Wow. Absolutely stunning orchestra. I've never heard Bartok quite like this. The flute at 1:23 nearly brought a tear to my eye. Such an incredible piece.
I always enjoy watching entomologist Reinhold Seegers on timpani. This excerpt cuts off before the timpani glissando followed by rapid note changes with the use of footpedals.
Very very good performance, immediately reminds me of the legendary recording Maestro Dorati made with the London Symphony Orchestra, on the Mercury Living Presence label. Mr Bartok would be proud of this performance, IMHO...
I have listened to several versions of this work (including those of Boulez, Solti, Ozawa, Frühbeck de Burgos...) but I haven't ever heard such timbrical brilliance and utmost clarity of sound in any recording/performance!!! It is simply perfect!!! I wish I could have been there to attend this concert...
@SharpWMusic It's called a concerto because between the symphonic "incidents" where all the orchestra cooperates there are little concertante parts where one instrument or a group of instruments play solo with the rest of the orchestra supporting them like in a concerto. It could be called a symphonia concertante but Bartok, like other composers of the early 20th century (eg Hindemith) was trying to reinvent traditional musical forms and ideas and this is reflected on his works' titles
These videos are sensational. Great quality sound, camera work, musicality. Everything. BerlinPhil you're doing a great service to YouTube and to the world.
They are available as video streams in our Digital Concert Hall (of course also in the U.S.). There may be releases on DVD or CD, but not in the near future, I am afraid.

I remember playing this movement as a kid. We violas had fun strumming the 4 note pizzicato chords near the beginning.

If I didn't know better, I'd say that was John Williams conducting.

Are all of the bassists in this orchestra required to play on 5-stringed instruments?
AbsoluteZ3R0 1 year ago
@AbsoluteZ3R0 At least in European symphony orchestras 5-stringed double basses are common.

It's a shame not a lot of young people listen to classical music nowadays. I'm one of the few who do, though! :)

All classical music should be presented with such execution and enthusiasm! It's performances like this that got me hooked as a child.

"Awsome" is what comes up in my mind when i listen to this.
Little question, why is this called a Concerto for orchestra instead of a Symphony?

The first flute has a solo at 1:23, directly after which he gives a smug look at the second flute. I find this hilarious. :P

What would it take to get one of those seats directly behind the percussion?
MaxxUS08 2 years ago 10
They are sold at a special price (15 €) 3 days before a concert.
BerlinPhil 2 years ago 3
@BerlinPhil That's a pretty cool idea. If I could go to Germany, I would totally try to get one of those seats to one of your performances.
Farnik01 1 year ago
Actually, those are the cheapest places. :) I was surprised myself, they're usually around 10 euros (15 USD)
