  • Nils, a wonderful guitarist !!!!!!!!

  • It does not get any better than this, does it?I would like to be able to paint the

way he plays,or even write meaningful pieces about the state of the world!

  • Nice tune.. Like it a lot.. Makes me think of my long lost friend.. who lives far away. :(

Love it anyway!! *both thumbs up!!* <3 <3 <3

  • The virtousity and the humility-some say Nils is under-rated.Don't think so,he is very contented with having built Neil Young's music, and with being a central

figure in the E Street Band.A musicians musician!Choose between Nils and Carlos is hard. They are equals in the firmament, and will go to heaven together,I hope.

  • @claesgoer Yes, Bruce is lucky to have him on...

  • Dies ist wirklich gut. Höre Nils schon über Jahre immer wieder gerne. Gehört für mich zu den Großen!

  • He is the greatest of all-he plays a guitar like no-one else-sometimes hard and sometimes so soft.He made Grin,he made Crazy Horse with NY,and he gave the Boss the great sound.Nils-every one should slänga sig i väggen, som vi säger i Sverige!

  • @claesgoer What does slänga sig i väggen,som vi säger i Sverige!

    Mean? It looks Fantastic.

  • Yes, I lived in Nashville when he was playing there, 1991 played downtown across the Cumberland River in a hole in a wall & was packed out! I fell in love with him then! You know Music City USA is sometimes about 'who you know' & a bunch of politics. He is an amazing artist and so talented,...gotta luv him!

  • Old,but the best! What can Santana do,rather they should play together!

    C

  • Dislikin is like pissin on a Van Gogh...

  • Plus... his TONE is the best

  • I have a friend who can play like this, but he don't like to sing. I'm very greatful to him and the other astonishing guy who have put their musical talents together to put music to my writings.

  • Pure genius in feedback playing and soul!

  • We love this song! Such a good representation of great guitar work. Nils rules..From: A couple who had to download this song on their honeymoon!

  • Love This...~

  • Thanks LordBlackMass!!!

I lost a few Grin albums through the years....like the one where he's hanging upside down in a tree! I loved that album.....the cover was great too. Now I know where I can maybe get a copy. I was a super-fan of Grin in the 70's.

  • How can u not like this?????

  • If you want to buy copys of the old Grin stuff on CD or even old school Vinyl Bob Berberich the singer/drummer for Grin runs a record store in Baltimore MD called Trax on Wax. He will even sign copys if asked..a super nice guy and a real lost legend of rock n roll

  • thanks for uploading this video. A great song, such a feeling

  • what can you say !! Love his sound. Is there a newer version of this anywhere?

  • right on Mitchkaboola,../ craig5904,..i been a fan of Nils since about 1970,.i'm 58 and old school, the guy has tek,. and he's a soulful player, better yet, he's a guitar player with SOUL!( in my humble opinion.)

  • 2 u Miss. Moe.. <3

  • ...still love will pass the test of time

  • woow that's so beautifull

  • wooow that's so beautifull(A)

  • Nils' harmonics are off the f'n chain!

  • What @michikaboola says. I told Nils I loved him...after his performance in NYC @House of Blues.

  • This is one of the truly great guitar solos. Never really gets a mention.

  • Nils, You can rock a song like no other....

  • you can see who Knopfler was copying clearly here

  • @MickeyLove01 I think "copying" is kind of harsh. I'd rather say were inspired by, because there is still huge difference between the two of them. Knopfler is way smoother and their picking-styles are of different worlds

  • @moldy08 Yeah right.

  • nils lofgren ist einfach mal der hammer

nils is a verry good musikmaker

  • I saw this show in 1991 in Cologne... Nils blew me away!!! He is such a fantastic and emotional guitar-player and musician and a very nice guy too!

This concert is one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life and that were a lot.

You can get this on the Rockpalast DVD!

  • This song was written as a valentine gift from nils....we were in London and Tim Foster and I took it to town and got it on the radio...it sold out the show in minutes...valentine has a lot of magic to it..I am no longer married to nils..he has another wife amy.....she is his valentine now..but the song still belongs to me....thanks for having it to hear ...xoxox

  • @CisRundle ; Cis ..are you the blonde on Secrets in the street on the british tv show Saturday Live ? ( 1985/6) its on here somewhere

  • NILS IS SOMEONE I HAVE FOLLOWED SINCE HIS GRIN DAYS PRE BRUCE AND THIS WAS WRITTEN WHEN HE WAS SOLO.... BUT BESIDES THE POINT.... HE IS AN AMERICAN TREASURE..... AND DOES NOT GET NEARLY AN OUNCE OF RECOGNITION.... I KNOW HE IS HAPPY TO PLAY AT THE BOSS'S SIDE AND THAT IS LOYALTY BUT HE IS A GREAT MAN AND MUSICIAN..CHARLIE M

  • there are so many more that play better and with more soul as you put it, wake up!!!

