Beautiful. Is there a source of written music arrangements available for the 'rest of us' as you have so generously shared with this piece? I'm thinking of O'Carolan. There are basic tunes available such as those in 'theSession' but no chording and my knowledge of theory is nonexistent.
@jaisvikt Thanks. I added a link to my page containing quite a lot of written music to the info section above (sorry - can't post links in youtube comments!)
@SuperBeanson I originally tried doing it to reduce the volume, so I could play without disturbing the neighbours so much. However, even though it didn't make much difference to the volume, for a while at least I preferred the sound with the "baffles", so I'd use them anyway. I don't bother these days. They're really easy to attach (using sticky-backed velcro).
@damscobig Yes and no. It's easy to pick up, press a button and make a sound that, if you like the sound of the concertina, you'll like. However, the qualities that make it easy to start with can, in some ways, be seen as limitations in the long run. Like learning any musical instrument, you'll only get as much out of it as you put in - there are no short cuts to practice and playing.
Probably, but it's probably not easy, and probably would need an Anglo with quite a few buttons (so you could match up bellows direction on the tune/accompaniment). I don't play Anglo.
It's always worth trying to avoid the oom-pa sounds, in my opinion!
hey, i notice you seem to have baffles atatched to the ends of your concertina - do these server to soften the sound (the sound has a lovely gentle feel about it) or quieten it a bit or what are they for? i am interested
yes - to soften the sound. I recorded the audio for this with mics/recording gear separate from the camera, and added a little reverb before combining it with the video - so the audio sounds a little nicer than you'd get with recording audio straight into the video camera.

Hi, may I ask why you have the boards over the ends- is it for protection or to diminish the volume?- thanks

Is it possible to play that style of bass accompaniment on an Anglo? (I'm a beginner.)
It sounds so much cooler than a simple "oom-pa-pa" thing. Love your playing, thanks for your posts.

That's a nice sounding concertina.

What make is your concertina?

Wheatstone - probably from around 1910.

I'm confused about the baffles. You don't mean leather behind the fretwork, do you? I see a sort of gap in the ends, is it some other kind of baffle?
Sorry to be a pain. Nice playing by the way.
mistermucky17 4 years ago
There's an extra wooden "end" attached to each end of the original concertina end by velcro.
ProfRat 4 years ago
Ah, I see it now, with the centre open to get to the buttons. Thanks, I've never seen that before.

Really nice. I've been learning anglo concertina, but this makes me wonder if the english isn't the way to go.
