  • Amazing. I wish we had places like that close to me in Ohio.

  • This video right here started my obsession with England.

  • Hi Gavin.

Do you work on photoshop before posting your photos in this vedio? because the colors really look amazing... :))))

  • wow i love this place...:D

  • Whats the advantage of using an ND grad over HDR ?

  • @IAmTheFilmFanatic Well a ND graduated filter acts like sunglasses on the sky (or where ever you position it). Therefore it doesn't effect the ground, and you wont get that weird haze from where the bright bits meet the mids and darks.

  • @SilentEcho8 Thanks :) Thats really helpful !

  • You inspired me Gavin... I always fall blank when it comes to just going out and having fun with my camera.

    Cheers Mate

  • Hey great videos! what kind of ND filter is that?

    cheers

  • amazing shots, keep up the good work! great inspiration :)

  • what is the camera you are using please?

  • @hhasoon1 5dmk2

  • It looks a little like Stanton Moor near Bakewell, either way it looks beautiful.

  • Where is that place? It looks cool on that place, that's a good footage and good background.

  • Where exactly in the Peak District is this? It's beautiful!

  • What kind of strap is that?

  • Comment removed

  • you are an absolute gifted photographer =]

    your work is stunning!

  • how did you expose the sky and the foreground at the same time? were you using the HDR technique?

    Thank you =)

  • @marshalmathers You can see in a few of the shots that he's holding a graduated neutral density filter, I imagine he was holding it in front of his lens for those shots, he just doesn't show himself doing that. He really should mention that in his video so as not to make people think that shooting wide landscapes in the middle of the day and achieving a balanced sky/foreground is an easy thing to do without such a filter.

  • 3:50 is excellent!

  • Gavin, I love to watch your videos because you teach rather well. However, I was hoping that in the future you would put the information of the image on the screen when you show the still. I would like to know what your shutter/fstop is for each image. Thanks

  • DO U MAKE MONEY with the photos u take?

  • are you using a polarized lens?

  • Really great Pictures ! But it is a very beautful location there too :-)

  • I really like this 15min challenges but i would like to see you talk about the post you do to the pics slightly as well. Like the landscape shot at 4:23ish did you bring out the rock in post as it seems a lot clearer then the rest.

  • 2:05 im just excited with that movement !

it is like a combat training movement, but when he "unfolds" the camera its like O.o

hahahaahah i would like to see that in real combat situation...

  • wow, what a beautiful place, wish i had these kind of landscapes in my country. . . my country has been mostly urbanized, not much nature left.

  • This is an awsome video.

I sometimes have troubles with ideas, I'm don't know really what to shoot. And here you give us some basic ideas and a ''map'', how to find them.

    Great work :)

  • what is that card you are using?

  • Hi gavin, Are you using a Circular Polarizer in this video?

  • what is the big deal with "lens's" i only have 1 lense, (came with the camera) lol. i have no idea about camera's except that the apruature or something makes it really bring when taking night shots and dark when making appear like night and shutter speed. any videos on being great with photography without going to school for it? if so please let me know

  • Great video Gavin!

  • For you the Lumix FZ100 is good?

How Much? 1 to 10! please

    From Costa Rica Nice Videos

  • @andyman1005 Nope, Grey grad filter.

  • You should really come to Dartmoor in Devon for the next challenge. It's beautiful there.

  • @DeadWhiteButterflies Heading to Exmoor in a few weeks time. Will try and do Dartmoor next time.

  • Hmmm was that a 24-105 lens you were using?. P.S> Love your stream :)

  • @mafiot4e Indeed it was. Great lens.

  • @PhotoGavin what do you prefere 24-70 L or 24-105 L ?

  • what was that thing in your hand at 3:28

  • hey where did you get your scrap? i like buy one like that :) nice photo

  • Great video Gavin as always, I've seen your toturial in Photo magazine too, fantastic boat in the jar :) I tried to creat one and it was great result, Thanks a lot

  • You should come to Bognor Regis to do a 15 minutes photo challenge:)))

  • @mumuc32 I might just do that.

  • Perfect as usual Gavin. Loving your tutorials. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  • What software do you use ??

