Just curious, what freak'n gas station is that with gas over $5 a gallon? The highest on record was summer 2008 and it wasn't quite there, although if Wall Street and Big Oil get their wishes it will be that soon.
Economics 101 tells us we will have a series of price increases & a series of reductions in the total amount of gas consumed. Eventually the price will reach a point where gas will become a niche good purchased by few consumers & other consumers will have found alternatives to gas. After this, there will still be plenty in the ground, consumers will have found alternatives that make more economic sense to them, & will be little, if any, demand for gas!
Everyone that thinks the private sector will bring down the price of gas is living in a fantasy land. Big oil and Wall Street are directly responsible for the prices at the pump and politicians on both sides are powerless to stop it. The only thing to do to fight it is to change the rules to make it cheaper and force them in to compliance until alternative energy is available and affordable. If profits fall from trillions to millions overnight I will not shed a single tear.

The US also isn't as compacted, there's more travel on average to get to places and not as much available public transport. Because of the extreme distances in transporting goods gas prices also effect commodities more because of cost.

That was when I noticed that it was the Lochness monster disguised as a gas station cashier. So I said, "Oh, get outta here you damn Lochness monster. I ain't givin' you no tree fiddy!"
I think if people had a more vicious and irratable attitude towards the gov. I think they would think twice and with the publics welfare in mind. Lets face it: We Americans have become to soft and ignorant in what our Gov. is doing. Even the "experts" are proven wrong, make mistakes, misunderstand the system. I think it time for change that the people bring, not from some guy funded out the ass running a campaign, selling fake promises.

@amustb Our President gave 2 billion of our tax dollars to Brazil and Columbia for gas exploration and drilling. At the same time issued drilling moratoriums on its own people in the gulf of Mexico. This cost 100,000 + US jobs and raised gas prices. Our new President will quickly correct the failed and destructive policies of the Obama Administration.

The "Fish and Wildlife" will vote in September to put the sagebrush lizard on the endangered species list stopping drilling in west Texas which provides 20% of our nations gas. 28,000. more thousand jobs. Don't forget drilling moratoriums in the gulf 87,000. jobs.. p.s. God is spelled with a capitol "G"

Fish and Wildlife doesn't put animals on the endangered list so they can stop drilling or construction, they do it because the animals in question are in genuine danger of going extinct, and personally, I'm a fan of animals. the sagebrush lizard is a pretty cool lizard, I'd like to keep it round

In Holland the current price is about 8.7 dollar per gallon (or 1.70 euro per liter). Our gasoline is to damn higher.
