  • Schon fast eine Art National Heiligtum die Berliner Philharmonie! Wenn man das hier hört, dann weiss man auch wieso

  • Wow. Absolutely stunning orchestra. I've never heard Bartok quite like this. The flute at 1:23 nearly brought a tear to my eye. Such an incredible piece.

  • wow. what an amazing conductor! sooo articulate!!!

  • Love the camera work at 1:27

  • 1:14 Brahms..

  • amazing!!!

  • Best performance I've ever heard, and I've heard many!

  • Man that quick panning starting at 1:26 is hot. Props to the directors/producers whoever did it

  • I remember playing this movement as a kid. We violas had fun strumming the 4 note pizzicato chords near the beginning.

  • If I didn't know better, I'd say that was John Williams conducting.

  • fuck, 1st violinist is rockin' as hell haha

  • I love the camera job from 1.23 to 1.36 !

  • Are all of the bassists in this orchestra required to play on 5-stringed instruments?

  • @AbsoluteZ3R0 At least in European symphony orchestras 5-stringed double basses are common.

  • It's a shame not a lot of young people listen to classical music nowadays. I'm one of the few who do, though! :)

  • I always enjoy watching entomologist Reinhold Seegers on timpani. This excerpt cuts off before the timpani glissando followed by rapid note changes with the use of footpedals.

  • May I ask which movement is this?

  • @stevenj124 It is from the fifth movement: Finale (Pesante - Presto)

  • All classical music should be presented with such execution and enthusiasm! It's performances like this that got me hooked as a child.

  • Very very good performance, immediately reminds me of the legendary recording Maestro Dorati made with the London Symphony Orchestra, on the Mercury Living Presence label. Mr Bartok would be proud of this performance, IMHO...

  • I have listened to several versions of this work (including those of Boulez, Solti, Ozawa, Frühbeck de Burgos...) but I haven't ever heard such timbrical brilliance and utmost clarity of sound in any recording/performance!!! It is simply perfect!!! I wish I could have been there to attend this concert...

  • The camera work is very dramatic :-)

  • For once the camera man did a good job!

  • Is there any chance you're planing to go to other countries in the future???, I think the whole world would preciate it.

  • "Awsome" is what comes up in my mind when i listen to this.

Little question, why is this called a Concerto for orchestra instead of a Symphony?

  • @SharpWMusic It's called a concerto because between the symphonic "incidents" where all the orchestra cooperates there are little concertante parts where one instrument or a group of instruments play solo with the rest of the orchestra supporting them like in a concerto. It could be called a symphonia concertante but Bartok, like other composers of the early 20th century (eg Hindemith) was trying to reinvent traditional musical forms and ideas and this is reflected on his works' titles

  • The first flute has a solo at 1:23, directly after which he gives a smug look at the second flute. I find this hilarious. :P

  • @abslch Yes it IS very funny...

  • These videos are sensational. Great quality sound, camera work, musicality. Everything. BerlinPhil you're doing a great service to YouTube and to the world.

  • That flute guy is fine. Hottt.

  • @sceptember i like the clarinet guy more..

  • @surrealillness the oboe guy is much better ; )

  • 1:14

    Extreme Tuba!

  • 2:03

    aww, he's happy

  • also i like what the last stand of the 1st violins does at 0:42. He gets into it!

  • Is the full version of this performance available?

  • Great. I'm gunna se a performance of this piece, sadly not by the BPO, but the Boston Youth Symphony.

  • What would it take to get one of those seats directly behind the percussion?

  • They are sold at a special price (15 €) 3 days before a concert.

  • @BerlinPhil That's a pretty cool idea. If I could go to Germany, I would totally try to get one of those seats to one of your performances.

  • Actually, those are the cheapest places. :) I was surprised myself, they're usually around 10 euros (15 USD)

  • Yeah, but I imagine they could be hard to get in big concerts.

  • Fantastic quality.

  • Great rendition!

  • Please bring out a DVD of this! I've already booked my flight tickets to Berlin!

  • 0:25-0:45 is amazing. really exciting.

  • Berlin Philharmonic is flawless. They make this piece come alive! I like Zinmans style too. I would love to be in berlin.

  • great performance, thanks for posting

  • incredible the quality of videos!

  • David Zinman...a good performance of Bartok..

  • hahaha look at the violinist furthest t the left at 0:39 till 0:44. He looks like he's enjoying it... a bit

  • I really like this way of filming the orcherstra! Feels more alive, like the music they are playing here, fantastic!

  • Are these broadcasts valid in the U.S.?

  • They are available as video streams in our Digital Concert Hall (of course also in the U.S.). There may be releases on DVD or CD, but not in the near future, I am afraid.

  • Bass trombone + Tuba win at 1:16

  • lol hell yea!

  • 105 look at first 2nd violinist haha

  • and 5 string doubles kick ass

  • And?

  • funny face

  • Not really, and I assume you mean the concertmaster; you can't see the second violins.

  • yeah but iii thought the correction was implied. still funny face lol not really burning him or anything

  • errr i think that guy in the back of the firsts took a little too big of a leap there at 0:42.. but that just adds to how amazing this is!

  • GREAT :D

  • love it!

just a suggestion: Berlin Phil is a mature enough group to do without the silly camerawork.

  • it's like a safari expedition! whoosh!

  • The splendor of the Berlin Philharmonic gives total justice to Bartok's masterpiece.....I have the old Karajan CD with Berlin which I find fascinating......

  • OMG, i thought i dident like Bartok but this was fantastic

  • I haven't heard this for ages....I'm concentrating on the classical Era at the moment.....

  • My favorite piece ever written!!!

  • Especially that concertmaster! Haha

  • Concertmaster's hair is awesome!

  • hmmm..Bartok, love it leave it...i love it

  • Me too! Greetings from Hungary :-)