  • @4FrakkinReal Many my have better technique but few play with the heart and feel of Nils!!!!!!!

  • @4FrakkinReal he he sure, your comment tells more about ur ability to listen than Nils Lofgrens skills......

  • Incredible song...no one could do it like Nils...the recording of this song with Springstein doing back up vocals is superb....

  • Incredible song...no one could do it like Nils...the recording of this song with Springstein doing back up vocals is superb....

  • superb, theres no one better.

  • He's a great guitarist without any doubt.

  • A guitar God ... simple.

  • I love how Nils still refers to himself as "The New Guy" when it comes to his E Street Legend, and he's been in the band almost 25 years!

  • Can anyone find that song by Nils Lofgren called "Code of the road"?

  • seen springsteen, u2,bowie, weller ,pink floyd, and 100, others, nils in the coal exchange in cardiff, was a dream come true,,, love u man,,,,

  • Nils has his own unique tone

    and timber

    and

    from the first note

    you know it's him

  • best song ever!

  • Great song - thx for this vid.. ;-)

  • Can you please upload Back it up from this show?

  • Nils is one of the true musical wonders of this world.

  • nils is exceptional, he is a genius, wonderful guitare work. is my fav song of all time - long may you live and produce - no mercy is another work of pure genius. cheers

  • This is one of my favorites

  • This is one of my favorite songs.

  • I was at this gig. Seems like a long time ago.

  • @travelawyer, I was there, too. And it certainly seems ages ago. I do remember it was goddamn LOUD!! Electric Nils always carves in your eardrums! Katrina & the Waves were the openers, right?

  • @biggerfish66 Ich erinnere mich nicht mehr, das kann sein. Ist schon zu lange her. :-)

  • @travelawyer. Hab´s gerade im Internet überprüft. Stimmt tatsächlich. War ja nicht Nils einziger Auftritt in der Live Music Hall.

  • THANKS FOR PUTTING THIS OUT TO THE WORLD. GREAT PROFESSIONAL GUITARIST/VOCALIST THE BAND ARE GREAT TOO. NILS FOR KING. HE WRITES SOME BRILLIANT SONGS.

  • Has never been among my favourite songs of his, but o.m.g. what a wonderful intro and what a beautiful solo. Nils is one of those very very very rare guitarists whose playing can make you weep with joy!!

  • His guitar produces a rainbow of melodic sounds

  • He is a God on the guitar!

  • altdalt--I have also known Nils since his days in Montgomery County, Maryland and I was astounded by his talent when he was just 17! But more importantly, he was then and is now a decent human being--despite his god-like abilities on guitar, friendly and easy to talk to. A true guitar hero in many ways.

  • first saw him at Glasgow in 1978..........the best

  • Been listening to Nils since the days of Grin while attending Walter Johnson High in Bethesda, Md and he never fails to impress. Was thrilled when he joined the E Street band. One of the truly great guitarists of our generation.

  • The first time I hear and see Nils Lofgren performing. (except for Ringo Starr all star band DVD)

I think I never heard a guitar being played in this way!!! I really, really like this song, and Lofgren's singing, and this performance and... Wow.

  • He is such a great performer live. When you see him it is like watching a ballet in motion. I took 10 people from my office who had never heard of him. They were all from different countries and music likes. Each of them sat in awe entranced by his stage presence and musical magic.

  • Thanks for posting this wunderfull video.

    *****

  • Nils kills.....this is a sublime performance... he came to dance.

  • @nils 'love or else' brau; love or else.

  • I wish more people would say as you guys do. I´ve been listening to Nils since second grade, Im no in nineth grade, and I´ve NEVER EVER, and I tell you, NEVER EVER, met anyone except for me, my dad and mom said they even know who nils is.... poor swedish people, they don´t know what real music is. rap and RnB is the only thing you hear, maybe a little metallica somewhere, but never like music like this. thats sad! but it doesn´t keep me away from listening to it;) god bless Nils!

  • for thirty years i been a music fan, this song made the hairs on my neck stand up,what a song,sensational1this guy is legend

  • Clapton, nils, knop, my faves guitarists in no particoular order

  • What does he use to get that great distorted tone? Is that from the amp or is he using a pedal?

  • This is so good. The guitar playing is fantastic. Nils is so easy and relaxed in his approach. A true master at work. Thanks very much for posting.

