  • Hey man. Why dont you do a cover of this. I like your voice.

  • The first Fingerstyle Song i learned. Easy to play and sounds pretty cool

  • thank you! a lot! R.E.M. is my favorite band. they split today and I'm devastated. but learning to play this song will make up for it a little.

  • Great lesson man!!

  • I think he dose Yoga so that's why he sit's on the floor everyone.

  • justin i want to thank you for all that you do with your lessons, you have a great gift for obvoisly not only playin but teaching idiots like me to belt out a tune. thanks dude. peace

  • Justin, send me a message, and I wil buy you a chair

  • Can someone answer this,,when hes picking the Em,,he hits the 6th string then down to the 3rd yes,,but if this is it are the two strings used for Em not being touched at all,so why have the Em cord in there, why not just open strings??

  • Thats called SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT in Asia

  • What I don't understand is when you're playing the e minor, you're still only plucking all the open strings....so is the e minor really necessary? if someone could explain that part, I would really appreciate it! :) :)

  • how much do u sell this guitar?

  • when your plucking the e minor chord... your skipping the fingers that are on the frets anyway... sorta defeats the purpose of making the e minor shape with your nonplucking hand. correct me if im wrong please :) im just a beginner

  • @ronnies30 yeah that's right but better to have fingers on the guitar than not!

  • Another great EASY lesson! THANK YOU

  • can i have one of your guitars justin? you have one to many

  • Justin you'r the man, we had this in our school as a test. And i just coulden't get through the whole song! Thanks a lot for posting this !

  • I hope one day to be doing your solo stuff you have on here!! :) Wish me luck

  • Thank you for this lesson. Greetings from Switzerland!

  • great lesson man :)

  • I just bought my first guitar and this is the first song I am learning. You are a wonderful teacher, Justin - thank you so much!

But could someone please explain the finger picking pattern for the bridge? I can't understand it from the video. Thank you :)

  • awesome tutorials =D agreeing with malissa

  • Awosome

    :)

  • Aw, you make it look so simple.

  • That's a very good teatcher. Thank you.

  • When you feel like....you're a G!! brilliant

  • 5:16 what's the point in doing E minor. (finger on A, D string second fret) we are not touching it? it seems from E right to G,B,E.

  • Justin, I hate you but for one reason only! You are so good on the guitar!!! I've been using your lessons and been playing for just over a year... You are a legend, good work

  • LOVE YOU SOOO MUCH

  • Nice lesson. Is the G chord fretted on the 2nd string 3rd fret, cos the tabs on line seem to suggest it is, but it doesn't sound right to me, ordinary G with an open 2nd string sounds better to me?

  • To do" the mental bit" at 6.27 Justin is simply breaking/rolling a Dsus4 chord then pulling off the first string third fret with his pinky, lifting his middle finger to reveal a dsus2 and then hammering it back on to create a standard d chord. Hope this helps.

  • great lesson but i hate my nails lol :P they are so ugly, that have to grow em

  • Sod learning REM! I wanna know how you did that little mental bit at 6:27!

  • Am I being dumb here. If you are playing the EM and playing strings 6 321 123 why are you even playing an EM as you are not playing any chords you hold down? Ive convinced myself I am doing something wrong :)

  • Hah, I see what you mean, the four strings being picked are 'open' anyway...

Maybe I'm being dumb too, but I think you're right.

  • same here lol

  • yes, you play the Em chord anyway just to keep in mind what you're doing. I think this is helpful especially for beginner player

  • @askabloke

I noticed the same thing, didn't make much sence :P but i listened to the song carefully and with "Em" it actually goes 654 123, not 632 123 as Justin did it. and while we're at it, with "A" it's 543 123, not 532 123.

  • thank you... :)

  • A lot of thanx from The Netherlands!!!

I love your lessons and learn a lot from you! (You're cute too!)

  • I Agree, thanks justin ;)

  • SO CLOSE To BE ABLE TO PLAY IT....CAN'T YOU DO THE BRIGDE PART AN EASIER WAY?!

  • love your lessons justin what about some t rex im sure it would be no problem to a player like you

  • thanks from belgium ;-)

  • Thanks you, nice lesson.

  • Is it really a f# minor in the bridge? I think a F#major works, too.

  • justin your great man !!, u really help, especially for the kids' who's parents don't appreciate they're music, all i can afford right now is a thank you but one day i'll buy one of your t shirts or sumthin..lol..!!!! THANK YOU JUSTIN !!!

  • Justin-you rule- you're one of the good ones on here. With all your teaching you'd think you could afford a chair! ;

  • I love that you show a close up of the finger picking. Most lessons on the internet don't show a close up and play so fast that you can't figure out how to do it. Thank you!

  • These lessons are briliant! Thanks!

  • This is a cool lesson. BUT please can abybody tell my is it necessary to hold E minor, cause you don"t even touch it by picking. Maybe I'm retarded, but I need to know. thanks

  • I noticed the same thing then i thought maybe i fucked up the e minor, I think ill just leave it open.

  • exactly what I wondered. I thouf´ght I was the retard but maybe we are two now:)

  • the head bobbing really helps, lmao, nice!

  • The variation just after G to A minor, it looks like he pauses inbetween those two chords, at 1:08. Can anyone tell me what chord that is and what you have to pick? Thanks!

  • I think that after he plays G for the second time (without playing the E) he plays 6th string 2nd fret, 4th open and 5th open and then goes to E minor and then A minor. Check it out. Be well!

  • Excellent...finally i may learn to play this song without getting bored....he's so cute i can watch it 100 times....which is probably the amount of time i need to practice it !! lol

  • can someone tell me what the first chord is in the bridge??

