I like extended cause its better than extended cause everyone net decks standard now, I love playing fae, jund and other decks from previous seasons of standard
I would play extended if it had the chance to play with my Dralnu/Teferi deck with some goodness of the past before that deck was ever birthed. so yeah, come on Overextended, lets see Valakut vs Dragon storm, would be a killer match up.
@jwmints I was going to suggest the same thing. Extended would function as a completely seperate beast if standard sets were exchanged for older sets. Personally, I would love to play with one core block - preferably M10 - and from Odyssey to Shards expansion blocks as there'd be so much more variety available - of course bans should be enforced to stop it being a one or two deck game like it was with Affinity and currently is with Jund and Faeries.
I have absolutely no interest in Extended. TSG really laid out a lot of the reasons why: "So, it's all of the things you didn't like from previous Standards, all at once?"
I would have liked Double Extended, mainly because I'd like something similar to Legacy (where I can play a lot of crazy decks built of my old cards) without it being as blisteringly expensive as Legacy (Underground Sea WHYYYYYY).
I am a draft/legacy dude. I've always just thought extended was worse than Legacy, and wondered why people were interested in the first place. Also, simply drafting, and then trading "back" standard staples has made getting expensive old cards quite easy. Just crack packs at the prerelease, sell the overpriced cards, and buy a dual. (Exp: traded Baneslayer, Gideon, and $8 for an underground sea at the Rise prelease)
I think the solution for Extended is very simple... Make it Mirrodin/Xth Ed. - Now, without rotations It's like Legacy but without most of the banned cards, but a vast variety of fantastic mechanics, well written cards, all without the sacrifice of huge possibilities
extended needs more extension. the ocean is calm, the size of the boat matters here.
p.s. another reason for killing extended is card value. wizards pulled the rug out from under us. reextend it and release some dual decks w/ a large emphasis in extended cards to reintroduce some of the card mechanics.
i used to love ext and hate std, but luis is right-now i play std/legacy :-/
This may seem like a silly idea, but worth a shot. How about Extended = Four old sets (i.e. Mirrodin thru Time Spiral) plus current Core Set and Expansion. So currently extended would be: Mirrodin Kamigawa Ravnica Time Spiral M11 Scars of Mirrodin Next Year Extended: Kamigawa Ravnica Time Spiral Lorwyn M12 Innistrad Seems kind of complicated but keeps the best of both worlds. Really you need more 3rd party tournament support too. :o\
I remember when I first started playing, Tempest was Extended-legal, and when I was most interested in Extended, it was the 3-year period in which Invasion was the oldest set. Invasion Block, Odyssey, Onslaught, Mirrodin, Kamigawa, Ravnica, Coldsnap, Time Spiral. The format was huge. It felt a lot like Legacy. There was Zoo, Ichorid/Dredge, Next Level Blue/Countertop, earlier there was No-stick, TEPS, Affinity, even Enduring Ideal. These were fun decks neither Legacy nor Standard (save affinity)
I think that extended needs more cards in the card pool because right now WTOC is merging probably 2-3 most hated deck ever into 1 format. If you own one of those deck ofc you will like the format but if you don't want to play faery, jund, or control than why should you even go to these event and lose?
Extended really needs about 6-7 years worth of cards to be relevant again. Think of how different it would be if even just Time Spiral and Ravnica blocks were included. My first PTQ was Extended before the rules change and it was a whole different ballgame from Standard. The only problem is, the recent growth of Legacy is due to the decline of Extended. It really just boils down to figuring out what share of popularity we want between Extended and Legacy.
solution: get rid of the RESERVED LIST. get rid of EXTENDED. Constructed Formats =Standard and Legacy (with all sorts of reprints including dual lands).
Note: I own complete playsets of all the duals and most legacy staple AND don't care if my legacy cards drop in price - as long as I can play with them on a regular basis. this is supposed to be a game. come on, wizards!
I think the biggest problem with Extended is that it's the middle format. If it gets too small, it's basically Standard. If it gets to large, it's a watered down Legacy. Neither is really enticing to play in since, in the end, it's the exact same decks you've already been seeing. I'm not sure what solution would be, maybe have random blocks? Odyssey, Ravnica, Zendikar for example. Though that seems confusing, albeit fun.
I think it should be Mirrodin forward since it takes away a lot of older and powerful cards but it keeps the newer ones since with the new block I think Myr deck could be possible with some of the older cards and with cards that aren't in extended anymore because of the change, infect could be a lot better and potentially viable.
I'm stealing this idea, but an interesting thought would be making Extended Masques forward. It would be somewhat similar to legacy without the broken pre-Masques stuff or the price barriers. You'd have to ban Skullclamp, and probably Dark Ritual/Brainstorm, but beyond that I don't think anything else would be obscene, and it would be a hugely diverse format.
What about extended being the #2-4 or 5 most recent blocks and the #2-3 or 4 most recent core sets, excluding the most recent Core Set and block. So right now; M10,. 10th and maybe 9th ed, Zendikar, Alara, Lorewyn / Shadowmoor, Time Spiral and maybe Ravnica blocks, but WITHOUT Scars and M11. It would still have the yesterday's standard feel, but wont be plagued by the current standard decks.
I think that Extended should be changed to "Make your own Standard". Each player can choose two Blocks and add the current Basic set. That would be fun to me.
Good show, but you guys repeated yourselves a lot this week. I feel like the show's content could have been finished in less than 8-10 minutes. Keep up the good work though.
@triggern7x Your suggestion is not crazy at all. I agree with you: they should rotate it back to Ravnica, at least, ban a few cards and that's it. Extended is like the baby of Legacy and Vintage, so it is natural for that format to have its own banned list.
I think an interesting format would be one that rotates in such a way that it encompasses half of the current number of blocks. So, it is always the newest half of the released blocks.
Wizards really just needs to make "over-extended", Mercadian Masques forward. It would cut the overly expensive legacy staples like duals, lackeys, forces, all the annoying things, while still allowing people to play most of their favorite decks.
That and the fact that it would have a finite beginning at M.M. would mean that cards wouldn't rotate.
The format needs a similar level of support to standard (FNMs etc)
OR
They need to change the format to make it different again. I still like the idea of Mirage to the current set. It will have a lot of the diversity of Legacy and be cheaper to get the cards for.
Unfortunately, I don't see wizards doing the second one and it might take them a while to wake up with the first one.
Why don't they just kill extended, make Standard and Limited the premiere PTQ/PT formats and let legacy be the premiere format for "casual" competative play?
The only difference killing extended would make for the community is to stop giving PTQ-grinders a very good EV format to grind in. Nobody would care, and magic would keep on as it is.
I'd like to see an overextended format but not from Masques onwards: Rishadan port would be a nightmare both financially and in terms of play. I'd say Invasion or maybe Onslaught would be a good starting poing. Btw, I have a large Legacy collection and I don't think OE would necessarilly be a problem for that eternal format.
Not that it's the solution to Extended, but give us Over-Extended and kill current Extended if nothing else. This wouldn't actually solve the problem with current Extended, but I know I would like Over-Extended. It could bridge the gap between Legacy and Extended/Standard as well. People will clearly be shortly out-priced in Legacy, so that format isn't the answer. Current Extended is boring and dominated by decks that people don't like or really enjoy playing that much. Give us Over-Extended!
Wizards used to print more cards that could go in a variety of decks, now they just print archetypes. Extended used to bring about new interactions that you never got to see in type 2. Now it brings you all the thrills of adding cryptic command & Vendilion Clique to your cawblade deck. It's just not as exciting as tempest-x or even masquerades -x.
Then again after every rotation things used to thin out. Now that all the broken decks are gone they should add a few years to each rotation.
I think the issue is that, especially with only 4 blocks now, the sets are too self-contained for anyone to chop and change from "what standard was" (i.e. Jund, Faeries). The themes prevalent in each block (tribal, landfall, etc.) are simply too cohesive and synergistic to overcome with "a whole new deck" - instead, people are just playing "Faeries splashing a few key spells". They don't print cards for extended, they print them for standard. Extended just plays past-standard's offcuts.
I think ext should be all the cards since the updated border change, which I believe was mirrodin, with a banned list of course. Being a more casual legacy sorta.

