In the Notification bar, you will see this thing about updating and you just click that. When you click it, this pop up will say Update or Not Update or wahtever. You just click the one that says update.

I went to the T-Mobile website and found out that everyone WILL receive the Cupcake update by the end of this month. They're distributing the update 'over the air'. That basically means you'll receive your update at a random day and time, so just be patient and we'll all receive our updates soon! If you wanna find out more information for yourself, just go to the frequently asked questions for the G1 on T-Mobile.

It's unfortunate really. Google should have no trouble finding talented people to design something that looks more polished and current. They're practically right up the street from Apple. Seems like they could hire some of their help away or just find somebody somewhere with better taste. Since, for the moment, Apple seems as if they're determined to remain exclusive to AT&T, it would be nice if there was an alternative that was just as nice. It can be done. Google just needs to do it.

Also, if you could (or anyone else for that matter) answer a question. As the update installed it had a force close/wait option. I waited so assume everything is ok. However, i can see the Sound Recorder option in my application managment subfolder, but not in my home area. Ive seen it on a few 1.5 vids/reviews. the google search bar has a mic option. I assume to speak and it searches what u said. mine dusnt have that. Any ideas? Cheers guys, Great vid btw. :)

Just a quick comment. I got the 1.5 update this morning. On my normal G1 (not a dev phone or anything) and I have my youtube account linked to my hotmail account. However, when i clicked on my account button and it took me to my youtube account! That was scary. My username for youtube is the same as my username on my google account. but not the email., how odd.

I am very skeptical about people in US commenting and saying that they have goten the OTA update. To my knowledge, it would make sense for HTC to release a beta version of the 1.5 firmware for developers while T-Mobile is distributing the final version to it's costumers. It has to be done the opposite way. And remember that finalization of the firmware takes more than 3-4 days. Some even reported the update 3-4 days after the dev. firmware saw light. Cmon gys????

Thank you for this series of questions. To answer it in one sentence, I would say that this procedure was done on a RC30 build, where there was root access to the system, I am using T-Mobile US service on it and the phone isn't unlocked. As a matter fact its a regular retail version of the G1 that was rooted and updated to the newest dev version released by the HTC. Modifications were done as a concept check, and solely for demonstration purposes only.

T-mobile UK only sent out the cupcake to 1000 G1's before they actually release it tommorow(monday) and the US updates were Dev phone updates.... people that have the JF mods will receive an update notification because the update thinks that its a Dev phone... Thank you for the reply vrosario2. Yes, in fact the auto rotate feature is present in the current build. Its incorporated in all apps, with an exception of the main screen and the android store. You could actually select and deselect that feature from the menu. I have found typing on the on-screan keyboard a bit inconvenient, due to its size in the portrait mode and its response time. I hope google will otimize that before releasing the final OTA.

Hopefully someone will make a T9 version of a keyboard so that portrait-mode won't be too small. If Google doesn't make it, certainly a developer will, now that the framework for a virtual keyboard is in place.

It's unfortunate they didn't make the video camera record in the H.264 format with AAC audio, most Nokia phones can do this and the quality is much better.

The 'dropped frames' when recording video is due to the lack of light hitting the sensor. Take it out in decent light and it'll be smooth as silk.

I actually have this on my G1 and it does in fact drop frames in any llight. Ofcourse it drops less but its insignificant.

If you are worried about your phone being stolen, you can place an unlock pattern during the screen unlock. This will prevent anyone from gaining unauthorized access to your phone. The guy doing this video did not have the pattern lock on the phone.

Your assumption is right. All passwords are automatically pre-entered after the initial setup. As of now, the only thing that will protect the end user from intruders is either an unlock pattern or a code.

I agree with the fact that you should be a bit hesitant about rooting your phone and installing this update. Prior to the time when I have performed it, HTC's support web page clearly stated on the developers page that this very update will not yet allow you to go back to another firmware. Also, it's logical to presume that the new firmware update from T-Mobile may very well brick the phone, if such is performed. Just use this video to set expectations, but listen to dashaunyng :) Good comment!

Thank you both for the comments, guys. I am apologizing for the commentary quality. The video was done VERY quick, without any rehersal. Any criticism is good. I take it constructively. The Youtube app in fact allows logging in. Also, one thing that I didn't point out was the new feature, where a text from a web page could be selected and automatically copied into the exchange buffer for further usage. I think that its one of the best features of this build, along with the camera and uploads!
