@laoshu505000 Philadelphia US. heading to taiwan in may to teach english. im also a language fanatic but i tend to take things one at a time. i did german first, was forced to do french, and im now doing chinese, but im going to move to another language in about a year. dont know what yet. 我看到你別的中文頻道了。你還在台灣嗎?
i watch ur vids from time to time and am simply am amazed at ur talent
recently i've started the interest of learning taiwanese, as all my relatives speak it, and it's just fun to learn. But I feel like there isn't a good dictionary for someone who's chinese isn't that good online. any english/taiwanese dictionary resources out there on the net u know of?
@bluninjadragon I don't really know of any good places to find good Taiwanese dictionaries. Since my wife is from Taiwan, I'm able to ask her a lot of things. If you ever come across any good dictionaries, please let me know.
I speak some Taiwanese because my grandmother speaks it. My Taiwanese isn't that good though because I'm from the United States. I can understand your Taiwanese. How did you learn Taiwanese?
you are really talent on language, honestly, your Taiwanese is way much better than mine, how did you learn that from? your wife? hope you enjoy the beef stew noodle in Taiwan.
OK, first thing's first, I am not from Taiwan.. I live in the States, dummy.
Everyone is probably recognizing the PRC as CHINA now, but man.. You cannot order those Taiwanese/China to give up their basic Republic-status and democracy, command your terrible enmity against the politics of the Taiwanese people, or even you cannot blabber out loud that there is no such thing as the ROC anymore.. Leave Taiwan alone, mind your own crazy business, or at least keep your stupid mouth shut!
You should learn Singapore Hokkien. Much much easier. Singapoer Hokkien (Straits Hokkien) is nothing like traditional Hokkien (Taiwanese). Ours is a mix of Hokkien, Malay, Tamil and various languages...
@bctvanw NO! SINGAPORE! SINGAPORE IS NOT JAPANESE, or NATIVE FORMASAN! Singapore, Southeast Asia, South of Johor Baru, Malaysia. Tip of the Malay Peninsula... In Singapore, there are Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hainanese, Hakka. These are the majority of Chinese in Singapore. All the Chinese dialects spoken in Singapore and Malaysia are mixed with Malay or Tamil. For example - 我要结婚了 becomes "Gua ai KAWIN liao" Kawin - Malay for Marriage. 我刚回来 becomes "Gua baru deng lai" Baru - just/new...
I meant "Taiwanese"... not Singaporean. You misundertood my post.
btw. Eyes in Formosan=mata...same as in Malay.
Taiwanese is related to many SEA countries. Take Philiphines for example. It was first colonized by Spanish(same as Taiwan). Many native Filipinos are related to native Taiwanese/Formosans. New Chinese immegrants of Philiphines and Taiwan were mostly from Guangdong/Canton or Fujian/Hokkian of China.
Same story applies to Malaysia/Singapore(dif: Dutch)
Thanks a lot man ! I'm doing immersion in Germany at the moment as well, so I was just thinking if you were supplementing your immersion with other materials as well. :) I guess we're doing it the same way then, speaking all day every day as much as possible.
Yea, and make as many videos as you can while you're there. I would also suggest reading things at the same time. I can't do this with Taiwanese because there isn't really a written language. I just have to use it as much as I can
Yeah I'm going to school here so I'm also in contact with the written language. I haven't really dived into the literature yet, for some reason I seem to find the everyday spoken language more interesting and somehow I regard them as two separate "entities", so to speak.
aww I'm so jealous. i can only manage to remember a word or two a week. hopefully I can eventually learn it properly and be able to chat with my relatives :)
@codygreaver92 i went to school with a bunch of people, and they all like knew the language fluently when they were kids, and forgot it, and had no intentions of learning it, i offered to teach them, and they just rejected,, one girls dad i knew, spoke perfect german, and english, mixed it up in school, and was asked to speak english at home with his parents, spoke only that, and he relearned german, but cant speak it as well as he could when he was a kid,
@codygreaver92 if i ever have children, i~m going to speak a foreign langauge to them, and try to teach them lots of languages when they~re kids, and marry a foreign woman, and have her speak her language, so my children can be polyglots, unfortunately for me, my family is completely american, and both my mother, and fathers sides' families have been in the states since the 19th centuries
yeah same, but i mean, if like, a couple from lets say Turkey came here, and just taught their kids English, i think it would be a waste, they should teach there children there mother tongue you know, i hope to mary a foreign girl to :D
Unfortunately we speak a mixture of Mandarin and English.
And the longer I live here in America, greater the ratio of English I use :/ Though when I became aware of that I've been trying to reverse the trend.
I understand what you mean. It's very difficult to keep up with the language living in a different environment. It's amazing how much one can learn/understand in just a few days of being in the actual country. You get to hea/ruse it everyday. I wish I could stay here longer.

Taiwan has 70% Hokkien,is only has 15% Han madarin, but Madarin is official language of Taiwan. It unfair for Taiwanese hokkien.
I think you are Han madarin,so you don't understand think of all Taiwanese.

Wow, my mother tongue! Remember to watch out for the three way distinction and tone sandhi, wish you have fun learning it :)
And I noticed you use some Mandarin pronunciation (and phrasing, but thats quite complicated)
such as :
Character - Mandarin (Taiwan ver) - Taiwanese (sandhi'ed)
台灣 - /t_hai_R.wan_H/ - /tai_M.wan_R/
語法 - /y_R.fa_L/ - /gu_H.hwa(_X)t_}(_M)/

How am I nuts? don't you want your own country? go oversea, there is no ROC.
You are denying, face the true that there is no ROC! the term free china was used back in 1950, buddy, wake up! it is 2010!

@Waenom
Maybe you should learn more about TW.
When ROC was created in 1912, TW was a Japanese colony. ROC came to TW in 1949, and Japan officially signed a treaty to give up TW in 1951.
KMT brought ROC and 2 millions Chinese refugees to Taiwan, but they only compose less than 15% of Taiwan's population.
Do you really think they represent Taiwan? I think you think this way because of the cold war propaganda.
It is more complicated than you think.
