  • Awesome.  And what is that table made of? Looks like some beautiful slabs, but also looked like they put two together for all those voices. Hardwood, cedar? Probably also generations of lanolin. Did they weave the cloth together as well as waulk it? Thank you very much for the post!

  • Yes, two small tables put together - don't know what wood they are made of. It made a good solid surface anyway! This tweed was woven in the Borders, given to us by Redshank Kiltmaker in Inveraray. In the Hebrides they would have woven their own cloth, as most families had a loom; but here in Argyll they would have taken their homespun yarn to the local weaver. There was a weaver living in Auchindrain township in the nineteenth century.

  • The instrument is the work - I find this deeply meditative.

  • What it is they are doing? Does this soften the fabric?

  • @nguttillo yeah, its called waulking the fabric. it stretches it lol

  • @holamesomigos Doesn't stretch the cloth - shrinks and softens it.