  • Whenever I'm alone on Valentine's Day, I dig out this old mp3 and imagine better days to come.

  • i wish more people would understand the thing in Nils guitarplaying. or maybe I´m just stupid, but to me he´s the best. my hero, no doubt!

  • Beautiful...great guitar and poignant lyrics...Thanks for posting

  • Wow awesome guitar and wow wow what a voice!

  • such quality

  • This is so beautiful. I sing and to hear a voice like his...smooth, effortless, beautiful...

  • makes playing look easy !!! Truly brilliant guitarist !

  • nils is truley awesome, and a very touching video, brings me back

  • A classical emotive piece of music, He plays with true feeling.

  • My daughter (Hi, Alex!), knowing how much I rated Nils, took me to his 9/6/98 gig in Burnley. He signed ('Believe') a poster for me and made a really warm connection with us. A top performer and human being.

  • Simply amazing. A true guitar hero.

    - Colin

  • this is very nice. unfortunately nils hasn't had any superstar great hits like bruce or neil or many of the others mentioned.

fortunately he's a fine musician who was at the right place, right time, and i love his taste and way. he's a good teacher too

  • No Mercy?

  • Very Allman Brothers-like in the begining.

I hear Nils many time around the Balto-Wash area. As good as Clapton, Page, Harrison, or Beck. Underrated? Undiscovered!!

  • Never ever underated. He is considered one of the very best in the world and has been since his debut at 17 years of age. Perhaps it would be more accurate that, because his music spans various generations now, a new generation is discovering him and believe that they are the first to do so. But no...Nils is an icon, a giant and - as a fan for thirty years - one of the all time greats.

  • @mitchikaboola I first heard them at a place in Baltimore MD, The Black Jack 21 & Under, in the late 60's. It was a night club for those not old enough to drink.

  • @mitchikaboola yes sir!

  • @mitchikaboola so true. when i went to his shows in the early 70s, 2000-seat shows, they were always packed. way before he was with springsteen. used to see him at the crossroads lounge in maryland in the late 60s checking out unknown guitarist roy buchanan.

  • Fuck yeah, this is what I'm talking about! Awesome!! xoxo

  • I think Nils lofgren has his own different way of approaching his guitar sound but i prefer his acoustic sound, best he did was Black book's!

  • Others may have technical skill, but no one plays with the soul of Nils! This is transcendent. He should be in the R&R Hall of Fame as a solo artist on the basis of this one performance alone!

  • I can't decide if my favorite is David Gilmour or Nils in terms of playing with soul and feel. They're both awesome, but David's got more hits I suppose and his solos for Time and Comfortably Numb are timeless. This performance from Nils is astonishing though...

  • @craig5904 And just whom would those others be?

  • @BARRIEMOREBARLOW You are right. I can't think of anyone who can match Nils on guitar, acoustic or electric. I think we should all go on the Rolling Stone website's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists and protest. Nils isn't on the list--amazing. He should be number one, or at least in the top five!

  • @craig5904 Woodie Guthrie style no doubt !

  • @craig5904 No doubt., that's for sure (Woodie Guthrie/ Lead Belly style.)

  • Nils is beyond great. He is a living guitarGOD. This one is amazing.

Hes up there with SRV, Jeff Healey, Mark Knopfler in my book.

  • your forgetting Jeff Beck,Jimmy page!

  • The moment perfect

  • the feeling with which Nils plays with is amazing!!! The emotions that he makes you feel with both the guitar and his voice. Not too mention if you ever get to meet him, he is a fantastic bloke and loves to have a chat with his fans, very approachable!!!! Thanks Nils for the great music

  • Incredible!!! Nils rules!! One of the best guitarist in the world!!!

  • NILS IS NOT UNDERRATED !!! NILS IS NOT UNDER RATED. People who knows him rate him TOP very soon. Maybe he is known enoughm yeah... then spread the words : NILS LOFGREN is GREAT !!

S T O P saying the same things like you know him and you have good taste and you are better than the others.... NILS IS NOT UNDERRATED. Nils is GREAT.

  • Why is he so under-rated.? The guy can do it all.

  • GOD BLESSES THE FEW AND NILS IS A GIFT

  • I'm green in envy to those who have the luck to witness this performance with their own eyes. Man... this thing is amazing.

  • Yes, and a blessing to kno0w he started recording at the beginning of his career at a little sound studio owned by a couple of guys in No. VA. I am not sure but it was either in or near Fairfax, VA We all know he is exceptionally gifted, but I just want to say tht he music world at lastge has really looked past him. I mean, just look and listen. No hype, no ego, nglam, just Nils and his fabulous style.

