@Shiftaws Muting with your palm is ridiculously inefficient and hard. Use your pick-hand thumb.  You can also fix half the problem by relaxing your finger after playing a note before pulling your finger all the way off to mute the note(this should be done while simultaneously playing the next note). This will eliminate most of the noise, and your thumb can mute any noise that may be created by pulling off.

I just palm mute it. after I hit the note. Takes a bit of practice. I used to use one but i mean you can't use one forever. But i used a hair tie, a lanyard works good too.

it mutes the strings so you don't get excess noise from your strings when you sweep. It's best to put it lower on the neck so you have access to more notes. He may have done it with the sock because he was getting alot of noise on his sweeps.
