  • @Bambootiful

look above the box where you choose layers and see a box that writes mode on the left hand side.its probably in normal mode

  • you forgot to show the "show/hide layer" option

  • are u using a tablet?

  • how did u drew ur little black and white person??

  • Now I know how to use the layer. Thank You! i 3 u

  • Thank you so much for makeing this! I have used Sai for two days now (hahaha total noob with this program) and this is is the solution on my bigest problem AND question.

Never used layers before so I owe you alot -hugs-

ps. Looking forward to see other vids from you! (^_^)

  • hey, I have a question. So I created another layer + placed it under the lineart layer, but the color doesn't show up...do you have any idea how to fix this? I heard from somebody else that if you change the format of the file to .sai instead of .jpg, it'll work, but it didn't...HELP

  • Thank you very much. This video helped me out tons!

  • i like your song, whats the name?

  • yeahh,,,THE layer is MY Best friend,

    ,,nice JOB DUde...

  • this music is beatiful :D

  • Hey, I did a line art on ms paint and then opened it on sai but when i make a new layer if doesn't draw on it at all? could you help me with this?

  • how do you get the 'scratch' thing....

  • @harrypottertacos123 You can find it by going to the tabs at the top and clicking Window>Scratchpad :) Another way is to go towards the top of your screen, above your colour/tool panel, and look for a little box that has little gray spots in it. It should be in a row of five boxes, and the box to look for is on the very right of that row :)

  • Why do 2 people came here just to dislike it? Why do they watch it if they don't like it? Get a life fucking dislikers.

  • hi your tutorial really helped me out XDDDD

but i was wondering, how do you save your drawing on paint tool sai??

  • @XDhyperplushiekatXD Thanks for watching! :) To save your drawing, go ahead and go to File>Save As... at the top OR press CTRL+S :) There, you can rename your file and place it in a folder on your computer.

  • how do I erase the sketch?

  • @RokkinEmAnimes Hmm, have you made sure that the layer that the sketch is on is selected before erasing?

  • hey i'm new to this and i'm having trouble with the bending process can u help me?

  • umm, you know your "tools" are on the right side when you draw? how do you move it because mine are on the left side and it's a bit inconvinent for me so you know how to move it?

    sorry if i didnt explain it very well ^_^;

  • @EneriOtaku go to window option on the top bar and simply select the colour on right side option :)

  • @EneriOtaku Go to view and u should be able to change everything around. Play with View settings for a while to toggle what you want :) if you don't like what you've done you can go back and change it.

  • @EneriOtaku Go to Window, and the very bottom should have settings you can tweak with to move them around ^^

  • @pinkmochix3 This was very helpful! I just got Paint Tool SAI and I have no idea how to use it! Could you cover how to select things with the magic wand?

  • @hanfan26 i'ma subscribe to you thx for helping me

  • This really helped me!

    Thank you very much :D

  • I find it more interesting to have a fellow noob explain things because we are all finding out these things for ourselves. :) I feel I can relate more,and understand more of what you are saying. c;

    Thank you.

    10/10

  • I did everything you told in the video...and I still can't colour it u.u

  • @LucyMichaelis never mind! I did it! XD

  • Is it possible to make layers in SAI look like in Photoshop "Layer Bounds" mode? And how to select several (3 for example) layers to merge them?

  • @RaeikonAO Sorry for the late reply! I'm not as familiar with photoshop, so I'm not quite sure what you mean by "Layer Bounds" mode D: If you mean coloring on the second layer within the image of the first layer, try checking "clipping group" for the second layer. OR, you could try preserve opacity if you want to that on one layer. If that's not what you mean, I'm sorry! Also, I don't think there is a way to select several layers at a time, so you'll just have to move them together and merge

  • @RaeikonAO them one by one using the icon with the scissors and paper (above the layers box). Hope this helps!

  • @pinkmochix3 WHEEEEEE thx 4 da help! :D i was angry at my computor. sooooo yea if i cant figure it out now, im a complete idiot so thx!

