I once worked as a bookmaker’s assistant in India, which was interesting because they allowed some poorer punters to bet their children as a stake. For example, if they lost then the kid would have to work for us for free for a couple of days. I remember one guy wanted to clear all his old debts with a huge bet but lost, so his 11YO daughter was taken away to the city (permanently, I believe).
It all worked well until some western do-gooder aid workers came and stopped us for no reason.
I met Hansie personally in 1998. Shame so much focus on him and match fixing. I guarantee that players from almost every nation are doing it do this day.
@sonofthedestroyer guarantee, thats a bold statement just because you had a close meeting with the man, anyway think what you want to think maybe you are like that also and thats what makes you say something like that.
the tragic story of a modern day great of cricket. he was the prototype of what a modern cricketer should be. the team which he led was my favorite ever, filled with amazing players. Virtually everyone could bat and bowl. moreover played their cricket in a decent manner, unlike aussies. i can only say that the world is an unfair place. the guy who admitted of wrongdoing (cronje) was banished from cricket while culprits who were caught (warne, waugh) are now considered legends. A SHAME
I got to know that he was dead, TODAY, AFTER 7 YEARS!!!
I'm so upset about his death!
He was a great man... a great captain... I think all these things are controlled by underground bookers... I believe that the acceptance of everything without rejection is also a part of it!!!!
I'm a buddhist and cheating is a bad thing according to my religion. But, my heart says, he is a great man! He was... May he find the path to nibbhana!
i am not south african, and i love cricket. and i know what hansie and others did (and some perhaps still do) was wrong. but i think he paid too hefty a price. i wish he had made better choices. cricket is forever poorer without him. RIP.

You're obviously a Saffer in denial, mate. Cronje was a dirty, greedy bastard and was probably killed by the SA security services. 71 or 72 illegal overseas accounts - this goes a lot deeper than the thrown Amarnath testimonial. You can pretty much guarantee he'd been throwing matches since getting the captaincy in 1994.
A disgrace to cricket and a disgrace to South Africa, yet he still gets voted as the 11th most influential South African of all time.
Ya bru congrats you can read! He will always be HANSIE and an ICON in S.A history!! He brought the proteas to number 1 in the world! did you forget to read that!?!? so POM you got no say on wat he did and he was actually man enough to admit wen he was wrong and he never match fixed!! Maybe england should try win a test once in a while!
Man enough to admit when he was wrong?? What is with South Africans - you probably voted Verwoerd or Terreblanche as the most influential South African of all time. Take a day off on the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre, do you?
Still miss Hansie,to hell with the BBC for making this documentary, what about other players of other countries who were involved in matching that still carries on today...pathetic! R.I.P. Hansie Wessel Cronje!!!British bullshit video...no respect for the dead and his family...wankers!!
Hansie's is a more tragic story primarily because of his death and the dizzying heights to which he'd led the South African squad. He was heralded as the best captain of his time. It's tragic what happened and as an Indian fan of his, I was shocked and stunned that someone like him would be involved. I didn't care about Indian players like Mongia, Azhar, or Jadeja who were involved too, but I held Hansie on a much higher pedestal. To see him fall like that, was very tragic.

@sonofthedestroyer BCCI saved the Indian players from the scandal. I am sure BCCI also gets a cut in these transactions.

At least he confessed. I agree with you that match fixing must be prevalent today as well, to a wider degree mainly due to the crap 2020 cricket.

+ ruining world cricket is ruining world cricket + we can blame the pakistanis, indians + south africans for doing that
just for a quick buck
warnie + junior never interfered with a cricket match unlike rats like cronje, malik, azharuddin, gibbs + the bookmakers
desperadonige 2 years ago
piss off idiot
they didnt fix the matches + when they were asked 2 they reported it to AB + their manager
they only gave information that otherwise wasnt available which im sure most cricketers would do

Haha, I just checked. Verwoerd at 19 and Terreblanche at 25 in the poll that voted Cronje at 11. Good work!
