  • The meat sell by dates for the customers are always different than the actual sell by dates. The meat is usually good even if marked down.I always buy the marked down meats, take them home and clean them off and repackage them and i have never had a problem with them going bad when i do this. The only exception to this rule is fish.

  • @angelteets ~ Thank you for your kind and encouraging comments! We LOOK for those meats and rarely buy unless it is marked down for a quick sale. Thanks for the inside scoop on the 'Ad Day' Mark Down! Since each store in our area has a different Ad Day start date - now I know what days to hit the different stores - early! Thanks!

  • I have to tell you that I love your videos..so natural and so informative and you are funny in a simple way too..now i work in a meat room at a grocery store. The days most meat rooms mark down their items is the day of the new add..they mark down the meat from the previous add on this day and the next day they put the meat out for quick sale. The produce and bakery items are always being added to on a daily basis.thanks for the videos!

  • great video, thanks for sharing!

  • @dax3370 ~ That is so good to know! Glad you found them...AND they are so much more than a one time purchase...mint, basil and coriander can grow back each year (or even all year long) so it's a cheap gift that keeps on giving. Nothing is better than FRESH herbs..and those are often very pricey! Good find!!

Thanks for sharing your encouraging words!

    Blessings!

  • @dax3370 ~ Sorry so delayed in my reply! Oh I love that you've found those spots in your stores! It's like finding treasure, isn't it?

Thank you for watching and for your encouraging comment!

  • @dax3370 - Thanks!

It is so good to hear that you've found them!

Also in Walmarts (most anyway) there are often two or three rows set aside for Clearance items...usually toward the garden center.

    Thanks for your encouraging comment!

  • Good Tips! I know one store that carries sausages that I like and a day before the Best-before date they mark them down 30%. If I see any there I usually buy them all, cook one package that night and freeze the rest.

  • Though the information is good, I have to make one correction about a claim she made. There are never any color enhancing products used in or on meat. The color is natural and to add any thing to meat would actually land folks in jail. JUST FYI.

  • @Windsblow Actually, some establishments add carbon monoxide to meats, it keeps them really red for a really long time, even past the best-before date.

  • @69furball69 Local meat departments don't add anything for color. Some prepack meats like those sold at Wal-MArt are gas treated to inhibit bacteria growth.

  • If you hit the supermarket in the morning after they open the meat dept will go through and do their markdowns. Every store is different and the meat manager has a different time they go through, and different markdown percentages. Visit different stores and compare and it doesn't hurt to talk with the meat mgr.

  • @rick9565 - Yep, I've done that at some places - other stores don't have a 'time' or 'day' that is set, like this one...I asked and they had no real answer...so I just try to get there early hoping I'm the first one, but sometimes I even beat the markdown time!

  • I got a tip for you . : when you see something on sale and they dont have , still get a raincheck , even thoght you were not going to buy it then anyways, then you can get it when you need it on sale. it works best when meat is on sale because they cut off less fat when its on sale. so with a raincheck you can buy it when its cut up for top price and get less fat for less money ...lol

  • @ReUsedCorn - The raincheck is a great tip!!! I always seem to forget it Thanks for the mention!!

  • Heehee I thought I was bad. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I know that Winco is getting tired of me "stalking" the meat department on markdown day. Yep that lade walking in circles with an empty cart is me waiting for the meat markdowns. haha!

  • I WISH they had a 'set' time and date they did this so that I COULD stalk the meat and produce dept. I SO would! I've called and they don't so I have to hit and miss.

Still works out pretty good though.

Thanks for the smile (and a tad bit of envy for scheduled mark-down days) Haha.

    Best Blessings!

  • Here's what I do at Freddie's since they don't have a specific markdown day. I scope out the sell by date and if I happen to be around the store the day before or the day of the date I will stop in and check out the mark down area. It's a bet that I'll find something. I won't go out of my way though unless I really want something.

  • that was great advice for me thank u

  • Hi!

    Thanks for the comment!

Youtube didn't send me a notice that you had posted one! Sorry!

I hope you were able to use this idea in your area!

  • hey you know, I have looked around at a few vids here, it is often said that you should look for, collect, use coupons when shopping. We are a small country compared to some and have about three supermarket chains for the country. Pac an Sav, New World and Countdown. They used to do coupons. When they added up the cost of printing distribution of coupons etc they figured they would redivert those costs and just make the savings apply in general to the product. So no colleceting coupons here

  • Long ago (when a new wife) I used to collect coupons. Then when we changed eating habits to more basics over pre-made, I realized the coupons were for mostly processed food and name brand convenience foods full of junk.

So we still eat cheaper and it's also healthier. I've not used a coupon in years!

No one coupons produce here or even REAL food (milk etc.) just boxed big name junk we don't eat.

Twinkies on sale are still not worth the eating!

  • The chinese called the fruit a peach. It came to new Zealand and was exported as "kiwi fruit" for marketing purposes I think

  • Smart marketing then I suppose since I've never heard them called 'peaches' (o:

    Thanks!

