Just... men... machines... and awesome, simple, bucolic course... and other people who didn't have to pay a days wages to come and enjoy the action! As a young lad of 14 my parents took me to the ADAC 1000 km at the Nurburgring, bought a pit pass, and I met the greatest drivers in the world,Fangio ,Moss, all the rest, a guy named Colin Chapman who had brought his first race car to the Nurburgring, a little aircraft rivetted type aluminum body beauty. I asked him what it was and he said "this is the Lotus Climax". Another thrill for me , the Scottish flagged Ecurie Ecosse Jaguars ,on their way to sweeping the Le Mans race a short while later
The very notion of a running start is just insane, it's something Monty Python would have thought up, yet here it is! I think it was Ickx one year (deciding to show the farce of a running start) strolled to his car and proceeded to charge through the field to win.
my mom wasn't even born yet, at least your generation got good quality racing, all we get is super safe racing a housewife could do, and tracks with hills, FIA would not accept

Thanks for this video, I was "only" 2 years old when this race took place. On the other hand, I'm still an old timer compared to most of the YouTube crowd LOL!
There is a 56' Ford Thunderbird in the race, imagine driving that around the ring in race traffic!