  • @jimmyswwf I use Photoshop CS4/5 and/or Lightroom 3

  • i love your 1 minute chalenges:)

    it's intresting and helpfull!

  • @CarpeNoctemZise One minute challenges.. now that's a thought ;-)

  • @PhotoGavin

    xD

    yeah, i mean 15,sorry!

but one minute ....that whould be a real challenge!

i whould be able to take like....one photo:p

  • Great Tutorial ..again, sadly when I go the Peaks it raining all the time ! thanks Gav

  • @KungFUcat10 It rained and rained and rained when we went. Then suddenly we had a couple of hours fine weather. I guess I got lucky.

  • @PhotoGavin @PhotoGavin How Long have you been a Professional Photographer, if I had half the experience as you i would be more then happy..i have decided to endulge in something i have always liked for the past two years

    4eyesphography.co.uk

  • Great video! Quick Camera question, what do you think about the Canon t2i?

  • @tylerismybf0 The Canon t2i/550D is an awsome little camera. It's a baby 7D or a 60D without the twisty screen. Gets my vote.

  • Gavin, I was hoping you can help me decide on a point-and-shoot digital camera. I know that you use DSLRs but with your camera experience and expertise I was wondering if you can help me guide me in deciding my choice between these two digital cameras. I have a choice to choose between the Nikon Coolpix S6000 or the Samsung Dualview TL200. Which should I choose? I have seen pictures taken from both cameras and still have a hard time choosing. What is the best overall between the two?

  • @susancantell Honestly never tried either. They're probably both decent, but if either shoot RAW images I'd grab that one.

  • Are you wearing the Black Rapid RS-7 That strap is awesome :D

  • @ghostgaffdeck08 It's sure it. As a self confessed strap hater the Black rapid is the first strap I actually choose to use. Infact I liked it so much I got one for my wife (not as a birthday present you understand)

  • HI SIR, I WOULD LIKE YOU TO TALK ABOUT BACK BUTTON AUTO FOCUS, ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES, ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE METERING METHODS, THAT´S COOL. THANK YOU. BYE.

  • @cometeesta2010 I don't use it. I tried and it just wasn't for me. 25 years of half pressing the shutter button is a hard habit to break.

  • Brilliant video! Thanks for the super easy to digest information! Love the comparison side by side shots, especially loved the comparison of the old mill stone and how the wide angled shot of the mill stone turned out.

  • Where's the new video??!!??

  • @chicagodrew1128 It's up now!!! But it comes with a favour attached. Thanks.

  • More 15 minutes challenge gavin.

You continue to amazed us with your tutorial vid.

  • @bench0780 The next one is in the can and it really was a challenge. Look out for me in an empty field in the rain :-0

  • Hey Gavin,

Love the pictures from the peak district. 2 quick questions:

how did you get the sky so dark while the ground was so well exposed.

Was it using a graduated filter or did you edit it later on the computer?

  • @shahofuea @3:54 you can see him walk off with a graduated filter in his hand, so I'm assuming that he used it for some of these shots.

  • @shahofuea Look closely at and you may see a grey grad pocking out of my back pocket. Shhh let's keep it our little secret ;-)

  • Gavin,

Do you sell any of your photography? I don't see any for sale on your Gavtrain.com website.

  • @97BuckeyeNut I doubt anyone would want to buy them, but I thank you for being so kind. (Made me smile)

  • How much post processing do you do on the photos shown?

  • @dima9944 A lot less then everyone assumes. Shot in RAW (of course) so I tend to apply a bit of Clarity and tickly the fill light & recovery a bit.

  • Always a fun ride coming along with you like that. I think a follow up on how and/or what you did in the digital darkroom would be helpful. Iam sure the images are not as shot. A little on the post processing would be nice too. Cheers and thank you for sharing!

  • Ohh, Finally a new 15 min photo challenge :D I couldn't wait!! BTW, is this place near Sheffield?? I am asking because I have been in very similar place...

  • @OpticHunter93 Yes it's very close to Shefield.

  • @OpticHunter93 Sheffield was about 10 miles up the road. If you get the chance to go back the location is called "Surprise View" which describes it perfecty.

  • I would do anything to know who DISLIKED this video!

    Gavin, amazing photo challenge :D

    Thank you very much!

