jeans under 30 minutes. This tutorial worked, plain and simple. You saved me money and time. The taylor near my house takes a week. Thanks for giving me the confidence to do this.

  • @BachMusic1 Aww you are welcome! You won't be needing the alteration person anymore...well at least not for hemming jeans! :)

  • Wow your video was the most helpful. You just saved me about $40. Now that I know how to do this I dont need to take my jeans into the cleaners to get hemmed.

    Thanks again!

  • @Emerald115 Comments on this video really make my day! :) You are very welcome! ;)

  • You are a genius! I have had my sewing machine for close to 2 years and NEVER sewed a thing because I don't really know how, but after watching your video, I got so inspired that I dug out a pair of too-long jeans that I thought were a lost cause and tried it. And you know what? They came out great! I am going to wear them tomorrow! Now I am going to try and work on my neices jeans. Thank you soo much!!!

  • @clairegloss Awww thank you! I am SO glad this method worked for you!! You'll have friends lining up once they find out...I had so many friends asking me to hem their jeans I started charging $5.00 per hem job :) LOL and you are so welcome hun! :)

  • I'm going to try this later tonight. The comments all seem to love it so I'll give it a go.

I need all the luck you can send. I am afraid of my sewing machine

  • @Ladybugz1975 Good luck hun! I've had battles with my sewing machine since i'm still a newbie and don't know how to use it completely. Just remember, if the needle gets stuk DON'T push on the peddle thingy, i've broke needles before because I kept pushing and pushing both times the broken needles missed my eyeball by just a little...

  • Very helpful! I'm somewhere between average and petite, so I end up either walking on my jeans (apparently, average women are basketball players) or look like I'm going wading. I'm about to try this on my most recent pair of jeans with the hope I won't have to keep wearing high heeled boots with them. Wish me luck!

  • @Bren942 Thank you! I know what you mean, I hate ruining a good pair of jeans because they drag on the ground and get all shredded and filthy...GOOD LUCK! I don't know why jeans are so long anymore, if you look around most teens/women aren't tall. Hope this works for you! :)

  • Thank you pathu32. I will look forward to that.

  • Wow, thank you so much. Recently, I bought a new pair of $200 jeans that were waaaay too long. I have had very bad experiences with getting my jeans hemmed by seamstresses before. I lost some nice fitting pants because of that.

This was very easy and quick to do and it looks great.

  • I tried it!!!!! And I love it! Thanks so much. Some ediot guy posted ur demo trying to make his look neater on the inside, but I'd rather pay someone to do it his way. Your way is simple and fast. I actually did it by hand cuz I don't know how to thread a sewing machine which is still ok. Can u do a demo on threading a sewing machine cuz I want to buy one now. All others I viewed don't make sense. You make easy to follow demos. Thanks!

  • @myiphonerocks3gS Awww thank for your sweet comment! I am so glad you like this way of hemming. I will do a "how to thread a sewing machine" video soon. Keep and eye out. :) Happy hemming!

  • clever! thanks

  • @EadNomad you are welcome! :)

  • awesome skill, how much would you charge for this service???

  • @danielwcas Well, thank you! I don't charge anything...I have hemmed my friends' jeans....but good idea, maybe i should start charging people :)

  • Awesome !!! Thanks my son needs about 4 jeans hemmed and I had no clue how to do it.

  • Geat Video, definitely the best idea for hemming pants.

  • @adkelly THANK YOU! :) <3

  • @Breanna13095 you're very welcome...and thanx :)

  • Thank you so much!!!! I got jeans online for a really good price, but when I got them, they didn't fit! So I was about to get rid of them before I saw this! You just saved me 2 pairs of jeans! Thank you!!!

  • @mandrz101 That's great! I'm so glad to hear that! Made my day :)

  • OMG I did it, now my jeans look freakin awesome! Thanks so much!

  • @Littleotau GREAT!!!! :)

  • I've been sewing for 38 years and have never seen this method to hem jeans...you are brilliant! The only question I have is what do you do if the width is extremely different, for example on a bell bottom that needs a 4" hem? Also, I'd like to give you a tip that you may already know: lay bulky seams on a hard surface and hit with hammer a few times to break denim down...easier to sew over. Also you MUST use Jeans needles, size 14 or 16 in your machine. Happy sewing!

