Gotta remember the '70s context. Television became a babysitter, so socially conscious content programmers devised "good messages" to mix into the schedule.
Then Reagan came along and told Americans they were silly to feel guilty about making a buck just for the money's sake (a message they had been waiting to hear), and launched our current world of "bottom-line" justification, squeezing everything off the boobtube that doesn't draw maximum advertising revenue.
Except of course that's not the way it worked out. Nowadays you can get whatever kind of content you want -- educational, goofy, whatever -- any time of day you want it. And it was the free market and the bottom line that brought us that. At the end of the day, commitment to economic liberty yields huge social benefits for us all. So called liberals always warn us about the terrible consequences of liberty, but then the opposite always happens.
Yawn. The ketchup thing. Thirty years later and that's still about the strongest argument you guys have against Reagan.
BTW, I looked at the Schoolhouse Rock wiki entry. Did you know they were first produced during the Nixon admin? And did you know they were created by the private networks and sponsored by General Foods, a giant evil corporation? And did you know that new episodes were created during the mean ol' Reagan years? Obviously they were a conspiracy between Repubs and corpos.
@1Doz Hope you're having fun beating up on that straw man.
I've also perused the wiki entry (a couple of years ago, when I first started looking up these Schoolhouse Rock vids) ... I was surprised to learn that the PSAs were a voluntary decision of the networks, rather than an FCC mandate.
That's why my initial post talked about content programmers' decisions, instead of goverment requirements.
Goes to show what happens when hippies get their hands on something.
Okay, now go a step further and admit that you were *disappointed* when you realized they were an creation of the market rather than of the government, since that poses a challenge to your worldview which takes a dim view of human behavior unguided by the enlightened central authorities.
Economic liberty (really all liberty) is good precisely because is gives people -- hippies included -- the opportunity to innovate in ways that benefit us all.
@1Doz Thanks for saving me the energy of concocting a well-thought-out response by sending this one ... the fact that you are CERTAIN that I am "disappointed" in individual initiative indicates more strongly than ever that you are arguing with someone who isn't in the room. I won't continue a conversation with a person who runs from the middle ground.
And it is amusing how you take the standard leftist shots at Reagan but now run for cover under the notion that you're some kind of centrist. You people are ridiculous.
@1Doz I bet there's nothing you disagree with, factually, in my initial post. You only disagree with my tone ... that the Reagan Revolution was more negative than positive. I admit, the ketchup thing was weak ... I was on a time limit, and I should have just held off on a response until I could write something more thorough.
I was commenting on how "social responsibility" has diminished as a motivation since the '70s ... otherwise, A&E and TLC would still have initials-appropriate programming.
You would have preferred that the Carter malaise continued on for another generation?
The left's compulsive hatred of Reagan is just an expression of its contempt for the idea that people are capable of virtue apart from government intervention. That attitude sickens me and yes I do disagree with it.
There's A&E, there's TLC, theres video, there's YouTube where kids can watch 100 PSAs in a row if they want to. Why whine about programming when the choices are basically unlimited?
This isn't from Schoolhouse Rock, but it appears to be done by the same production house, and it features the same singer, Jack Sheldon. I'm sure that's where the confusion came in.
You know what's brilliant about this one? Listen to the music...although the phrase "beans and rice" is repeated a bunch of times, there isn't a single *musical* phrase that's repeated in the entire song. Although it sounds like a funky '70s pop song, musically it has more in common with modern classical music. Deep! You young kids nowadays are so deprived.
why did those kids eating beans and rice have to look like a pair of stereotypical bean and rice eaters? they look like indians, and by a stretch mexican.damn psa racists. actually im jkin. these psas are a fundamental part of my childhood they are precious to me. SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK FTW!!!
Hey I remember watching that with Saturday morning cartoons in the 70's. I never really understood why they would show it unless it had something to do with the really bad economy and recession in the 70's.
I don't remember this one, but it's so cool. They were telling us that beans and rice gave us all the protein we needed. It was very subvsersive for that time.
black folks eat beans and rice, too! at least we did back when I was a kid before McDonald's became a food group. We still have beans and rice in my house and if you wanna get reaaalllyyy country there's always rice and gravy.

no one ever believe me that this was a real song, I remember as a kid when we had beans and rice I would always put out one bean and one piece of rice and just leave them there LOL
I had them again recently. I used brown rice instead of the white rice featured in the PSA because nutritionists and other people from the health/wellness fields are putting a STRONGER emphasis on whole grains in our diets nowadays.
This totally baffled me as a kid. I'm still not sure what the point was. I mean, it's not like kids get to choose what they have for dinner. Was the intent to make poor kids feel good about their boring diet? I must be missing something here.
I dedicate this song to all of Southern California demographics LOL!!!!

Beans and Rice IS NICE ???
This is from School House Rock??
All of a sudden gramar is not impotant
UNLESS!! Unless, this is some minority issue where the beans represent the Latino population and the rice, other 3rd world countries
Then the grammatical error is in context
HUTINAK 2 years ago
OR "Beans and Rice" is the title of the dish and therefore singular.
Also, it's not cool to attempt grammatical correction and misspell "grammar" in the same post.
