Man, fuck the hype on this guy. What the hell was this? I will admit, I enjoy some of his rhythm and chord work (even though you can tell he picked up a LOT from jamming with Hendrix) but the lead was just horrendous. 5:06 is just laughable. This is what I'm talking about Fusion snobs, is that supposed to be genius guitar work? A poor, mediocre attempt at a vocal guitar? Fuck McLaughlin, if this is him getting lost in the music at his very best, I don't want to hear anything else.
...... don't give a damn if the man is playing with a vintage Martin guitar or a "plastic" Ovation (in that level of playing, material things like... guitars don't count much)...You simply can't capture that on film... The man is flying between clouds upon Ganges River ,he is touching something most of us mortals can't even dare to dream about...He is close to the Divine,as Coltrane was......He becomes the music......
Thanks for posting this. Of all JM's albums it is still 'My Goal's Beyond' that never fails to hit the spot. Hearing him stretch these pieces out live is certainly a privilege, and this version is simply stunning. There was something about his playing at this point that never re-emerged in subsequent acoutic projects, maybe it's the raw bluesy feel and sense of freedom he injects. Whatever it is, it's wonderful.
@murrmac well actually he played ovations on most of his acoustic performance, in that particular period of time, and he always sounds really great. the audio of the clip actually sucks.
i dont understand you people. this is pure art, pure genius on act, its flowing naturaly, theres nothing beter than this, if you cant understand, you are realy pathetic and i feel sorry for you. dont bother to be smart when youre not, just enjoy. if you cant, well, hahaha too bad for you
@G3FORC3 Let's face it. My performance is generally poor on any of my vids. I'll be the first to admit that. It's I sing loud when I belt it but I'm a bit self conscious in this house. Anyway, I'm just a smear on the bottom of John's sandaled foot.
I know he's experiencing "duende" when he plays. It's just getting lost in your music. Enjoying the moment.

Check out the recently posted Munich '72 solo concert (part 5/5) for a quite sublime version of this tune.

It's just a shame that for some reason he chose to play this on an Ovation guitar.
Let's be honest, the playing is stellar, but the sound is crap.
On a decent guitar, this would have been magical.

His statement of the melody is just breathtakingly gorgeous. His ability to vary his picking dynamics at that speed are really extraordinary.

I don't recall this being heavy metal... why does it sound like he's playing through a marshall? You are hitting your inputs too hard!

John's " MY GOAL'S BEYOND " still stands as the best acoustic album - lite-weight as those beautiful songs are...
I wish John had been able to record more albums while he was possessed, as he is in this clip.
Many come- few are chosen.
Thanks for posting

@G3FORC3 My Goals Beyond is a great album but that possessed part is creepy if not naive.

@hueseph
Creepy ? Naive,eh ?
Well, I'll see your creepy and your naive... and I'll raise you a demented.
YOU KNOW YOU KNOW.
This is great stuff becaue he forgets himself and lets the beyond enter.
You play quite well...but when you sing; forget yourself and that anyone is listening.

There is a Solo from Paco De Lucia in the beginning of this show. He plays Bulerias. Do you have it by any chance?