  • @iluv2sewww Thank you for your comment!! :) I haven't tried bell bottoms so I couldn't tell you how that would work...i'm an amateur (at best) when it comes to sewing. THANK YOU for the great tip, I never thought about hitting the thick hem with a hammer so it's easier to sew! I also had no idea that there are different needles out there for sewing machines...thank you! You don't know how many needles i've broke...a few snapped off the sewing machine and missed my eye...that was scary

  • Sucks caused i bought pair of jeans from Korea. I went to the capital where all the night life and bought these skinny jeans. Im a dude and the length was long but then i got them hemmed professionally for like 5 bucks altogether. I wish America was cheap like that.

  • @aznboi1398 yes, it would be nice if things were cheaper here...my mom takes a lot of her stuff that needs altering to India (whenever she goes) it is so much cheaper to get complicated alterations done there as well :)

  • Super great demonstration. Thanks!!!

  • @vogeljenn aww thanx!! :)

  • I'm going to try it the longer way. It looks more professionally done (and I have time on my hands). Otherwise I would do it your way. I'll have to try it this way to see if it really works. Do I HAVE to get a sewing machine. I have no where to put it here. So maybe I should do it by hand?

  • @cutechong let me know how it goes...i've paid seamstresses over $20 (sometimes) just so that the hem looks like it came with the jeans but every time I could tell because they can't get the stitching and thread to match the jeans exactly. With this no one has yet been able to tell if my jeans have been hemmed :) you can def. hand sew the hem...just try it on an old pair of jeans first :)

  • @pathu32 Last year I had a bit of time between having no boyfriend and finding my new guy now. I actually hemmed up a pair of my, then, newer jeans, but now it's starting to unravel. MAYBE I should get a sewing machine, because it might last longer. What do you think? The jeans I hemmed up are my favorite pair of pants.

  • @cutechong yes, that does happen...if you can invest in a beginner sewing machine, that would be great...unless you have an aunt or grandma that has a sewing machine...you can always borrow their machine...i got mine really cheap at Walmart and it's a pretty good sewing machine :)

  • Incredible video! I'm new to sewing and have some long jeans. This is an excellent way to hem 'em and keep the original bottoms. Thank you for posting the video!

  • @antpop1 you are welcome! the most i can do it sew in a straight line! LOL so hemming is about as far as i'll go when it comes to sewing :)

  • those looked awesome!!!! i need to do this because im kinda short too lol. thanks for making this vid!!! :)

  • @mercedesyay you are welcome! :)

  • This is the way the Bucle Store does. But I don't like it they way they did it. Especially when I turn over to see the inside, I feel they destroyed my jeans.

  • @norahy3 REALLY? I didn't know :) did they cut the excess fabric off? I have learned that when I cut the excess it does look like a mess when I turn the hem over

  • at first i was like whatda, that looks terrible ~ then i saw ur final ironed product and i was like WOW... thanks for sharing. i'm gonna try it :)

  • @uscpharm07 Hehe, i'm glad you stayed tuned to see the final result! :) You're so welcome hun :o)

  • Thank you soooo much for doing this video!!! I can not believe how easy it was to hem my jeans! You did a great job explaining everything! Thanks again!!!

  • @jvanburen3868 Oh, how sweet! THANK YOU! I'm so glad I can share this method with everyeon!! :)

  • That's awesome! thanks!

  • looks messy. a disgrace

  • @megaera17 DON'T CARE!!!...it has worked for me...no one can tell my jeans are hemmed!

  • thank you so much I hand sewed it and turned out awesome

  • @babylala1234 Oh YAY! Glad to hear!!! :o)

  • that looks ugly.

  • @trunxs thank you!!!

  • This is great! I don't mind the fraying or ironing. I always feel like the extra fabric makes the bottom a bit "heavy." Awesome video though!

  • @OHemGEEitsBambi thanks hun!

  • Awesome and great direction :) I am short also and this really makes sense

  • @susietakunaqti oh thank you! I just wish I had my HD camera before I made this video :)

  • thank rocks. Im going to do all my jeans xx

  • @TheGlossyglitz hehe :)

  • Thanks for the technique. I'm going to use it on my pants. I'm a shorty as well.

  • @remyazzie :)

  • Thank you very much - you made it very easy to understand - just getting the sewing machine out and im gonna have a go!!

  • @donndoh good luck :) let me know how it turns out :)

  • @pathu32 - jeans turned out perfect - very proud of myself - thanks very much

  • @donndoh YAY! Thanks for letting me know! :)

  • hay

thanks again.. this time is from my sister.. when she saw my jeans she couldn't believe... so i went a head and use the same method for her jeans.. (she is very short :) she was amazed...

    so once again ..thanks

  • @Rooshanii Awesome!!! :)

  • I can't wait to try this technique. I'm 5'1", so sometimes even petite jeans are too long on me. The finished look is very nice, and you don't lose the original hem like when you take them in to a seamstress, not to mention saving $. Thanks!

