Used to think this as really funny but having read comments and finding out Lulu died 10 days after the filming of this due to a fall on her return as she was being brought out of the horsebox they used to bring her to the studio that day, I find it sad. I bet her handler there was a cruel guy hence she kept returning back to the presenters. Using a bullhook on her too? Shows how awful Zoo's were back then.
This video is quite funny but - I think - also a reminder that wild animals belong in their natural environment and not cramped up in our modern world.

LOL,that's freakin'funny! I remember seeing the BP elpehant clip on Dick Clark's bloopers awhile back. "OOH-GET OFF ME FOOT!" I love that part. And man,did those elephants have to go or what? LOL!
@IIIIIlIIIIIlIIIIlIlI You can't hear it on this clip because of all the canned laughter, but from watching another version of it, it sounds like, 'Martin.' Who, perhaps, was the handler's assistant/co-handler, who he was, assumably, asking to come and help him take the elephant out of the studio.
PS No they didn't make it very well known about Lulu, it wouldn't have looked good on Blue Peter. Biddy Baxter would have made sure it was covered up.
Yes it would have been a very stressful trip for her and obviously her mother would have been lactating and missing her whilst she was away, and when she died. Elephant mothers grieve deeply and for a long time. She could have still been alive today,as elephants live into their sixties. Hopefully we know better than to do such things today, and seeing elephants for children on tv would be in the form of an outside broadcast.
Lulu the Blue Peter elephant tripped getting out of her box on the way home and died a few days later. They shouldn't have taken a baby away from her mother into a tv studio for our 'entertainment'
I didn't know that! I makes sense why Lulu was so hard to control. They didn't make it very public that the animal died shortly after transmission. I'm not sure I will enjoy this clip so much in the future!

They wouldn't make it public at the time due to looking like complete idiots and upsetting the children viewers
