  • I'm a little too old to remember this from Junior school, but the 80's and early 90's version of events was pretty much the same as I remember, no doubt. The TV on wheels was usually inside a cabinet type thing that, when the doors were opened, there was folded flaps which opened out in order to prevent light from the windows/ceiling from reflecting off the screen. I'm sure there used to be a company, somewhere, who made these TVs exclusively for schools as you never ever saw them anywhere else!

  • I cam remember the teacher fast forwarding the ident and me getting a bollocking for stopping it with my tv remote watch. Back in the day eh?

  • THis is from 14th September 1987

  • This video is actually the first ever showing of the new look on 14/9/87. & also, fact fans, before the ident there were some 4tel pages and a couple of minutes of black. There's an art to the building of suspense, as one C4 announcer once said.

  • Watching this brought A Lot of memories back... innocent, happy times :)

  • better than normal lessons

  • In school, we never watched this when it was being broadcasted - they would've been recorded on video for us to watch - and watching a video for us was rare cos we were in a school where there was only one tv for the whole of junior school

  • ahh!!! this takes me back to my primary school days and going down to the tv room to watch schools programmes on either the bbc or itv schools on ch4!!! i just wish that more people would upload more bbc and itv schools on ch4 full length programmes so that people who grew up in the 80's and 90's can watch them and relive their childhood!!! does anyone know where abouts online i'll be able to watch full length 80's bbc and itv schools on ch4 progammes? as i have been dying to watch them!

  • Memories of the rare times I was off sick from school and would have to sit and watch this the entire morning! My favourite programmes on ITV Schools on 4 were Scientfic Eye,Stop Look Listen and I.T.-if anyone has any videos of any of those I would love to see them posted on here! Strangely like some others those logos did creep me out as a kid!

  • OOHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHH takes me back to primary school it got that bad most of us knew this tune we would sing along to it. the excitement of knowing a programme was gonna start was mental and thinking " im at school but im watching TV??? what a doss this is" if your watching this then maybe you will want to find the programme "through the dragons eye" epic days truly epic days

  • Sorry, I have been informed that when the clock somes up, the music was called "Just A Minute", and not "A Minute To Go" :)

  • I remember when our class used to have television time at primary school. The TV was on a wheel stand, behind two doors, and was a big Bush thing, and the VCR was locked in a cabinet, and the picture on the screen, well very bad tracking, and poor colour in the background, but the sound that I am hearing now, that always stuck in my head, especially "A Minute To Go" You will never get anything like this again, EVER.

  • Was this on in the early 90s as well?

  • yes.

  • school tv programmes education at its best ! used to watch this as kid at school waiting for educational tv to start !

  • wow, you really can find anything on youtube! Like many have said, a huge thank you to the person responsible for uploading this. Instant childhood memories of being home ill, laid on the couch watching on a tiny portable 14 inch tv with indoor aerial, trying to find a scrap of spare video tape to record the roto and clock, using an old top loading ferguson VCR with the wired remote control! God how i miss the 80's!!!

  • God, now I do feel old, I'm turning 30 next year, but these were great days, lol :)

  • @crownvic71 LMAO we used to have one of those videos, we rented ours from Radio Rentals !! LOL

  • Money as a guess. and demand for 24hour TV put a stop to all the intermissions, there was no longer a need to fill air time for scheduling. If people actually went to bed instead of staying up all night watching TV then maybe this stuff would come back :D lol

  • Awesome to see this is still available on to watch even if it isn't on TV anymore.

God I miss that music and the really cool programs that used to be on when I was a kid.

Why did they stop this public service? - Far superior to whats on todays TV!

  • I remember just sitting at the front and listening intently to the music for the 1 minute countdown. The change from C to Am then F somehow hypnotized me as a kid

  • Funny how we all remember this, but never any of the programmes that followed!

Just seeing this again has opened a wonderful box of related memories as a kid that I'd totally forgotten about. Thank you.

  • @quadrant0127 Starting Science, The English Programme, A Place To Live, Living And Growing, Stop - Look - Listen, Picture Box, Seeing and Doing, Scientific Eye, ReadAbout, Time For A Story .... =]

  • wonderful old Amiga graphics as well I suspect

  • i remember this!

    wow back in the day

  • The tune at 1:07 I used to love as a kid.

  • why did everything have to "follow shortly" ? what were they doing that they couldn't just put the bloody programme on and not leave us lot sitting on our 70's orange carpet in whatever room was designated for "schools programmes" doing bugger all til we could shoot the countdown dots lol

  • @gobbygirl77 It was for schools who didn't have video recorders - so teachers could either wheel the TV into the classroom or get the students into the TV room (in our case it was the library & music room) and settle down for the programme. Not so much an issue for our school though - as early as 1983 (from having looked into my old primary school video archive a year or so ago) they were recording schools programmes from ITV and BBC on video.