  • I admire how you're not like those conceited poops out there that are all" Just because I posted this doesn't mean you can copy my style". And, THANKYOU this helped me soo much. I'm not good at these things, and you broke it down in such a way I understood! +_+<Sparkly eyes

  • @Eric858 Aww, thank you haha! >u<

  • what song did you use in 3:52 ???

  • Hi your tuto is great ! But me too when i tried to colour it on the second layer nothing appears & yet the lineart has the mode "multiply" ?

  • @xSakiina Ah, the lineart should be on normal mode, and the second layer (for coloring) on top should be set to multiply :)

  • what do you use..mouse or pen??.,cause it is so hard to use mouse...and i don't have a choice..,i only have mouse... T_T

  • @nikzjay02 I use a tablet pen ^_^

  • this is a great video, but the thing is when i color on the second layer, it doesn't color places where i previously erased on the 1st layer. Any help??!!please...

  • @kawaiichibibunny Try seeing if your "preserve opacity" button is checked. (It should be above the layer box) If it is, uncheck and try again :)

  • @pinkmochix3 thankyou so much! im a new comer to sai...sooo i felt like a newb...hahaa...(also thankyou for replying! keep up the good work!)

  • Since I don't have a tablet, I scanned a picture, uploaded it to a site and then copied the image and pasted it in SAI for it to be my lineart. I created a new layer so I could color it and moved the layer below the lineart. When I tried to color, no color showed up. When I moved the layer above the lineart one, it showed the color over the lines, what do I do?!

  • @miphino Make sure that the (color) layer above the lineart is set to the mode "multiply," then it should work :)

  • thanks ever so much on the layers!! i was always struggling because i didnt know how to colour on seperate layers without one colour going over the other...

    SO THANKYOUUU~ (OWO)~<3

  • umm ive been asking everyone i know this and they cant seem to anwser it. can you explain layer sets and how to use them to me please, im really confuzed X.X

  • @JinchirinkiPro Sets are just a way to organize your layer ^_^ For example if, you had different parts of a background (like say, "sun," "cloud," and "grass" for example) you could group those together in a set named "background" for better organization.

  • @pinkmochix3 Thanks :D youve helped me lotz :) -gives you lots of love- thanks again

  • I did everything you said but when I tried to colour it on the second layer , nothing appears , please help ):

  • @chisuruMiki Try putting your coloring on top of the lineart and change the mode to "multiply" instead ^_^

  • @pinkmochix3 It works ! Thanks :)

  • can u blend ur bg on that layer on 5:35? :D

  • hey i was wondering where you got your copy of paint tool sai...

  • This is an awesome tutorial. Thanks a lot pinkmochix3 ^^

  • How do you unlock a locked layer? ^^

  • How I change the colors panel to the right

  • @wizardis96 window>show color and tool to right :)

  • when i color, it doesnt even show up on the color layer? What did i do wrong?

  • @InvaderJezIZ Try making a new layer and placing it on top of the lineart, then changing the mode to "multiply."

  • @pinkmochix3 how do i change it to mulitply, sorry im a newbie to this program

  • @pinkmochix3 wait nvm i tried multiply and i didnt work in any way .-.

  • @InvaderJezIZ Did you place the multiply layer on top of the lineart?

  • @pinkmochix3 yea, but i got it working now ^^ thanks *hugs*

  • @InvaderJezIZ Thats happened to me :o click Selection and if your able to click Deselect, click it! :3 sometimes something is selected without you seeing et :o

  • @InvaderJezIZ you probably put the color layer behind the other layers causing it to not overlapse with the other layers. put the color layer ontop of the rest of them

  • thanks you really helped me >_<

  • so its good if i use the lineart for multiply

and the backround and colours for normal?

  • thhaaaank you soo much for your tutorials it help me so much ! <3

by the can you plz tell me the name of the second song =D

  • You are my new best friend for making this!

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

  • How do you make transparent backgrounds in Sai?

