Is it not good enough that he loves good poetry? Who cares about his reading skills, I just love the fact that he is trying to spread beautiful words. Fuck off with the elite attitude
Harry Dean Stanton reads this poem on You Tube. Look for it. It's like night and day. The guy here, is not a reader. Stanton is, and he has the voice for it, too.
Thanks guy!! I love this poem..and I usually hate poetry!! But Bukowski does something to me.....This poem speaks to me because I try to curb any emotion but I let it sit in my gut...or maybe I've had too much to drink!! its your call!!
Mr., Im sorry that your mouth connot convey what is in your heart. You lack the ablity to read to an audience especially in this setting. No dynamic, no flavor, you understand? Please, please stop reading out loud, especially bukowski. Instead, continue to speak to your heart using your mind and vise versa. Stop, please, stop reading outloud, stop using your mouth.
Hank was/is the "Walt Whitman" of the 20th Century. An excellent choice from a truly amazing collection of poetry. I also recommend his novel Women. You won't believe it! I give you a thumbs up, sir. You have good poetic taste. Perhaps you'll check out one of my recitations here at Youtube.
I completely agree with you blairtoo; I love bluebird and also think ham on rye is his best novel (although admittedly I have only read a few of his books). Great post.
hey, "post office" is a great choice. but my favorite bukowski novel is "ham on rye" the book about growing up and his father. thanks for the comment.
If you also like the poems from The last night of the earth poems, have a look at the Bach-Bukowski pages. Lots of beautiful poems sung in combination with Bach's music and it fits like a glove.
indeed, mr. bukowki, is one of my all time favs. i work a lot doing workshops in high school and often mention him.... although, for obvious reasons, he can rarely be read there.... but this poem might just work.

Sorry Charlie, don't pay any attention to this guy, he was breast fed by a goat as a baby, rolled in cowshit before school, and humped by a donkey as a teenager. Other wise he's ok.
Thanks, but my guess is that he would have jumped to defend this guy, roaring at us; You damn bullies, you wouldn't know a Bluebird if it flew up your ass!" Do you?
I hail the simple genius of Bukowski, especially his poetry. For me, a babbling hollow man with a head full of straw, he stands with Eliot and Ginsberg... HOWL!
Are you trying to tell me something? LOL! Everybody sees my bluebird, and everything else I am. It's far easier to tell the truth, that way you don't have to remember your lies. Just Rambling Jim! I enjoyed this!
I apologize for the way I worded it it was very rude- but I rely do object to your comment. I love the man and his poetry and I feel that your summing up of this poem (and by extension of Bukowski) was very reductive. Youve reduced this tragic, sublime poem into a trivial, Oprah-esque, self help platitude: Honesty is the best policy. Being so passionate about B.s work and probably a drunk, I took it as a personal insult.

you are reading with your head.
how does one read this poem without their heart, full, beautiful, longing, exquisite, and passionate.
for once i realized how one can NOT get it.
maybe i am exaggerating, but i feel you have put my favorite poem by charles bukowski to shame and i am just 18 years old.