  • I used to watch this as an unemployed youth. Ah! Love this, just sat there nothing to do but learn! the clock gave us time to get a cup of tea ready!

  • September 14th 1987, as its the first ever roto on TV

  • Ah yes, in would roll the metal trolley. VCR the size of a small village, telly crafted of solid oak.

  • @97channel None of this HD/ flatscreen business....good times.

  • Is brilliant to watch the schools in 80s and early 90s but some teacher's having a veryday to out to bed very early to start at 9:00am.

  • LOL! We all used to hum the theme tune before the schools programme started.

    Da,Da, Daa, Da-Da-Da, Daa-Daa-Daa :)

  • So did our class, and the class next door! You could always tell when a schools program was on by the sound of kids singing to the clock!! Personally I found the rotate better than the clock, dunno why, just do!

  • It was done because teachers had a schedule they could buy of the programs and what time they aired. As not all clocks were exactly accurate the times were an estimate, a guide to get in, sit down and watch. Also there werent many programs back then so time was always filled with test cards, intros and idents. im guessing the engineers needed time to load 'VT' and get it ready lol

  • I really do miss all that stuff, I gre up on it and I was mezmorized by the music while the logo was spinning. Only just last year I managed to get the full version of 'The Journey' by James Aldenham. Its such a great tune. Sod Digital tv, Kepp analogue alive!!!!!

  • Have you still got the full version of "The Journey" , what have you got it on? A CD?

  • TO: fraserkatie - Yes mate, still got it :) can email it to you if you like :)

Tried to send you a message but need your permission to send a message.

  • @JohnnyX50 Send it again! I will say yes to the message!

  • @JohnnyX50 Although I have a version I got from a website which showed schools presentation mp3s.

  • @fraserkatie I got my version from th eMusic House website which hosts all sorts of tunes for tv, but i have compared my version with the sub-tv website version and they sound identical =] I love frapping this tune out with some bass turned up, it still tingles my spine cos i remember at school i used to go home for lunch and would wait like a dog in front of tv just to hear this tune, sometimes even fake illness just to be in to hear it lol

  • @JohnnyX50 Found the eMusic House website , whats the album name it appears on?

  • @fraserkatie musichouse.co.uk, enter as guest, search surname Aldenham, 'search results' click Music House (3 hits) , Album is MHA-12 - PANORAMA for The Journey =] MHE-15 - THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT for Just A Minute =]

  • My god. A blast from the past or what?

This reminds me of the good old days in primary school sat in a circle around an old battered 80's school tv.

  • ...and the big toploader VHS player

  • Heh he, these intros were done deliberately because at that time many schools still didn't have recording equipment, and the teachers needed time to get the kids settled down before the programme started. Breathing space for the poor teachers!

  • Just a quick question about transcribing and uploading - I'm assuming this was originally recorded on VHS? What software and hardware do people use to get VHS tape into digital.

I've got loads of old VHS tapes which might have stuff I could add - if only I had the faintest idea how to go about it :)

Thanks for posting this - am a big fan of the music which I enjoyed when younger (though I was already an adult when it first apeared).

  • Hi:

    I could help you.

I have one VHS and I pass my tapes to DVD. Then I pass it to my PC. The files are in VOB extension so I need one program to convert it like winavi. Then It converts it to WMV. I use an AV connection so I have a very small level of sound, so I use Sony Vegas for up it. Also, I cut the files with sony vegas and then I reconvert it with Windows Media Maker.

Hope that I'll help you . Greetings

  • this is what early 90s primary school was like and late 80s for uk primary school kids. IT seem so long ago but 20 years is nothing really

  • Loved the intros, us 80s/early 90s kids knew how to party.

  • I certainly do - the last time I heard this, I was about 5 or 6!

It was almost certainly from an old, heavily re-used video as the ITV Schools transmissions had ceased by then - and now I recall those interminable periods waiting for the caretaker to fix the VCR machine, which often broke.

  • This is giving me goosebumps! :)

  • Heard this on a different channel the other day! I had been watching something on sky and they had it on one of the sky channels before the channel started!

  • oh my god the memories! we all used to sit on the carpet at primary school and hum along to this music...must've been over 15 years ago!

  • oh my god! I haven't seen this in about 17 years! :) I remember the music.. awesome, all the memories of being a little tiny kid sitting in a dark room at school watching tv..