  • @cbgallus you are very welcome!

  • You are a sweet angel. Thanks so much for this video. I just wish you could be rewarded for this helpfulness. Best wishes to you.

  • @SHEIKHAMISSUK Aww thank you!! :o)

  • Very helpful! They look great, Thank You!

  • @melissab58 Thank you! :)

  • Thanks i'm not sure which method to try yet but this looks pretty easy.

  • You did a wonderful job explaining how to shorten jeans. I would have never thought of keeping the original hem showing at the bottom. I have been sewing since before you were born. haha. So you can teach old dogs new tricks. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

  • @QuantumNova Aww thank you for your sweet comment! It made my day! :)

  • okay I'm very short and I've been wanting to try this on some jeans for a long long time. I just have a question. do you have to re-iron the jeans after every washing? I'm just wondering because i can predict the sewn on hem curling up on me after they get out of the washer/dryer. its not a big deal, just curious.

  • yes, I have to iron almost all of my hems...some of the thinner jeans caan be taken out of the dryer and folded while they are really hot...the hem seems to stay on those...you'll have to play around with jeans to see which ones can be worn right out of the dryer...but be prepared to iron most of them :)

  • THANK YOU! I just used this video tutorial to hem a pair of jeans that I've had for over a year. They were sooooooooo long, I had not even worn them yet.

For those that don't have a sewing machine, rest assured...this is an easy thing to do by hand. That's what I did.

Thanks so very much for this video!!!

  • You are so welcome hun! ;)

  • I tried this out on three jeans I had. Let's see, I broke 3 needles on my machine. Took me WHy to long to do this. But it was a great learning experiance. Mine didn't come out like yours. Maybe I had to much matterial to work with, 5 to 6 inches? I'll try cutting the extra off next time. But like they say, " pratice makes perfect". So now I'll just have to get more jeans to practice on.

  • oh! yes, watch out for the broken needles! I had that happen to me many times when hemming jeans...one almost missed my eye when it snapped off :( whenever I get a new pair of jeans I may do a video showing exactly how it's done...i mess up a lot too...some jeans are a complete pain in the @ss...it's the hardest when you get the the seams...

  • I can't wait to try this out. I always have to hem my pants and if this works then I won't be afraid to do it myself.. I tried it once but my jeans came out all wrong and I haven't wanted to try again.

But this gives me hope. So simple!

  • I hope it works for you...let me know how it went :)

  • the tailor just ruined my jeans by hemming them about an inch too short; they literally stop at my mid ankle right now. am i completely screwed? they cost 175$

  • omg!! Is the tailor going to give you $175? That would make me SO MAD! It's bad enough...when it takes us all to find the perfect pair of jeans...but then, when someone ruins them like that, it's just sad! :(

  • oh wow...I tried this and it was extremely easy! I also bought some no fray glue to put on the ends of the excess jeans from Hobby Lobby and everything seems to be working! Now I can go buy any style of jeans and not have to worry about the length! I'm 5ft 2inches btw! Thanks again so much. You're was the easiest way I've seen so far!

  • you are so welcome! I am glad it worked! I will have to use the no fray stuff on the jeans where i cut the excess...I'm 5'2" as well ;)

  • i would like to say thank youuuuuu very muchhhhh... u really helped meeee.. i did it n nobody noticed..

instead of chopping the jeans i just sew it with needle... n it workeddddd........

    thankssssss

  • by sewing i mean. i did the whip or blind stitch...

  • you're welcome!! :) yes, sewing it by hand is just as effective, it just takes longer... :)

  • Hey I am going to try this. This is a big help. I am short (yeah hear them all) and jeans are at least 90% of them are long.

  • YAY! Just remember, DON'T cut the excess or you're jeans will fray like crazy and they will flip outward everytime you wash them... :) good luck! let me know how they turn out

  • I have looked at several videos on You tube to see how to hem pants, and this is the EASIEST and best one I saw. Thanks!

  • Thank you!! :) Something tells me, you'll be using this method a lot :)

  • I am sooo glad I didn't try cutting and hemming my jeans before I saw this video! I am super short and buying jeans kills me....so I thought ok I am gonna hem them myself with my new sewing machine! I was thinking I had to cut them which scared me! Thank you sooooooooooooooo much!!!!!!!

  • You're welcome hun! I'm only 5'2 so I know how you feel :)

  • OMG! This is just a GREAT idea! I had this issue shopping for jeans ALL MY LIFE! I'm so impressed at how good the finish product looked!!!!

  • AWESOME!!! :)
