Italy was a facist nation as well. Hitler had most of his ideas from mussolini. They were attacking Great Britain in africa just by themselfs. Germany had to help them, in africa, in greece...
..and in this movie the italians are pictured as the most peaceful partybrigade ever. That sucks!!! The Germans committed crimes (wich i fully pitty). but the italians weren't better (they just fought worse)
Remember what Churchill said of the Italian soldiers of the Folgore? Do you remember what did the Alpini in Russia? Do you know of the many Italian regiments who fought alongside the Allies to liberate Italy? You know how many deaths did fascism in Italy? If you could not go at war your family was killed
The fact is that no one in Italy really wanted to join the war, only Mussolini wanted it, he did really think that Germany would have won very quickly after the first months and he absolutely wanted to be on the right side for that time, because of his personal ambition... Fuck off fascism, w la libertà e la democrazia!
@jimsy73 the italians all wanted to join when there seemed to be easy pickings in Nizza, Savoie, Dalmatia, Greece and Egypt and all left like rats on a sinking boat when the allies occupied Sicily
This movie depicts the tragedy of WW2 for Italy. While Germany entered the war with revolutionary technology and massive amounts of troops and equipment, Italy's still had minimal equipment which was at WW1 level at best. When the allies landed in Italy they made a deal with the King: Italy would surrender and the allied bombings would stop, but Italy would have to side with the Allies against Germany!. This made the Germans angry.
That is why the Germans retaliated, from their point of view, Italy betrayed them. In the end all Italian soldiers found themselves leaderless from one day to the next. About 60,000 were taken to labor camps by the Germans, thousands were murdered in Greece. Many more died in the Russian winter. Even after the war was over, the killing between Italian Partisans and Italians who were though as being fascist sympathizers continued.
Thousands more were killed. The American landing in Sicily, which was accomplished by the Americans making a deal with the Sicilian Mafia, also caused the Germans to withdraw some troops and equipment from Stalingrad, contributing to their defeat there.
Overall all Italians and all Germans and all men who thought and died in the war deserved to be remembered with honour, as soldiers who fight and die bravely for their country, regardless of ideology. Let us hope that in the future all Europeans, Russians and Americans can live in peace!
@insubrian Unfortunately peace is unattainable with the current human mindset, and hope alone cannot get us there. As for the first statement, I disagree strongly. War is not all bravery, valor and honor; more often than not, its the most base instincts that take control, resulting in pillaging, rape, murder, genocide. Patriotism and dying for ones' country does not equal absolution nor redemption.

@jimsy73 Germany probably would've won too had it not been for Hitler's over ambitious agenda.