  • when i was little this use to scare the hall out of me i dont know why

  • Oh wow - And there I was thinking my Infant fright of it was entirely random! It's so stupid now though really, it's quite innovative really even now!

  • Ahhh that fucking music, memories.

  • We once did an experiment where we had to guess a minute by clicking a stopwatch, blindfolded. Everyone else tried counting and nobody came within 7 seconds. I played this tune (Just a Minute) in my head and got to within 1 second.

  • We used to all sit cramped in the TV room. The teachers knew we loved the countdown. If we'd been good she'd play it, but if not she'd fast forward through it and we'd all groan!

  • had a similar thing!this is great, pity kids these days will never know the beauty of such things.reminds me of my grandad rip.happy daysx

  • This brings back memories of top loading Panasonic video recorders and teachers who didn't know how to work them!

  • lol, yeah i remember that

  • Judging by the above clip, this was taken from the very first of transmission on Channel 4 back on Monday 14 September 1987. It just goes to show that I know plenty of information on the history of ITV Schools and it's predecessor on Channel 4.

  • When I see this I think of when i was off sick from school. Does anybody remember before 1987 when it was on ITV with the dots and blue background?

  • Shows like Rat at tat tat

  • the music from 1:08 onwards is cllaed "just a minute"

  • Oh I miss this. Those ancient educational programs that were really a steaming great pile of turd. Thanks for posting, great memories of my childhood :D

  • I loved Channel 4 schools. I watched it all the time when I was little. I used to watch it at home when I was ill. But me and my friends watched it at school. Mrs Wilson who used to teach me she said we was all good so we watched channel 4 schools. We used to sing along to the theme tune and we used to dance to it too. Mrs Wilson just laughed. I'm never scared of this I am still not scared of it even though I am 19.

  • It's ITV Schools Not Channel 4!

  • Ooops I got confused sorry benriggers

  • Just Call Me Ben!

  • OK Ben. My name is Babe5677

  • It was called ITV Schools, but was broadcast on Channel 4.

ITV and Channel 4 used to advertise each others programs throughout the day too.

  • I like how the ITV logo imitates the Nintendo 64 logo.

  • more like the other way around. This was made 10 years before the N64 was released.

  • This really takes me back to when I was in primary school. Sat cross legged on the carpet in the TV Room, my friends and I used to link arms, sway and sing along to the Just a minute countdown. I used to think the rotomotion thing was boring but liked (And still do) the bit at the end when the ITV pieces pause and reverse into Just a minute! I agree the graphics and music were advanced for the year, and praise my former primary school teachers for letting us watch it!

  • I Don't Think The Roto Was Boring. The 9.30am Version (This Clip) Is Great. But The Rotos After 9.30am Do Tend To Drag On!

  • Check Out My ITV Schools Stuff I've Uploaded On My Channel!

  • I could never understand why it still said ITV when Channel 4 took over schools and colleges from ITV. I love the theme tune though.

  • I think that ITV and Channel 4 was on the same network. It the same with teletext on ITV, C4 and I think C5

  • good times i rememeber it well been at primary school watching for stupid educational programmme to come on takes me back ! (where's countdown bit ?)

  • haha i remember this i used to be scared of it for some reason

  • ah man this brings bak memories, i remember this when i was at school. I luved the songs on it, can u get them at all?

  • god, 1987 - 1992. I remember this sooo well, all the kids started dancing to the spinning disc music when it came on.

  • Always liked the music to ITV Schools I did it was powerful

  • Would be nice if Channle 4 did a programme of ITV Schools on Channel 4 -20 Years Ago

  • Cant believe its 20 years since this appeared.

Brilliant music even after all this time.

  • The one min music is also available in the same webpage under 'Just a minute'. These tracks were wasted on the schools startup

  • This music is available to download in crystal-clear mp3 at sub-tv dot co dot uk/schoolsmusic.asp under 'The Journey'.

  • I remember is so well.

  • I loved this ident and the tune. The tune was well ahead of it's time!!

  • I love the video, esp. the music! reminds me of p2 and p3. where do the years go!?! That tune should ave been made number 1!

  • Ah the memories... The Journey piece makses the hairs on the back of my neck and legs stand on end lol!

  • Can you do a 20th anniversary movie for YouTube. This can be called "Schools on Channel 4 20 Years and

Counting!" From the beginning of ITV Schools to

    today.

  • Shit! I Forgot It Was 20 Years Since ITV Schools On Channel 4 Appeared!

  • 20 years on and the CGI still looks great, especially the reflections from the spinning itv logo. Revolutionary at the time. What a find for youtube!

  • This is the best song ever made. We used to rap to this music in year 5/6 at primary school.

