I train in Southern Mantis Kung Fu and we do a similar sort of drill to train sensitivity and flow. This is one of those typical drills that when you see someone like yourself do it, it looks so easy but is actually extraordinarily involved. It's also a lot of fun and very satisfying once you have the hang of it. And I agree 100%, you'll learn a lot more from this 'patty cake' exercise in a week than you would learn in a year hitting a bag as hard as you can. Good stuff!
I love HUBUD. Its a great drill and a great way to warm up before a workout. Good video...Nice rebuttals to some of the negative comments about your video.
Hey, your vids are great! You have some of the most educational videos on the net, regardless of what the tards are saying! Keep it up, I look forward to more, and maybe working out with you guys someday...
My Sensei and I work this drill occasionally in class. It's one of my favorites! We always start right to right, but I always have difficulty switching to the left mid drill. I need to keep practicing! Your video is informative! great job!
This is a good video. I teach Hubud with Kenpo techniques but I do it slightly different. It was good to see another perspective on this type of training.
Many people underestimate the time it takes to flow smoothly, but I believe it is time well invested.
Again, thank you for posting this video and good luck in your training.
good demo, I studied Kenpo Karate , and my teacher who was a 4th degree black belt, also became a fully certfied Kali instructor under one of Dan Inosantos students, i was amazed at how these arts blended.
Nice video and good explanation. I used to do Hubud drills with my Kenpo instructor about 10 years ago. I haven't worked out in years and am looking forward to getting back into it.
love to see JKD philosophies in action. Sensitivity drills are an essential part of learning the "go" part of the techniques as opposed to the "show". Thanks for sharing your knowledge
I've always appreciated the idea of learning the techniques and then, once accomplished, realizing that there are no techniques... simply combat! You are very quick and fluid with your "kenpo silat"!
Outstanding demonstration. Very relaxed and fluid and some interesting things to try out that I hadn't taken into consideration. Thanks for posting. Peace.
Thanks for the comment. Next time I'll make sure I knock out my training partner while I'm attempting to demonstrate a flow drill to new students to the arts. Yeah, good idea.
@CounterforCounter Lol, he is probably a brand new MMA guy, who thinks if you aren't banging away at a Muay Thai bag you not doing anything. Since he has never been in a real fight, and has never considered that a man might have a knife so he can't see the importance of flow and sensitivity. Oh well.
Oh god.. I'm goin to post this message to every vid that doenst pronounce the word 'hubad' correctly. I get to be picky since filipino anyways. Keep the 'hu' part short with more emphasis on the 'bad' part pronounced as bud like in rose'bud'.
Cool, I'll make a note and make sure all of the 1,000 different dialects pronounce it exactly like you do! Thanks again. Also, I plan on posting a comment on every comment that has grammar mistakes. You spelled the word doesn't incorrectly. Also, you should capitalize the F in Filipino. You are also missing the word I'm in your sentence that declares you are Filipino. Don't worry about it though, not a big deal buddy! Thanks for the positive comment.
with all due respect, mispronouncing the word Hubad (Tagalog for 'naked') makes Filipinos cringe. conceptually Hubad drills practice hand technique minus weaponry. i'm glad you are willing to correct the pronunciation. if you are featuring FMA, you will agree that on a fundamental level, this is the correct thing to do.
BTW, please keep up the good work. conceptually, very good stuff.
This is great. I've seen a fair amount of bullshido but you guys hit the mark on how different drills from other arts can be used to enhance yours. I also like how you focus on developing the attributes to use the techniques and not just "these are Kenpo techniques". Great work!
Excellent video. I am a Krav Maga instructor but also an old time black belt in karate. Love FMA. No local instructors. I love the sticking arts but find it hard to make new students appreciate the sensitivity and touch. Loved it.
great video ,very informative,i think it was good the way you started of slow considering this is a sensetivity drill ,most on here are to exspolosive from the start and very sloppy with little or no appreciation for the drill as a whole ..oh yeah also with crappy music over the top.....good work guys .......book marked for later viewing...
Very good use of FMA concept. I am study JKD Concepts and Kali (Inosanto Blend). I use hubud much in the same way to make FMA Concepts more accessible to other martial artists by incorporating techniques from their systems into the drill culminating typically in a myriad of off the cuff lock flows. People who think they are highly skilled are humbled when they realize that they can not flow from techniques while in motion, typically because of the mentality of the static self defense training.
They are not sparring of demonstrating one technique. It is not a matter of Working against this or that type of fighter of attack. Hubud is a movement drill, the type of attack (punch, hammer fist, finger jab, etc.) is not important, it is the angle of the attack, the flow, and incorporating counter strikes or other techniques while in motion. This will improve timing, spacial relations and coordination.
Check out the functional five swords videos. There are 3 of them and in those we show how to enter against a boxer's jab and cross. Thanks for watching.
very nice flow. I am going to watch it over and over again. There are lots of little nuggets for me to pick up
