What most people don't even remember is that the character of Det. Boris was first introduced filling in for "Barnaby Jones", while Buddy Ebsen was involved in a contract dispute. The issue was resolved when, during the six weeks that Ebsen was absent, ratings actually improved, forcing Ebsen to accept a more modest fee. Boris, of course, made no such demands - in contract negotiations he was by all accounts a pussycat.
Of course, there was another upside to this approach-- the character of Det. Brakovic, already made familiar to "Jones" viewers, moved freely from his own program to make occasional cameo appearances in CBS's other hit detective shows. One of my favorite "Boris" stories was actually a 1975 episode of "Cannon" that saw the portly P.I. team up with Boris (coming in on a redeye flight for his vacation) to take down a killer. The episode was called "Night Flight to Murder."
Fred Silverman, the chief programmer of CBS at the time, was interested in scheduling "offbeat" detective dramas featuring overweight {"CANNON"} and elderly {"BARNABY JONES"} detectives- he figured, why not an "animal" private eye [Fred might have been influenced by the success of "SCOOBY DOO" as well]? And it was the perfect "companion" to "BARNABY JONES" on whatever evening they were scheduled, back-to-back. During one season, "BORIS" drew more ratings than NBC's "THE ROCKFORD FILES"...

This was not a real show, and you only remember it because you were on drugs during that time period. 2 things, look up the "lead actor", and you of course wont find him. Look up the show...ditto. The only thing believable is that CBS actually would have considered airing a show like that...nice try and some good work though.
Oh, yeah. I seem to remember a similar situation with a film that was mentioned in "The Golden Turkey Awards" - "Dog of Norway" (1948), with "Muki the Wonder Hound."
Pretty good, but the shot at :39 kind of gives it away since there is a shelf of VHS tapes in the background, which didn't exist in 1973. Great "Channel 2, New York" bumper though.
Wow, good eye eyeh8cbs! That shelf of VHS tapes definitely gives it away as fake. The fact that it is a prime-time detective series starring a cat raises some suspicions as well.
Hmmm...I didn't notice the VHS tapes, but if this show was around in '73-'74, I think I would have seen it or at least heard of it. The kitty is cute though; he looks like a cat that I used to have.
Oh my God I haven't seen this show since I was a kid! Could you upload the episode where Boris goes undercover as a garbage man to find out who was strong arming city councilmen to get lucrative trash contracts? I think it was called "City Litter." Also the one with a young Jamie Lee Curtis as a roller disco queen if you have it.
That show was great. I used to watch it while eating economy-size tubs of tapioca pudding, back when I was morbidly obese. When they spun off Blizzard into her own show it went downhill. But the first two seasons were great
I used to watch this show with my grandma. She's dead now. Thanks for bringing back all those lost memories.

Wow, you figured it out. Why aren't you solving cases for the FBI?

Oh, there was another episode I recall, but can't specifically pinpoint the plot. The title, however, was memorable - "Puss in Cahoots."
wmbrown6 3 years ago
Oh yeah I remember that one. A very young F. Murray Abraham can be seen as a cabbie.

Ward and Anderson - any relation to Jay Ward and Alex Anderson (the forces behind Rocky & Bullwinkle), perhaps?

Love the music! What is it?
DuaneReade3000 3 years ago
It's the theme from "Boris". Duh.
Oh, and it is also sometimes known as "Truck Turner" by Isaac Hayes.
JoeDator 3 years ago
Boris should sue Hayes for plagiarism.
DuaneReade3000 3 years ago
Except that Hayes has passed on & Boris still has at least four lives left (three if you count the 1998 USA Network failed pilot Cat House).
mubirshu 2 years ago
Oh yeah, I've seen Cat House. it was a sitcom where Boris played coach to a sorority volleyball team. Thank God that never got picked up!
JoeDator 2 years ago
@JoeDator Oh yeah, I vaguely remember this but it was not actually "Cat" but "KAT" as in Kappa Alpha Tau, right?