  • OMFG THANK U!!! EVERYSINGLE VID THAT PEOPLE MAKE FOR HOW TO COLOR IN SAI DOESNT HELP ME IN LAYERS IN SAI!!!! EXCEPT DOR THIS ONE!!! :D

  • I drew something, inked it out and scanned it and tried using the layers, but I'm still coloring over the lines. I'm not really sure what to do O.o Do I just need to draw on an open canvas instead of scan? >.< I'm so confused.

  • @fashiondiva589 Ah, you'll have to set your coloring layers to multiply ^_^ For more information, you can refer to the info box. Hope it helps you! :D If you have further questions, feel free to message me!

  • @pinkmochix3 Oh whoa I got it. Thank you so much for your reply ^-^' I feel kind of slow because it was so simple lol .__.

  • @fashiondiva589 hi dear its easy, but what are u using i didnt understand, not masking right, selection? well to not colour over r drawing basic black lines u gotta hit the wand tool and select colour transparency at a lvl where it wont select the lines too :) then it will work or u multiply the lines while ure drawing, and put over everytyhing, that way theyll never be painted. But scanning sucks, it prob didnt want to select cuz of minimal color variations... u need a tablet wacom one lol asap

  • How did u make the paper that size? I want mine to be big and not leave gray

  • @Dudex58 When you open up a new file, just set it to a larger size (for example, 3000x3000 <--I'm just throwing out random numbers). If you don't want to leave the gray parts, then you can zoom in too ^_^

  • can you plz reply because I need a link for your Paint Tool Sai. don't seems. to trust other peoples links.Oh, and just got my Bamboo Tablet Pen 299x1 using windows instead. want computer company r U using I got windows

  • @ERICAD1313 try sai.detstwo.com. I am using windows as well ^_^

  • can you plz reply because I need a link for your Paint Tool Sai. don't seems. to trust other peoples links.

  • Thanks for the tutorial.

Could someone tell me what's the title of the 2nd & 3rd bgm? (o.o)

  • am still not get color after i put my color layer under and i set it to multiply it not work ekk

  • @sakuralioness If you're using the multiply technique, your coloring layer needs to be on top ^__^;;

  • @sakuralioness If you're using the multiply technique, your coloring layer needs to be on top ^__^;;

  • If you're using the multiply technique, your coloring layer needs to be on top of the lineart :)

  • @pinkmochix3 im desesperate, i know how to use layers and masking but lately ive been doing some marvel or whatever the hell anime super detailed drawings and i mask them before everything to paint them all later but i sometimes miss some pixel unselected that should be selected but then i have to delete the mask and do it all again and i prob forget something else. Is there a way of adding selection or deselection to the masking? omg please tell me how i cant find tutos or anything anywhere!

  • @jojosjuaninha If you look in your toolbox, there should be two little icons that say "select" and "deselect." :) You can use those, and deselect makes it easy to erase parts that you don't need, while select can add stuff that you missed.

  • @pinkmochix3 oh dear, thanks a lot for the reply but its not that, that i know how to use, i found out how to fix my problem! after straight 4 hours googling... answer is: select r folder mask, use pen or eraser to select or deselect hahahah T_T thats all there is to it! oh btw if u want check my DA page, i have some anime drawings its deviantart . jojosjuaninhas . com hahaha lol

But thanks a lot for the reply, really!!!

  • @pinkmochix3 its been a pain, please i rly need a quick reply !

  • where's the multiply button!? D:

  • i was wondering

why dont some people (including me) have some tools

the only ones i have are pencil , air brush, water color, brush , marker, eraser , selpen, selerase bucket, legacey pen , and blur :(

    why is that?!!

  • @sherbertpandainspace Those tools are only available on the 'normal' type layer. The 'pen/line/weight/pressure/curve' tools are available only on a 'linework' layer. Its the button right next to the 'new layer' button, that has a pen tip in it.

    Hope that helps. :)

  • may you please name the songs? :)

  • @Commenter866 first song is a piano cover of a song by YUKI - Fugainaiya. Thats the only one I recognize. :) Hope thats helpful.