  • @zohairy2000 I suspect other photographers, whose videos perhaps aren't as popular as Gavin's?

  • Gavin,

another great 15 mins. You captured some outstanding shots.

  • What kind of strap is that? Thats nice!

  • @mpc16pads1 It the RS-7 from Black Rapid

  • Hello Gavin, Always enjoy your tutorials - this was one of the better ones. Thanks and look forward to the next. Cheers, Bernz

  • Que lugar hermoso. Donde es?

  • hello gavin, everytime is a pleasure to see you ... I see you used a ND filter for this shooting. ;-) The location is very interesting and would be ideal for portraits set. Have you used the 24-105?

  • @cesco974 Yes, that was the 24-105L you saw there.

  • Hi Gavin, yet another great wee video, thanks :))

Btw- what is the neck/camera strap yuo are using in this video ?

  • Hi Gavin yet another great wee video, thanks :))

Btw- what is the neck/camera strap you are using in this video ?

  • @Jcscoob It's the excellent RS-7 from Black Rapid

  • @PhotoGavin Hi gavin I asked you about the camera strap (2 months ago)

got one delivered at the start of the week and you were right ...... its excellent, cheers ;))

  • amazing stuff as always gavin.i was wondering whats the exact name of the location.and what time of the day and year u would suggest for traveling there.

  • @wahid2612 Location-"Surprise View", Time-17:30, Date-Last Saturday 14/8/10

  • I really like all of your videos...thank's a lot...

  • Beautiful day, beautiful view, and beautiful photos...

  • What a beautiful place! Amazing shots again!!!!!

  • Are you done all this photo on Manual mode?

  • You should start doing longer time challenges, you are fun to watch and inspiring!

  • Great as allways!

    Good Job!

  • Would you only do these kind of shots when shooting at sunset ?

  • Thanks for another inspirational video, great skies by the way!

  • Love your photo challenges. Can't wait until you post more. You make it seem so easy.

  • @ANNABELLE19671 He does make them seem so easy ...I spend much more then 15 minutes lol

  • @KungFUcat10 Me too. I would still be trying to get my gear together when the 15 minutes is up. I need to work on that more. Oh - I also need to get some type of photo editor that would make my pictures look like his. Fat chance of that

  • Aside from converting to black and white, were those images manipulated at all? I love this btw. I've subscribed, and Im going to check out all your videos now.

  • hi there, i have some questions,

how do u take that picture of minute 2.00??? is because of the lens or photographer ability???

I have a canon xti with 2 lenses one 18-55 and other 55-250...

  • @elbrigado "... is because of the lens or photographer ability?" It's both. The focal length causes the compression but the photographer has to understand what their equipment can do.

  • hi gavin when you use the grad filter for the sky, is it the lee glass filters where they are clear at the bottom and graduated grey at the top. When you place the grad filter over the lens do you hold it handheld? Also does your camera do a correct exposure once the grad filter is held over the lens?? ( if you know what i mean )

  • @england2345able I have a Kood Grey Grad (can't afford a Lee). Yes I hand hold it and yes I let the camera sort the shutter speed (I work in Av mode)

  • Hi Gavin love the shots and the compositions

  • I love ur 15 min. photo challenges!

  • That's so pretty!!! But it's in England so I won't be able to visit for a very, verrrryyy long time lol.

  • i watchall your video's and they are always GREAT, this one included,, cheers, a friend of mine has just starrted in photography and i told her about you, she tries and copies your challanges,, cheers again

  • I really love your channel!!

  • Another great video! Thanks! :D

  • I've been on the top of that rock at 1:00 :)

Some really nice shots you took there, considering you had but 15 mins! :)

  • amazing =)

  • Gavin: How much editing do you do and what program do you use to edit? Thanks!

  • @AppGenius I do a lot less post processing then people assume and I use Lightroom 3 and/or Photoshop CS4.

  • oh wow gavin your so undiscovered and amazing!

  • What strap are you using? it looks really good

  • @PapaAnimal It's the RS-7 from Black Rapid and I totally love it.

  • Gavin, I really like your "15 minutes photo challenge"!!

    Please more videos like this!

  • Could you explain or perhaps make a video on how you edit these photos in photoshop/lightroom?

