I clicked it thinking it was going to be one of those videos where the person is overwhelmed and doesn't quite know what to do with something quite that big, but I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. Sarcasm aside, this short demo is one of my favorite things and I've played it over and over. Your string muting is great, and really emphasizes passages like at 1:26, which feel really open and spacey.

@jdmimport13 It really just depends on what I'm playing, I don't know what it is that makes me play one way instead of the other sometimes. It wasn't always that way, I used to only play open handed, but then pushed myself to play close hand for a long time, and now I just do both at varying times.

@aleksandersucharski You still do, because it provides a tone that is significantly different from a guitar, and really fills out the tone. You can hear it in many meshuggah songs, where the guitar is playing, and the real "meshuggah" sound comes in when the bass drops in.

I do listen to bands such as Meshuggah, Deftones, After the Burial, etc. that use 8 strings, but do you think the low F# is really necessary?

@rhguitar91 Actually, yes. In this video, Pete's guitar (8 string) is tuned to E A E A D G B E, and he never hits his low E string. I've been doing a lot of work with a 7 string myself, and hope to have some videos up soon, and I can tell you that this will be one of the first songs that I cover.