  • I'm in New Zealand where - as you call them - kiwi's, we call them kiwi fruit, were created. They were originally a Chinese gooseberry and crossed with something, anyway, years ago there were so many of them in NZ people we knew in the industry were begging people to take them off their hands.

As to meat, in our shops when the date is due for expiry that is when the stores slap a reduced sale or bonus buy sticker on the label and so reduce the price for a quick sale. We dont have hidden places.

  • Hi!

Well, they do that too (sticker price it) but most placed I've shopped then MOVE the stuff to an obscure corner of the ilse. Who knows why...? So I always have to find the place they've moved stuff to since it's not actually WITH the real other items.

Now as to kiwi fruit....thanks for the info and history...I never knew that! Love learning new things about the origins of some foods! Thanks!

  • I use overripe leftover bananas in smoothies/milkshakes. Also try a cheap mocha...use leftover coffee, milk and chocolate syrup over ice...way cheaper than Starbucks and you don't have to waste gas going for it.

  • Oh yeah!

Saving that tid-bit of morning coffee in the fridge (glass jar) to mix with some of the ingredients you mentioned...and POOF a super cheap Starbucks stand in!

    Best Blessings!

  • Thanks! Next time I wont turn down those slightly brown bananas for 19¢ a pound. I can freeze 'em and use them for smoothies

  • What we do is cut them in half, skin them and freeze them on a cookie sheet, then when they are frozen through solid we put them in a baggie. When we are making a smoothie - the half comes out nice and solid/firm and just enough for one person's smoothy. 4 smoothies, 4 halves. It's great!

  • I have also found that where i am in central florida, i have ALOT of stores to choose from, too many in fact , so I figured out going to the stores that are the older stores or in the less popluar areas u get the same merch for WAY cheaper b/c MGRs offer MGR special pricing to move the product b/4 it spoils. Also Target offers ALOT of clearance items like laundry soap & ppr towels, weird!! U can find MANY deals at target where u least expect it.I bought 15 btls of 12$ lndry soap for $13!! woo!

  • Yep, you're right, shopping around and finding best bargains is helpful. Once you know the more stable stores for sales, you can stick with your favorites!

    Great Point!

  • Timing your trips to the grocery store is important too.

  • Very good point!

You can find out when most departments put out the 'sell quick' items and get a much better selection!

Ours does the meats at about 8AM on Weds and produce about 10AM same day.

Good point! Thanks for adding it!

    Best Blessings!

  • I♥ getting bargains like this! Great video...

my bargain bananas get peeled, put in a gallon ziplock bag into the freezer and use them in smoothies instead of ice cubes~ makes the smoothie more frosty !

  • We do the same! I have one bag of peeled bananas - one bag of bananas IN the peel (the ones we *thought* we'd get to in time but didn't!) using the peeled ones in smoothies like you - and theones in the peel thaw out great for banana nut muffins (I got a video on that too!)

Thanks for the nice comment and extra tip!

  • Another thing you can do is ask the person at the deli for 'ends' of things like the turkey or if you eat ham - and they usually sell them at a lower per pound price. You can cube them up and use them on salads and omolettes.

    Yep. KIWIS! Love 'em!!

I know I say 'my favorite' like a billion times in this video - but really - anything I like when I find it on sale - it IS my favorite! (o:

Kiwis win hands down all the time though. Hey - they freeze good for smoothies too! (o:

  • awesome video!

A gorcery store a bit away always has some good meat deals. Usuall, i can't afford steak UNLESS it is on clearance. But my nearest grocery store... i wonder if they even have a sales bin! Its all downtown so the store is a bit compact so i guess i'll look again.

Those kiwis are such a good deal. Over here i paid 99cents each! They are one of my luxury items. haha

  • izzyizod wrote: "Wow! Thanks. "

And somehow *I* hit 'remove' instead of 'reply'!!! ARG!!!

I was going to reply with:

"It's my pleasure to share and be of service" - but .... well.... I messed up and removed your comment!!! SORRY!!!

I need to go outside and get some fresh air!

    Donna

  • Thanks!

Some places to look are the end of the meat cooler, back by the produce stocking door, out of place cart in the wine area, and by the bathroom entrances (odd shelves or carts there). No signs saying what the 'display' is, but usually red, orange or yellow discount stickers over the old price of each item.

Heck yeah! I love my freezer! Even a tad bit of freezer 'burn' is livable when you pay very little! (o:

    Thanks for the encourgement!

    Best Blessinsg!

    Donna

  • Wow you really know how to get some really great deals! This is awesome information. I tried to do this already but wasn't sure where in the store to go to find these kinds of deals. Thank you! And thanks for another wonderful video. I really love watching! 5/5

According to my latest web search sometimes they use carbon monoxide to keep the meat red and I'm guessing it leaks out after a while so it really is no big deal when the meat is less red. Also thats what chest freezers are good for.
