Blacks make up 13% of the population, yet, commit the most crimes. I am sure you see it in your community as well. Stop acting like blacks are so innocent.

Actually, I have a good friend named Keion (who is black) and gets stopped WAY less than me... oh yeah, I live in a neighborhood that is over 90% black and ALL the city cops who hassle me are black... well most of the cops around here are black ANYWAY. One white deputy got in my face at Walmart but I educated him and we parted friends. I dress and act like the professional I am. Many people assume I am a detective except the cops who harass me because I answer "No" to "are you a cop?"

Excellent information. Only one thing to add. I understand that non-whites and young people often get more attention than others but this goes a little deeper. As a person that openly carries firearms every day, I experience the same sort of ID demands that are unconstitutional and illegal. And I am a white male professional, supposedly immune to this mistreatment according to Ed. Ed, ALL Americans can be subjected to rights violations by not submitting and fitting in, the expansion of tyranny.

We're facing a similar problem over here in the UK. The Govmnt is tryin to bring in a law that states that you have to have ID. Not just any ID, but ID issued by them. Basically and ID card with your DNA on it as well as your photo. the people are fighting, but I fear we will lose. I can see us having the same issues that you have been through. I can also see it been used for "ethnic" profiling

The cop has NO RIGHT to do any of that. He will do it, however. A cop may have a right to ask you questions. A citizen has no duty to answer. Remain silent. That will get a cop going pretty quick. Mention your rights. Mention the U.S. Constitution. The Bill of Rights. Your right to remain silent. Stay quiet. Don't give him your I.D. when demanded. All these will drive a cop nuts. Cops often go way out of control and ruff up citizens. Be careful you are not shot. Cops have guns in the U.S.A.

What was your opinion of that law (ordinance?) in Chicago that allowed cops to go around and break up any group of more than two (?) people standing on a street corner? It was supposed to be about gangs, but ignorant cops were harrassing anyone standing around talking to their friends. It's obviously wrong and unjust (freedom to peaceably assemble??), and I never heard whether that was repealed or not.

i totally agree our government can be very self conscientious and obsessed with unnecessary safety. its like banning spark plugs because it COULD hurt someone. But me and my friends hang out on street corners all the time and i see ppl staring at us out of their cars like we're doing something wrong.

Yep. The California ID. law  - cops stopping Americans and asking for I.D. - was ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1983. Point of aimless driving around: the camera guy wanted to see some motion through the front windshield. The street lighting looked pretty good in Beverly Hills, California.