ITT nubs who don't understand that they're neglecting playlists and putting the videos out of order intentionally to garner more views on their own site.
I like Extended quite a bit, but I gotta say I think the biggest problem was the 7 to 4 year change they made. I still think something like pick your own blocks would be cool. Basically it would be any 4 blocks that have been in extended over the last 4-5 years would be eligible. Just a thought
They need to change it to OverExtended to actually get people to play it more. The only problem with that is that it might kill Legacy and they don't want to chance it.
I'd love to see them get rid of extended. Extended is as LSV pointed out basically the trolliest Standard decks of the past few formats (Faeries and Jund as the worst offenders), which are the reasons I didn't play Standard when they were legal. Standard is now basically Jace or ways to beat him, which is comparably miserable since I don't have inf $ for Jaces. That leaves me one PTQ per year that I can compete in, so if I open a shit pool I'm fucked until next year. Awesome proposition WOTC.
The nice thing about the old extended is that there was more of a balance between aggro, combo and control. In standard now there is mostly aggro and control. Which is just the same in the new extended. It was great finding out about a new combo that no one had thought of when a new set came out, and the chances of that happening with the new extended are nil. So it all goes to legacy and then what is the point of having extended at all?
I think part of the problem is that people know how two blocks interact with one another like Zendikar and Scars mixing them together doesn’t cause people to have to think differently than standard. upgrading a removal spell but for the most part the decks are the same It would be more interesting if we had Alara and scars only. or maybe alternating sets like Besiege, Rise, Zendikar, Conflux and m11. Would it feel like a standard? no I mean Rise and Zendikar have never been without World wake
They never should've shortened the extended rotation. I will never play another extended event. Wizards lost my faith when they shortened the extended rotation. Even if they do move it back I still won't attend. I will continue to play only standard and limited where it used to be more extended and limited.
I wouldn't say 95% of people play either Standard or Legacy. I think you're leaving out EDH, which is still probably played twice as much as Extended. so like 10% of the field...
It's really the block of Alara. It had a great slow format for standard but extended it is just a blank. Extended also had the taste of combos that were made with 3 years between them. Combo was the thing that really made extended, and Wizards have had the vibe of removing combo. I'm preferring new extended because I don't have cards before Shadowmoor, but the recent sets are not giving the fun combo but over kill as shown with standards' Caw-go, Valakut, which Valakut could just play block.
I want to know if this has happened once before in Magic's history. If so, Wizards needs to learn from their mistakes and make sure the next extended format is similar to the ones of previous extended formats. Personally, the extended format that Ravinica was in sounds like a good blue pring to work from
I like how you seem to think everyone plays online. Some people will actually leave the house and play against people. All I hear on this is "online this" "online that"
IMO Exteneded is much better than Standard as of right now. It has two of my favorite standard blocks: Lorewyn and Alara block. Along with the two current standard blocks. Standard right now is very bland, with nothing but Caw-Blade and then some. Bleh.
I think one thing that was wrong with extended is the new set size. TSP ext was sick when we were helping friends test, but only the pros had a chance to play it. TSP was a huge set and allowed for a lot of interaction, 4 blocks but small set size is the issue i think
@donotfeedthetroll dude it takes time for the load the thing even if there are multiple loaders going at it at the same time. If you have tried to upload videos all at the same time there are some that are going to load faster than others. On top of that some of them will jam and fail to upload at times. So ya.
@donotfeedthetroll If you check out their website they put them in a nice scrolling playlist, that is in order, that you can access all from one video.

