One of the greats. Lot of opinions on here about this song. Kris kristofferson wrote this Roger miller was the first to record it and I believe that Jerry reed also had CGP status
jocormer1000,we have the same comment about this great man,we enjoying listening to his treasures again and again,I will never get tired of listening to his musics,Its a great pleasure watching all his skills and I know most of us missing him and pray for him at the same time, what a tragic lost to us all,Daddy we are missing you so very much indeed,May God Bless you for all you have left us behind its priceless,R.I.P.My Great Musician,I will never forget you,
@Gatekpoin Not only did Mr. Atkins forget more about the guitar than any of us will ever know (including Tommy, lol) He invented 90% of the technical tricks used by all modern guitar players, including false harmonics, broken chords, etc etc the list is endless. I've played his music since I was 5 and have made my living as a guitarist, I am 42 and still learning the nuances of his genius. These videos are such a gift to us, just as he was. He helped me get my work visa for the US. Great man!RIP
His style and playing was so aggressive that he almost couldn't paly acoustics as his fingers where getting chewed up. So while he makes it look effortless there is a lot going on.
Chet is amazing, when my grandfather bought my first guitar some 5 years ago, he said and i quote "you can't quit this, until you can play like Chet Atkins" well that's not gonna happen so i'll be playing for the rest of my life. :)
@Dave86Vegas Incorrect, Kris wrote it, Roger Miller cut it right away, and shortly after that it was introduced to Janis. As much as I love the old Roger Miller stuff, he did not have a hand in writing the song at all. Kris wrote it for Cash, but at that time Kris was just a songwriter so he didnt make any of his songs famous. Ive got 3 cd's here all with this song, Kris, Cash and Joplin, and they all list Kris as the writer.
@24428997 honest mistake dude since Roger Miller was first to record it so go back to your day full of creating hate and discontent on the internet in your underwear, playing with yourself over videos of children playing, eating your hot pocket for dinner, then calling it a night in your seedy little studio apartment. Dont bother responding for I will be busy jamming on my gretsch 6122 to continue on how sorry you are.
If it wasn't for Chet Atkins, we may not be having discussion about whether Tommy Emmanuel or Doyle Dykes are the greatest players out there. Chet set the bar very high, and his influence has created some of the great guitar players we see today.
A few (like Tommy Emmanuel and Doyle Dykes) have cleared the bar that Chet set so high. But, if it wasn't for Chet -- there may well be no Tommy Emmanuel and others that we are now suggesting are the greatest of all time.
Been playing for about 25 years. Now I know I'm not a bad player at all, but like in any field, there is always a true master of the art somewhere out there. Chet was such a master. His ritme and timing are insane, his lefthand-technique is incredible. To any one doubting how hard these arrangements are I would say, buy a book with Atkins music in it and give it a try. You probably won['t succeed but you sure become a better player in the progress!
I find that when ppl hear an older artist perform, they try to compare them to someone in their generation, or discount the guy's talent for different reasons! Look, kiddos, playing music is not a competition. Enjoy it for what it is, fingerstyle picking at it's best!
U can lad. Download 'Real Player'...(just googe it) and you can download videos via that. When the programme is installed on ur pc, play a video on u-tube. The option DOWNLOAD THIS VIDEO appears when u move ur cursor over the playing video. It saves to ur real player library on ur pc and u can then convert 2 mp3 if u want.
Second best. I went to see Tommy Emmanuel last week. I play as well, but that's like saying Rosanne Barr and Jessica Biel are both female.... I've never seen or heard anyone like Tommy....anytime you have a chance, go listen live, it's worth whatever the price of admission is.
@galta269 big call to call chet 2nd best .. .Tommy would be the first to admit he's taken so much inspiration from Chet .. ya gotta give props for innovation ..
For your info: He was a "bare-footed hillbilly" learning to play from the radio in the hills. He didnt know about overdubs and thought you had to play it all at once until somebody in Nashville said "You dont know about overdubs!?
??? It says in the booklet that came with My Chet CD's that Chet's dad was a music teacher and started teaching him young. He knew all about overdubs, but created his own picking style so he didnt have to. Jerry Reed learned the guitar from listening to the radio.
To Mitchflorida: the version looks boring because Mr. Atkins plays the instrument so effortlessly. Tommy Emmanuel once said something to the effect that many people don't give Chet his due credit because he made playing the guitar look so simple. But if you paid attention to what he was doing, it was truly amazing. There will never be another Chet Atkins.
there could never be another, that's for sure. he took thumbpick fingerpicking to another level, plus think of his arranging and composing of new and existing melodies, thus raising attention to this wonderful style. just the volume of his work is amazing, not withstanding the work he must've put in to make his playing so good and tight. and all the records he made, the musicians he influenced... i don't think tommy could be as awsome as he is without chet's shoulders to stand on...
One thing I truly admire about Chet was the pride he took from having influenced so many guitarists. I remember how proud he was of Richard Smith, who at the age of 12, was playing Chet's licks, and difficult Chet licks, perfectly.
Not only does Richard do Chet's licks, but Jerry Reed's, Django's and everybody else's. And he does his own stuff. Now that both Chet and Jerry are gone, go see Richard Smith. They live on.
I agree with you discharge13. I'm a guitar player, but it would take me years and years to be able to play like him. He was one of the most gifted guitar player of all times. RIP Mr. Atkins
@discharge13 Hence the term "CGP" (Certified Guitar Player). Didn't Chet only give 3 people that label? Himself, Tommy Emmanuel, and I don't remember the third one. I'd give anything in the world to have the talent of Chet Atkins on guitar...
@DUGGER1947 I found it on his bio. You were partially right, there were 5 CGP's but it consisted of himself (Chet Atkins), Tommy Emmanuel, John Knowles, Steve Wariner, and Jerry Reed.
its only just today that i know this guy and admits that he truly is gifted by God. Glory be to God and admiration to this guy given back to the One