  • Yay! I never thought I'd see this again - reminds me of when I was off sick from school, sat up in my mum's bed with the flu. ^_^

  • Shame it doesn't include the whole of "The Journey" in the rotomotion as towards the end it has a bit more beat.

  • Oh god. I can't explain how watching this makes me feel.

  • Makes me feel 7 again!

  • incidentally, where's the countdown clock or am i thinking of something else?

  • What dull music! The best one I've heard was from the ITV schools countdown in the 60s, which is on the 'net, but I may have it too.

  • its like being back at school

  • oh, most days this got fast forwarded darn taped versions...

  • my school taped them, it was just a room of videos i recall. and sit cross-legged, tallest at the back sigh...

  • same with my school, i hated primary school

  • They put this on Radio 1 the other week and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the tune was. Thank god I do now!

  • This is Independent Television For Schools & Colleges

    on Channel 4.

  • That was cool but why was ITV on channel 4?

  • I'm guessing you're too young to remember, but until 1993, Channel 4 was effectively part of ITV.

  • All the ITV stations had an equal share of Channel 4, and provided it with the adverts

  • ITV was on Channel 4 because it launched it'w own daytime schedule (The Time, The Place, Thie Morning, etc) to compete with BBC1 who had switched their schools programmes to BBC2.

  • Flashback to being off sick from school...

  • aw this is brilliant! i used to love the colours on the ITV logo... like oil reflecting sun (how poetic!LOL) nice post

  • how how many off you started to count down with the numbers. i see some even were sining to it and telling the teachers off not to fast forward. good times!!!

  • ur right, nothing like 90s nostalgia.

  • what a classic

  • I remember this!! My school couldn't afford a video player so the teachers used to wai for the countdown ITV thing and get us all in the TV room. I think that's what the whole countdown thing was for. Love the music though, great memories!!

  • I love these countdowns, its such a shame that there arnet schools programmes today. just shows technology like the net, sad really i remember alot of ch4 schools but loved bbc's words and pictures with sophie aldred and magic pencil best ! -).

  • hehehe, magic pencil rocked!

    anyone remember El Nombre?

  • oh man, i remember this. has anyone got the 30 second Channel 4 startup thing?

  • Gosh, I used to love hummimg along to the music when I was a kid. Pretty sad but great all the same!

  • I think I recall complaining to our teacher not to fast forward through the second song either :D

Me and my friends used to sing a long with it. Quality stuff!

  • sesame street 12

  • Ah dear god the memories, I remember watching this mostly when I was off school sick. I never saw this much in class because my teachers would always fast forward this before the educational programmes came on. This song is taking me back...sniff excuse me I have something in my eye.

  • lol m8 i get ya weird shit m8 brings the mems bk hey good old 90s

  • Absolute genius. I hadn't seen this since the late eighties/early nineties... I remember counting down the grey bit around the circle at the end. Absolute genius.

  • ah classic! i also used to tell the teacher to not fast-forward through this countdown but she gave me some funny looks!!

  • The original one used to scare the shit outta me. I used to tell my teacher to fast forward it.

  • This is the original one I think.

  • I remember growing up as a small child, watching this on Channel 4, even before the Start of the Big Breakfast.

  • Legendary!!!

I used to whistle along to "Just A Minute" catchy tune!! I'd love to watch some of the old schools programmes too... alas it's not ever gonna happen!

  • LOL! I like the comments here where shakystevens used to dance around his living room in circles to this and the comment about TheSTN not wanting his teacher to fast forward through it. LOL! Very funny!

  • shaunokeefe,

Nice to see you've ripped my video straight from schoolstv.com, or should i say TV Ark?

  • When I was at school we watch it live. I remember a program called Through the Dragon's eye.

  • That was a BBC schools program - it was mega!

  • Brilliant stuff! Reminds me of happy school days, and days off school when I'd still watch schools programmes - and the all important countdown. I remember my class asking the teacher to not fast-forward through it!

TV just seems to have lost all character now.

  • God more memories , now i used to remember sitting watching this if i was ill off school. or some boring programs the teachers used to record. Do you know the first song would go on for 6 Min's { the journey } But i don't think they ever showed it on TV Sept for once.

  • clap along to the second part always! legendary stuff!

  • this sure was good

  • oh THANK YOU SO MUCH for putting this video up- the 2 or so minutes trailer b4 a school programme was always the best- I loved doing the countdowns...

  • I used to love these musical clips before any of the schools programmes came on. Just so you know the music on this is firstly "The Journey" and the second piece of music is called "Just a Minute".

  • Just to add to that, both of the songs, The Journey and Just A Minute are by James Aldenham.

  • That used to be the scariest thing ever
