My iMac make the same noise. It is very annoying. It did not make this noise for the first six months. I took it in to the store and they said they could not hear anything. The store is very loud, of course they can't hear anything. They called me a week later and told me they got a replacement fan in for the mac. They changed the fan and it still makes the same noise. I will have to take it in again
Tomorrow my iMac 20" Early 2009 is going back to repair for the 3th time, exact same problem as uploader has. My iMac still has warranty, but I don't understand why it's so difficult to replace a fan.
-unplug the power cord and anything else plugged in
-hold down the power button for ten seconds
-plug everything back in
-hold down cmd, alt, P and R and turn on your system still holding the keys down until it makes the start up noise for the SECOND time then release
worked perfectly for me. it basically resets the power levels on everything including the fans and the problem was that one fan was receiving too much power.
I had the same problem, and the answer to it was really simple. The desk that I had my mac placed on wasn't completely flat, it had a slight bow in it due to a heavy emac being on it for 4 years. I brought my imac up to the kitchen table and the noise disappeared, I brought it back to my computer desk and it started making noises again. I even placed it on other flat surfaces in the house...guess what...no noise!!! Strange but true!
Hi i have a similar issue on my 27 imac this ticking noise i sent it to apple to repair they said that its normal. but they replaced the fans it still makes a faint tick now and then
and it is the same with any brand a few from every batch have issues, its just apple has a smaller range of computers which means that you hear about it more
mine was doing the same thing until i took it apart and i found that there was a wire barely touching the fan so i fixed that and it wwas perfect again.
I bought my 24" intel iMac, mid Feb. and had the same exact noise coming from my CPU fan. I downloaded and installed smc FanControl and messed around with the fan(s) speeds hoping to overwork? the fan. Thought that might help. About 2 weeks into the ticking i started it up and the ticking was so dang loud i thought my mac was going to fly apart. Like a model airplane type of loud. After that, zip!? Quiet as whisper. Odd. So far so good.

Annoying noise isn't it, mine does this from time-to-time. I thought it may be clogged with dust. Does anyone know how to clean the fan?

probably the fan is hitting something inside the case, I think that rebooting the mac will not help, try to clean it an then retry.

(1) Update your software - Apple Menu (upper left hand icon on the main screen - second item on this menu "Software Update".
(2) Shut down the mac completely and wait 1 minute with EVERYTHING unplugged.
(3) Plug the accessories (e.g. keyboard, mouse, whatever) back into the Mac
(4) Plug in the Power Cord
(5) Turn the Mac back on
(6) If this works, please copy and paste this message back at the top of the comments for others.

You might have to go to a store that fixes macs and get them to clean your fan.

maybe you should bring it back or send it back to where you bought it and get it repaired or replaced

That noise could also be the hard disk, my friend's laptop also made a noise like that just before it's hard disk stopped working.
Lachlant1984 3 years ago
It sounds as if the blades of the fan are rubbing against the rim of the fan, not good, the fan may need to be replaced.