  • @victorvanpuyenbroeck Many of the techniques are on my Beach Teach DVD. Check out the link to my website on my channel page or in the video discription.

  • Great video as always,

Inspirational area you visited.. so lucky :)

  • Wouldnt you not get enough light if you put the aperture really high?

  • @MonkeyWithBuder Being outside, he should have plenty of light for a high aperture

  • @MonkeyWithBuder You would get plenty of light but the shutter speed would have to be very slow. He'd/You'd need a tripod, even in full sun, to avoid camera shake. :)

  • @MonkeyWithBuder At smaller apertures like f16 or f22 the shutter speed drops to a much slower speed. If it drops to low for the focal length I'm using I increase the ISO.

My cameras can produce great shoots at 400 and 800 ISO when shot in RAW and processed in Lightroom3 / CS5

  • You should do some infrared photos out there! I think that would be rather interesting... Great job on this and all of your videos, Gavin!

  • thanks!

    really enjoy watching

  • Thanks Gavin! Great video.

  • How the heck did you find Narnia? Can I get there from here?

Nice use of the compression effect by using the zoom. (The longer the focal length the more compression you get).

I see very few photographer talking about that effect, but cinematographers use it very often.

  • Could you please post a video sometime explaining how you edit images such as these

  • Are you using a R-strap?

  • @ayelogan Yes it's the RS-7 from Black Rapid. I've only had it a couple of weeks but it's already a permanent fixture on my camera.

  • I wondered how you organised all your photos on your computer like in folders etc?

  • @SadXAdam I use a series of general folders e.g. "15 min chall" and then sub folders e.g. "peak district"

  • How do you prevent the sky from being blown out?

  • @LiztheBRAVE

He probly has either a filter, darkens it in photoshop, or uses HDR. My bets on the filter.

  • @LiztheBRAVE Most shots were OK with a general exposure, but I also had a grey grad filter for the BIG sky shots. Watch closely and you'll see it in my back pocket !

  • Gavin, this is your best 15 minute challenge so far!

I love how you take the time to explain what settings you are changing on the camera. I learned a lot more just watching this challenge.

Please record many, many more 15 minute challenges!

  • hi Gavin, i have a question for you.. i'm using f16 (aperture priority mode) to shoot buildings during my last holiday in Italy but the shutter speed seems to slow down and make the picture overexpose a bit. ISO is 100. How do u manage to overcome the overexpose in this video cause you've said you using f11-f16( Aperture mode)? or is there none overexpose in yours..

    thx..

  • When in aperture mode, just adjust the exposer setting a stop down.

Or, make note of the shutter speed the camera is indicating, switch to full manual, and drop it a stop (or two).

When you close the aperture (in aperture mode) the camera will always slow down the shutter to compensate for the reduction in light allowed to enter the camera.

If you increase the ISO the camera will speed up the shutter.

  • @barbadoneo As the aperture number goes up the shutter speed will come down and can cause camera shake or motion blur. Increase the ISO to lift the shutter speed.

  • Hi Gavin,

You never seem to fail me. If you ever plan to do a workshop near Sheffield way then please let us know.

Where you around Surprise View by ay chance?

  • @sheffieldvids Yes it was indeed "Surprise View". If you're going take a credit card as the car park pay&display machine doesn't take coins !!!

  • Beautiful photos. Unbelievable place!!

  • I think you should make them 20 minute challenges because I always want to see more :)

  • Another great video! Was that a grad. filter you used in the sky shot?

  • @phirepix Only in the shots where there was more sky the land.

  • your B&W photos do you take them like that or do you take them in color and change in PS?

  • @tomber220 If you shoot JPG always, always, ALWAYS take your black & white shots in colour and process to Black & white.

Shooting in RAW (which I use) means that you get a colour shot even if you set the camera to B&W.

  • @PhotoGavin In addition, never, and I mean never use the "de-saturate", or "convert to grey scale" option.

In photoshop there is a new adjustment layer option for converting to B&W. Also, the "Calculations" edit is very effective.

I like to just copy one or two of the color channels into empty layers and blend (sometimes two of the same color channel) using layer mode (overlay, color burn, etc.)

  • @PhotoGavin what are the advantages of RAW vs JPG?
