I have commented before about this video. I must say it again. Absolutely stunning. In the Islamic world or the West; 10,000 poems have been written about wooden boats. There is nothing more symbolic of the life of human beings than a wooden boat. The metaphorical comparison is perfect, and the The song by Sting makes it other worldly. All human beings are connected to the sea if you live in the Sahara, or New England. (Quote)"Set your sails in angry storms, Vanquish fears unnumberd forms."
It is nearly impossible for one to imagine a more perfect song to fit the construction of such a beautiful craft. The building of a boat is for the majority of shipwrights a sacred act. If there is anything in the universe that exemplifies the sacred in the acts of men it is the construction of a woulden boat. From the prehistoric man clinging to a floating log or debris to colonize a new land to the streched goatskin boats are a metaphore of our cosmic journey Thanks for the video masterpice
i would love to be a boat-builder's apprentice sometime soon... boy that would be a dream come true at 37 two kids and full time work. nice video indeed. The turks are great craftsmen at building in general as well as vocational skills like boat building. Mashallah
Lovely lines.... if Nature itself imagined what a hull should look like, this might be what the thought would be. Crafted by skilled boat builders, yes... but designed by Nature.
hi there, ihave a dream of building a boat, and i have started it with building models, could you pls help me and give me idea where i can get or download a plan for this kind of boat, thanx
Just what do you know about Greek (or Turkish) shipbuilding?
Your country tried hard to be a seafaring nation in imitation of the Spaniards and the Dutch and eventually failed. Back to zero now, No shipyards, no fleet, no seamen. Press-ganging is not sufficient to create a seafaring nation.
The shipbuilding style that you see in this video has its roots at least in the time of Homer. Craftsmen with few tools creating wonderful boats that "sit" on the water properly.
Congratulations to the Turks who keep alive the Greek tradition of wooden boat building. Then again Bodrum is really Halicarnassus and the shipwrights (like the rest of the population of the eastern Aegean) are not really Turks but Greeks who became Muslims and now speak Turkish. Finally, the boats are very good but if you want to make the look really beautiful come to Greece proper to see how it is done.
Why do you not post some evidence to back up your claim of Greek boat building. The only Greek ships I come across are shabby rust buckets that are run on a shoestring.
Although I have no picture evidence, People who know about this type of shipbuilding would understand what I meant. Like in the English language where your accent shows the region where you come from and your social status, the lines of these boats and the way they float are indicative of the region where they were build and the shipwright who built them. The sturdiest and most harmonious lines can be found in some of the greek islands and mainland Greece.
