I executed john-386.exe _pswd.txt from dos and it came back with the following text: "Loaded 4 password hashes with no different salts (NT LM DES [32/32 BS])"

then, my processor maintained 50% from JTR and nothing else happened... How do I know this is actually running properly?? What is the maximum password length it will crack?

The possible reasons may be you don't have the administrative rights to use command prompt(cmd).