  • Once you've seen him play live, you'll be convinced how good he is. He is a rare breed.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOAH I've never seen guitar like that. I'm in shock LMFAO this song is ace whee can I get this version on MP3 format?

  • Best live performance ever

    best intro ever...

I could praise this song forever

  • YOUR all crazy! Nils is the best guitarist to come along since JIMI--Just enjoy him! Pick up Cry Tough and his live acoustic CD's-you'll love him even more!

  • Dukabor thanks for responding,Your wright I was a 17 year old 2 stroke rd350 riding drinking gun powder and spitting nails kid,I listened to Zepp, kiss ,Floyd etc....you know the drill.I did not understand Nils music then He Is very gifited.

  • The first time I heard Nils was back In 1976 I bought his album the cover was awesome but when I heard his songs they were crappy.I was turned off to his music. That said Its now 33 years later that same friend I was with when I first bought his album gave me an old cassette he bought cheap my friend decide to give it to me as a gag gift, and oh my god nils Is a great soulful player

that has been missed why ????????

    called silver lining

  • that was probably "night after night"...a great album...first song was "take you to the movies"...the songs weren't crappy...at the time you probably were listening to a lot of other great music...me...and my band...loved Nils...

  • btw...some nights we used to open with "take you to the movies"....we didn't care if anyone knew what it was...hell if we felt like it we went into "Keith don't Go" right after if we felt like it....we weren't really popular during the disco era..heh

  • such an awesome intro, not to mention the song.

  • Does anyone know where to get this version in MP3 format??? I luv it!

  • Very underrated guitarist ,song writer and performer.

  • why?

  • absolutely agree...and to Adamboy8 too..no one can imitate him...he finger picks lead guitar...jesus just do a youtube search on "Keith don't Go"...where he gives a guitar lesson...try to keep up...lol....

  • just searched nils for no reason:P. where from?

  • Chicago

  • From high school on, the Maryland border (suburbs of Washington DC), studied piano, guitar, accordian, etc, played in Neil Young's Crazy Horse band, and has been a member of Springsteen's E St. Band since around 1983 -- see my Springsteen playlist for some amazing version of Because the Night where Bruce has Nils play lead- in 1985 it is, really quality. He also would do back flips with guitar in hand on stage. Still tours solo. Look in the Wikipedia for Nils Lofgren.

  • That is true 4rainbowed. I went to UM and he played at a club I worked at in CPark. He used to be a gymnast. He went to Walter Johnson High in Bethesda. This song still gives me chills!!

  • Formally he wasn't in crazy Horse. He palyed with Neil a lot, but not w/Crazy Horse. One of the many other musicians Neil has picked up here and there.

  • MAGIC Fingers! A true master of the strings.

  • Gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it. <3

I've heard him play this with Bruce too. Awesome

  • Really? Where? Did Nils play with a different band-- Like, did his band open for Bruce Springsteen and then Springsteen's band played (with Nils in it)? Where and when, was this?

  • I founded this song in july and I still listen to it at least twice a day :D

I can't thank you enough for posting this!

Propably the best love song ever made :')

  • Think the drummer is Johnny B Badanjek

  • Who's the drummer?

  • Marvellous

  • two words : GUITAR HERO!!!

  • Sweet!

  • A rock god!

  • This is truly a wonderful song I have the single, on which he and Bruce Springsteen perform this.

  • I love the way his guitar sounds

  • Nils rules!! I saw him with Springsteen in Helsinki and he was awesome.

He is propably one of the best guitarists of all time and I like his woice. His woice is unique. It's weird, but beautiful. His whole style is werry recognizable.

  • Beautiful guitar playing!

I'm a big fan of a uk guitar mag called 'Guitar Techniques' .... next month

i noticed there will be Piece on Nils style!

Great guitar player what feel!...going to enjoy some more songs now!

    alex

  • Nils is the best!

  • Awesome, superbe, única-genial!!!

  • He is gotvater on the guitar. I experienced nils on his sacred weapon 2006 tour in Cologne . It was a phantastic concert. Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young also regarding his abilities. Nils please come as soon as possible back to Cologne!!!

  • Nils i have seen jou in sittard netherlands back in the early 80 thies, and later on in brummen also the netherlans. Men you can stand on youre on as performer, lucky Bruce, keep friends and great music will follow

  • Nils rules, this might be his best song

  • This is a beautiful song and it makes me happy to know Euros appreciate him as well. He was big in Maryland when I was in college in late 70s, early 80s and some of his songs bring back such fond memories of a day gone by.
