Yeah this song definitely deals with domestic violence, but that doesnt mean hes advocating. Of course hes not. Just because u write about something doesnt mean its completely autobiographical. I mean, Stephen King didnt try to axe murder his family in a hotel.....lol
Do people think the writers of CSI are serial killers? Not all songs are autobiographical, right? But domestic violence does take place in the world. There is nothing wrong with an artist documenting it. In my opinion.
the whole song is a metaphor. its about how she refuses to open up. and he puts all his energy into trying to get her to do so, but she wont. and despite that, his love is everlasting. the last line i dont take literally. ever tried to open a pickle jar and slapped the bottom to make it easier to open? i think it means that she begs him not to care about her. which is very touching.
i dont think hed write a song about domestic abuse. tweedy isnt like that
they almost never let the song be released for the last line. i dont care for your soft thoughts about of tweedy, i respect him more than anybody. he was a drug addict and he wrote his true feelings down of fustration.. he also wrote a song describing a dream killing his wife. what are tour thoughts on that?
I've always assumed that Jeff Tweedy had bought some personal battles over domestic abuse, nad not just because of the last line of this one. Witness the last verse of "At Least That's What You Said":

"You're irresistible when you get mad
Isn't it sad, I'm immune
I thought it was cute
For you to kiss
My purple black eye
Even though I caught it from you
I still think we're serious
At least that's what you said"