    I can't find it anywhere....

  • Can anybody write which chords it is and in the right order.. pls! :)

  • merci, merci beaucoup...... very good lessonssssssssss!!

  • Your lessons are brilliant! Thanks a million.

  • I can't wait to play this. I've just began playing. Know all notes, and 3 chords so far. A, E, D. I adore REM, and the whole finger picking thing is so cool. I've only been learning for about 2 days. I'm officially addicted to guitar. THANKS SO MUCH for your awesome lesson's Justin. I'm so glad I found the website and your videos. :)

  • thanks dude i always knew the first 2 chords but could never figure out the rest nice one man am playing it already after like just watching this the once

  • hey justin

how u play the part just b4 the chorus

  • I'm a beginner, and I practice on an electric guitar. I want to be able to play this song, but I'm struggling on the d chord. Is that common, or is my technique just terrible? No matter how I fret it, there just isn't enough clearance between the strings. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • well, it is easier on acoustic guitar... learn it there first, maybe? that is what i did.

  • Hey I'm fairly new to guitar myself but I hope I can help a lil. First of all you could try going to the Justins website and watching the video on how to do the D chord. Now I can't remember having too much trouble with the D chord but I know that if you'r persistant enough you'll get it in the end. When I started I couldnt do the A chord to save my life but now I find piss easy. Just keep at it and good luck. :)

  • lol... you got 5 thumbs down..

    I'll thumb u down now...

Be polite man.. i know he is in England and thought he is british and later i've checked his website...yes he is from tasmania...

  • thats British accent.. I love it too..

Justin is a wonderful teacher.. I've become a pro.. But website maintenance is expensive which he is holding up free for us.. so please do contribute and show him how much we like him..

  • love your accent, how is E chord?

  • E chord is

youre first 1 finger on 2 fret of the a string

and 2 finger on the 2 fret on the d string

  • E-022xxx

  • This was the first picking song I learned - about a year ago or so (and learned from you), so I just wanted to thank you! Super easy to understand and one of my favorite songs too. I still hate those barre chords though - got small hands!

  • This is really helpfull...thanks a lot!

  • i play this song but i like so much watchin ur lesson!

  • Does it matter if you only pluck using your thumb? I find it much easier doing this..

  • "finger style kinda song.." great lesson ¬.¬

  • What is the brand of your guitar?!

  • He plays a Maton. Awesome guitars!! Jack Johnson and Tommy Emmanuel play Matons too. Looks like he has a Custom Shop one. I´m thinking of getting one of these great guitars!

  • the sound of this acoustic is great!

  • is that a lonestar behind you???

  • thanks man, you're cute

    :D

  • that´s pretty awesome

  • that is so pretty to listen too. i wish i could play but can't. i did however just post myself singing "everybody hurts" give it listen if you like...

after hearing your video, maybe i'll try again to play.

  • F major in the middle, apart from that good stuff

    Justin as usual.

  • Sorry I meant to say F#major not minor chord, sorry.

  • thank you!! :)

  • Right I'm a fairly new guitarist. But why play the Em when the strings your picking are all open?

  • really it is a Am not Em and it is picked 6th, 4t, 3rd, 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

  • you inspire beginners!! thanks!!

  • your unlocking doors.Great

  • you help me alot! your videos are great!! thank you!!!!

  • You helped me a lot ! Thks

  • amazing... :)

  • yiu are amazing :)

  • you are amaizing :)

  • why do you need to grip the e-minor chord if you do not use the B and E (on 5th and 4th string) in the arpeggio?

  • thank you so much, now this song works. tahnk you

    from Germany. Chris

  • Hi Justin, Thanks so much for doing these lessons, I just found you a couple days ago.. I picked up guitar at 43 years old lol..i always plyed blues harmonica but now i have a desire to play guitar..

  • Enjoy the free lesson without sounding like an ass.

  • sorry that was brother ... he's a gay boy :D ignore him

  • arpeggio

  • Fine job my brother - on my way to mastering this wonderful song...

  • I have a beginner question :)

Wich strings do you pick if you have a 5/6 string chord and the progression is a 4string pick :)

The bass string (for G thats 6th string), and wich are the rest of them ?

  • nvm , should watch the vid after 4 min :p sorry

  • thanks for everythig justin,

  • Super video once again Justin thanks for the help best teacher around! xD

  • man sorry to ask but, why do you tell tus to do an E-minor if you only play open strings?

    nevertheless you rock!!

  • You play an e-minor with the left hand because it will be a very familiar chord for you. Although you don't play the e on the fourth string your left hand finds it easy to go to this position. Hope this helps.

  • Hmm, okay, I see what you mean now. I'm guessing it's the chord you would use if you strummed this rather than picking it. Sorry for previous comment.

  • when u do the em u hit the 6th 3rd 2nd 1st 2nd 3rd why hold the 4th and 5th (em) if ur hittin open strings.

  • wow i always wanted 2 learn this. cheers!!!!

  • I love this song. I can imagine myself playing it all day long! lol.

  • Hey, I just started learnig to play guitar...i love this song and hope to be able to perform it soon...;-)

Your are the best iteacher ever!!!

  • Thank you for making this!

  • wow ive seen this band live and i think ur better at it than them ;)

  • whats is it your doing between the G and the Em like the vatation as you call it ?

  • I'd like to know that as well.

  • I think he does the G chord one fret lower

  • I think you're right. Thanks.

  • You're welcome:)

  • I think he is doing a Bass run on the E-string to transition from the G to the E. I think it goes G - F# - E

  • Nice one Justin

  • i very like your lessons! rock on =)

  • same

    this band is realy gd

  • Great lesson! I've always wanted to learn this song.
