Gyroscopes would be useful. Maybe they use them; i can't one way or another. But it definitely does dwell on one foot, for just a tiny fraction of a second, as it starts and stops.

Another really neat thing is the way it is able to stop suddenly at the end without tipping over or losing its balance.
