Such a shame. This recording shows why MJ was so angry with Motown, they always restrained his vocals. This song would of been awesome if they had allowed him to sing it his own way.
this is such a disservice to the original Al Green version....this cover should have never been attempted....nothing can touch Al's version.....no disrespect for MJ, his stuff was good in his own way, but he can't hold a light to Al for this song or anything in this vein....
The problem was Motown and how they wanted him to sing. MJ complained about how they made him sing songs, he hated it. This is why MJ's version is so uninspired and boring. Even the production is whack. The last album they did allowed for MJ to stretch out, that would of been nice to have this song recorded by him freely.
It sounds like a practice session where he's just learning the words. Please don't give me a hard time for saying so. I do love Michael Jackson and I am a HUGE fan, but I'm going to tell it how I see it, regardless. Michael has much more talent than that, even when he was eight.
It sounds like a practice session where he's just learning the words. Please don't give me a hard time for saying so. I do love Michael Jackson and I am a HUGE fan, but I'm going to tell it how I see it, regardless.
I'm surprised Michael sang it without soul. I guess back in the day when he had no control. Al Green does it MUCH BETTER. And I am more an MJ fan than most people (is that possible??:-)
even though the arrangement seems to drag...Michael still sings it well...That's one of the reasons why they transitioned to other recording companies to have a little more control of what they were singling...
i got a question: can someone explain to me how doing covers worked during Motown era? i'm just saying i see a lotttttttttt of artists such as MJ, Stevie, Quincy, Al Green, other 70s and/or Motown groups doing covers of each others' songs and other artists during that time, and put it on their albums. Were copyright laws more loose back then? Just curious...
@rtoriq alright well here goes...the laws werent more loose its just that when it came to Berry Gordy and his record company they were lol he liked to have complete control over his artists and made it to where most of their royalties went to him .Most of the time he would give a singers song away to another Motown group or singer without them knowing .But when the song doesnt become a hit the 1st time he gives it to another Motown singer/group thinking maybe it will become a hit with them.
I think, I'm not positive, but most of the songs written during that era were written by the same people...or individuals that are part of the same group. You'll find that Smokey Robinson wrote a lot of songs for himself that were then covered or given to the Temptations, Jackie Wilson, The Supremes, and the Jacksons. I discovered this by just reading the liner notes of my Motown records and saw that so many songs were written by the same team. Hope this helps!
this song could of been much better, especially if it was recorded in 1975, that is when Michael started singing sexy for the girls. Also this version suffers from the bland singing and production that MJ hated. Its good but it could of been a great classic
As much love that I have for Mike, I know he would agree that this was not one of his best works...I don't think he was really feelin' the arrangement so he didn't bother putting that much effort into it...Everything is just not for everybody and I think he woud've agreed...And also, he was reaching puberty at this point so he was in the midst of perfecting his voice...I think that had a lot to do with it too.
This was recorded in 1973 earlier in his career, probably later he would have done a better job. None of the vocal hiccups and whoops, he did later. This is more of a disco sound from the era. Sounds lackluster...not like MJ really. Doesn't sound likes he even tried. Sounds like he's bored. Downloaded it anyway because its Michael Jackson baby!!!!!
@kevin1278 agree, dont think this song is suitable for him al green version is definately it.Its always a pleasure hear MJ covering soul classics anyway.I dont think he was mature enough at the time to sing this song
You can tell his voice was maturing which makes it better.I love this picture, like he's playing a role of a peasant paperboy in the 1940s this song is awesome also.Geez!
Like I stated in the description, this song was released in the 80s and they mixed it and added those typical 80s sounds to it.
Earlier this year, a new box set came out with all the solo songs of Michael he released with motown. The original 70s mix of this song was included and it sounds SO good!
i am totally loving the past few weeks as I discover new j5 and mj music here on the tube. Motown had a practice of having several of their groups record a song. Then a decision was made on which version to release. That is one of the reasons we have all this unrealeased material that seem to be "covers" of other Motown artists' work.
Either way Mike is amazing and I am sad he is gone.
I have just dusted off the 'Farewell my Summer Love' cassette I bought in the 80's as it does not seem to be on CD yet but the cassette still sounds great. Michael's versitility was astounding. As the man said 'I am not like other guys'....so true!
Ya, so many geat songs from Micahel That I have never been aware of until now... for example look at Buterflies, and Heaven Can Wait.... there is much we are not aware of about Micahel Jackson.. Like the fact he was found innocent by the court of law.