they should make it so that the standard sets arent included in the extended sets.
i.e. something like the 4 sets before the current 2 sets, so right now it would be m10 to ravinica.
this way it ll be impossible for extended to be similar to standard, since its has none of the cards in standard

I'm fairly sure the reason their videos are no longer ordered is because they're trying to get everyone to go to their site and watch the videos.

I like to make extended as it is into the new standard. More diversity and no ambiguity between the two formats where its at now

The solution to helping extended is either 1 of 2 things...
1... Get rid of it all together
or
2... Tell wizards to stop having new idea's for it.
mikeyk159 11 months ago
I wouldn't say 95% of people play either Standard or Legacy. I think you're leaving out EDH, which is still probably played twice as much as Extended. so like 10% of the field...
Love the show

Guys, why are you talking about this instead of the cost of basic land? Nah, I'm just kidding, keep up the good work.

Bleh.
AlexStrife89 11 months ago
@AlexStrife89 Extended is overshadowed by the Lorwyn block. Standard actually has a plethora of decks running around that all see top-level play.

I think LSV should do some pauper videos. I wanna see some cloudpost beatdowns

I think one thing that was wrong with extended is the new set size. TSP ext was sick when we were helping friends test, but only the pros had a chance to play it. TSP was a huge set and allowed for a lot of interaction, 4 blocks but small set size is the issue i think

I think they should drop Extended, and bring back Block for PTQ's
Bigfatasianguy 11 months ago
Yes please order your uploads please, and you know add all the videos as opposed to random draft matches with out the initial drafting phase!

good show but PLEASE START UPLOADING DRAFTS IN ORDER OR IN PLAYLISTS
donotfeedthetroll 11 months ago 173
@donotfeedthetroll dude it takes time for the load the thing even if there are multiple loaders going at it at the same time. If you have tried to upload videos all at the same time there are some that are going to load faster than others. On top of that some of them will jam and fail to upload at times. So ya.
mercenarybdu 11 months ago
@donotfeedthetroll If you check out their website they put them in a nice scrolling playlist, that is in order, that you can access all from one video.
faisjdas 11 months ago
@faisjdas this is true, but the quality is painfully bad. they are near unwatchable
ed88455 11 months ago
@donotfeedthetroll I second the playlist option. there's been a draft up for days and no draft video of it.
