He always held back in his sparring sessions and would lean back on the ropes to let his sparring partners slug away at him. In the long run in probably ended up messing up his health but it helped him with his chin during his career, after all he was never Knocked out in his entire career(his only stoppage was a corner stoppage).

Well, he did better against Berbick then he did against Holmes. Still, it was sad to watch the ending of a once superior athlete without equal in the ring. Ali should have never fought after Holmes. Fuck he shouldn't have even fought Holmes!!! Ali had all the signs in 1978 of a fighter on the downhill..After Holmes he shouldn't have fought again. Shame on his camp and people for pushing him along. The only reason they had this fight in the Bahamas is because Ali failed medical tests in the states, failed the sparring tests, and couldn't get a U.S. License. Very Sad

KLitschko proved his heart vs Lewis. Klitschko has never been behind on the cards at the end of a fight. Klitschko would have destroyed Foreman and Frazier easier than Ali. Anyone who stands in front of Klitschko is getting hit, hurt and messed up.

I agree with jack, he should have not even qualified for a license. They gave him one intentionally because they knew he was getting sick, they knew he couldnt perform the way he used too. They wanted to see him defeated. Thats why they let him fight larry holmes. Thats why they let him fight trevor berbick. Listen to the commentary about his weight, body, speech, skills, etc. They wanted this. They knew he couldnt lose weight. It was done with bad intentions by anti-ali people running boxing.

I hear all of you. Yes ali was a womanizer, but as great as he was in the ring, he wasnt a perfect person, even though he was a worldly giant. None of us are perfect, and we all have faults, womanizing happened to be his. As far as the fights, he should have quit after manila. He fought 5 more yrs after that. I dont count berbick and holmes because he was greatly over the hill, and had been out for 2 yrs. We all get old and slower, ali is human, what did the boxing world expect?

Ali has reached mythic status now mostly because the rabidly liberal press loves his anti Vietnam stance. The reality is that he practically invented the trash talking that infect pro sports now. Ali couldn't just beat his opponents he had to humiliate them in public. He made repeated racist remarks about Frazier. He also said on many occasions that he was god. Well I believe God didn't take kindly to that and as a result he shut Ali's big mouth.

The look in Ali's face when the guy announces his weight is so sad... he kind of looks at his chest and thinks "Once, it was perfect. Now, it is flabby and awful. Oh, I am done. " Still, he fought it out!`A`true champ. if he were in good shape, say 210 pounds, and 5 years younger, healthy, hed mop the floor with Trevor in about 3 rounds. No disrespect intended to Berbick. He had GREAT HEART AND COURAGE in getting up after getting hammered down by Tyson.

Well, he did better against Berbick then he did against Holmes. Still, it was sad to watch the ending of a once superior athlete without equal in the ring. A once sculpted body now flabby, Ali tried hard and did look good at times, but Berbick did win the fight fair and square. Thanks Champ for the memories, you were the best of all times.

This is a humbling reminder that every great fighter grows old. Even Ali, though I highly respected his career, needed to feel defeat and now came full circle. Of course, he has continued to be a charitable person in his life.

I also remember reading about how when Ali was youger there was this ex-fighter kind of bragging on something, but the guy was punch drunk and he was trying to get Ali to agree with him on something but Ali would not look into his eyes because a fighter never looks into the eyes of ex fighters like that cause they might see their future.Looking now I see why but back then I remember thinking Ali would never end up like that guy.

I remember as a kid thinking that Ali would never end up like Joe Louis, etc. He was just too smart. I assumed incorrectly that he'd know when to quit. This is very sad.
