The F1 has held up for me for over 5 years now. I didnt try to keep the convex blade sharp - I took a few hours out of my live and ground a 2mm 23dgree angle on the edge with the fallkniven dc4 sharpening stone.
It's an awesome knife, it has survived being dropped off a cliff, battening, hammering into wood and my relitavely careless ownership. i expect to leave it to someone in my will in 20 or so years.
Hm, sweet blade. Thanks for the review. May have to add this one to the fold. I'm turning into somewhat of a knife collector just from looking for the perfect survival knife, lol.
7 years ago I buyed my first F1, after that i have tried maybe 100+ different knives for bushcraft (or better, general purpose outdoor use)... Now i am returned back to the F1 because is close to perfection (for my needs). Stainless steel (some time i found my carbon steel knives get rusty in less 24 hours; i can' t manage it), 148 grams, pretty easy to resharp (not like carbon steel but 100 time better than D2). The only similar knife is the Enzo Trapper in S30V; I love them both...
I know what you mean when I called the first time to check prices before I ordered I didn't realize I was talking to LT at first and when I did I started to get all nervous and trip over my words. He seemed like a really great guy when I called a few days later to order the knife he even remembered me
@enjoiorange It has become a close second, but not because of function or design, mostly because the guys at BHK are friends of mine so it adds a bit more value to me personally. I use each still in separate kits though, I love them both.
Most bushcraft knives I've seen on youtube have a Scandinavian grind. Are there disadvantages in using a knife with a convex grind for bushcraft? Thanks.
@lesamourai777 People go for Scandi for a couple of Reasons - The major one is that the Scandi Grind is super easy to sharpen, even for beginners, and the second is that a Scandi Grind can make longer and thinner feather sticks for fire starting. The Convex is harder to sharpen, but in my experience does all the same tasks just as well, its just harder to sharpen.
@secretsquirrell13 I carry a Fallkniven DC4 sharpener with me at all times. I use it for my Scandi Bushcrafter as well. It is a great lightweight sharpener.
@canteencorner but what about stropping and a mouse pad and sand paper and all that jazz for the convex.......sorry bro im doing my reasearch before i invest.....im looking at a bravo 1, f1, or just say the hell with it and stick with a scandi and get an enzo trapper thanks for the response.
@secretsquirrell13 Besides the Fallkniven DC4 I usually have the belt I had custom made. The underside was left natural so I can use it as a strop in the woods if I need to.
@canteencorner Great vid and review. Well done. All I could afford before going to Thailand was the Gerber LMF Inf.; though I wanted a Falkniven, and will buy. I don't think you can buy a better production knife for the money. IMHO Which one to get is the question, but I've always been partial to F1 type size.. My Gerber is holding up pretty well, with a decent sharperner in the sheath; though most of the chores are processing meat I buy at open markets; I hate the serrations!
@rockyroeba I would go with the A1 on that. It is more of a one tool option due to the blade length The F1 is under 4" so that will limit you on what you can baton through, the A1 would be better suited for your needs.
nice knife, i prefer my ka-bar though it has heft and quality steel.... i picked it up off amazon for 50 bucks.....what steel is this particular knife made out of though??
I got the DC4 stone recently. According to the package's instructions, I am supposed to use a circular motion on the edge with the sharpening stone, and lift the blade up about equal to the thickness of the blade itself while sharpening it. I have also tried the technique of as if I am cutting into the stone with the edge while sharpening it. Both sharpening techniques dont seem to be able to get my F1 back to out-of-the-box hair shaving sharp. Anyone with suggestions? thank you
'been using CS masterhunter and 'recently a F1. Many people compare these two.
But no possible comparison exept for the general look, The F1 as a much better steel and balance in hand. and despite it's convex shape, I find the F1 easier to sharpen. I didn't catch in your vid the name and place where you get that custom grip? Anyway, Keep on going like this!
@canteencorner Hi Rob, when you use the DC4 sharpening stone from Fallkiven, how long are you using it, of course that depends on how dull the edge has become by the time you sharpen it. thanks.
I have the same knife, and after sharpning it i can shave my face with it. The only thing i don´t like from de vg10 steel is that its realy soft. My point is blunt from when i stuck it in an ham and it hit the bone. But great knife from the sweeds. And yes the back realy does create A LOT of sparks. Good luck with it!
Thanks for a great clip. I would like to offer a suggestion to aid the retention of your ferrosteel in the scabard . It is essentially what you are doing already but just swap out the paracord for some small diameter bungee cord and it is positively retained and going nowhere .
i own several knives from many well known companies like coldsteel, sog and benchmade to name a few. I must say that none of the knives i have from these companies come close to the the quality of a fallkniven. I have the F1 and S1 version and both are exellent, my personal preference being the S1. @aseglkj 1095 is a universially recognized steel as being one the the best or most preferred steels to have on a knive that dosent cost you a fortune to buy, micarta is not cheap, unergonomic? its totally up to personal preference, the knife is tough as nails, but i do want to get another knife...but after i get that knife i'll probably want another one after that.
@secretsquirrell13 Well, 1095 is recognized as a cheap steel that can be quite ok for knives with a good heat treat, but it doesn't hold an edge very well and rusts like crazy and then you get microchips. But it's still one of the cheapest steels, simply iron with .95% carbon. That's why ESEE is ridiculously overpriced compared to e.g. Fallkniven. And if you ask people who own both ESEE and fallkniven, they will tell you they prefer fallkniven by far.
@aseglkj oh i wouldnt doubt it one bit, once i get the funds i'll most def. be getting a fallkniven but i want the custom handels and its like $250 @ ksf.....its only a matter of time. the only gripe i have about the rat-4 that i have is that the finish isint as tough as it should be, my ka-bar heavy bowie thats made in taiwan by the way, has a better more robust finish on it than the rat and that does dissapoint me quite a bit.

I think the Fallkniven VG-10 is at something like ~60 rockwell. Is carbon steel harder? It depends. To make it simple: the *type* of steel (1095, VG-10, etc.) basically determines the range of possible hardnesses; the heat treatment is what picks out a possible hardness. Generally as hardness goes up so does wear resistance -- and as those go up the steel's toughness goes down. Stainless steels typically get brittle at high hardness before carbon steels...but there's a big range

Interesting. I only have Spyderco folders in VG10, which I love to light/medium use. I have a few Moras and a BRKT Gunny for the real hard use, as well as some 1095 fixed. I always thought of VG10 as more of a hard but brittle steel. Thanks for the review.

(your method) People I've talked to have had a hard time getting the edge back to the original sharpness. Thanks
@oneonebravo11B I don't have anything against the PF Knife, it is a beautiful blade. I have been using my F1 well before Dave even had it designed though. You don't ditch your best friend just because you made a new friend brother.

hi, i dont know what to choose, the A1 or the F1,
ill be backpacking in scandinavia and i need a good allround knife,

Is the F1 capable to do these things without problem?
Or is the A1 a better choise

How come you don't use the Pathfinder Knife.

@oneonebravo11B I don't have anything against the PF Knife, it is a beautiful blade. I have been using my F1 well before Dave even had it designed though. You don't ditch your best friend just because you made a new friend brother.

LOL. Thats a great line. I have the pathfinder but just like the BHK Bushcrafter better.

Cool knife looks sturdy I have a SOG Seal pup. It's really light weight.