  • can U have a nother background on the painted pic then i mean if U can take from your own pic and put it in the layer rade

  • thank you sooo much!! :D and what is the name of the song?? its so awesome!!

  • Thank youuu soooo muuch!! I was really confused with the layers. ><

  • Yes, your tutorial is helpful. Now I know how to deal with stuff directly drawn there, and with scanned stuff as well.

By the way, what's the song called?

  • how do you draw without a tablet?

  • Hello! I find this very

    useful! I still have a

    problem tho. When I made

    another layer fer colouring

and I started to colour and

when I used the layer for

    colouring, no colour

    comes out...

    Can U help out?

    Please and thank you!

  • @Tashina92 Make sure your coloring layer is under your lineart ^_^ if that doesn't work, try putting the coloring layer on top, but set the mode to "Multiply." Hope this helps! :)

  • @pinkmochix3 That helped alot. Mine did the same thing, so I put the 2nd layer to color on top instead of under and it worked fine. :) thanks so much for this tutorial! It really helped me.

  • @pinkmochix3 How do you make the coloring layer underneath the lineart? 'Cause whenever I try to color, it covers my lineart :(

  • @wangxinpan Sorry for the late reply! It seems I didn't receive it in my inbox D: To move it underneath, just drag it down ^_^ Or you can also set the coloring layer to multiply (and leave it on top of the lineart). <--This works when you are using scanned lineart rather than computer drawn lineart.

  • Comment removed

  • welll.....i figured out what I NEED to know so far owo to trace delete linart layer and trace over ty you helped

  • @ennishool

AH i'm so sorry for the late reply! D8 your comment didn't show up in my messages...

but, you can change the colors to the left side by going to window, and uncheck "show color and tool panel to right." :D hope this helped! and sorry for the late reply >_<

  • when you say about the colour part what was that box that came up cos it shows up fast not enough time to see what it was and my paint tool sai is a version 1 and a friend has it i asked her how to use it so she told me and i did what she said but it's not wirking when i use that wond thingy on it is turns the whole picture blue but it's not doing what i want it to and it's annoying >.<

  • @chelseah72

ehh i'm sorry, i'm not sure which part you're talking about... could you give me the time it showed up? :)

when you're using the wand, make sure your lineart layer is set to "selection source." then go back to your color layer and with the wand tool, click "selection source." it should work then ^_^

  • Oooooo What font did you use in the notepad?

  • @NamiNomiCupcakeStar its called LaCartoonerie ^_^ Hope this helps :)

  • when i put 2nd lyer under the 1st layer so it cant pass trough lineart, i started coloring and i didnt see anything.....what now?

  • @susakuchiha

make a layer for the colors, and put it ON TOP of the first layer, and set it to multiply ^_^ hope this helped! :)

  • can you use a mouse when drawing on paint tool sai or do you have to use a tablet?

  • @nyframeofmind

    of course you can! :)

the tablet is more convenient though, as it allows you to draw naturally (somewhat, haha) because it has a pen ^_^

however, the mouse does not have pressure settings D8

  • By 6.24 or somewhere there, do you mean that those who make a new layer for every colour/part, shade in NEW layers or in the same layers as the "original" colour layer? (Okay that maybe was confusing...: S)

And if the DO shade in separate layers, shall you put the shading layer under the "original" colour layer?... (I think that was even more confusing) If you don't understand wht I mena you don't have to answer ^^

  • @AkkefiaXBakku

that all depends on personal preference ^_^ you can make a new layer for everything, but you don't have to. if you shade in the "original" colour layer, (depending on what tool you use) it blends a lot better. however, you cant erase certain parts as easily D: if you DO shade in separate layers, put the shade layer on TOP of the original layer, otherwise it won't show up ^_^

    hope this helped! :D

  • @pinkmochix3

    Ah! Thank You very much~! : D

  • i love you

  • thanks so much! i was always quitting colouring the pictures cuz of the colour going over the lines and i was so confused with the layers Dx now im not :D

  • Amazing...this helped me A LTO.

And bTW, the music is awesome...whats its name...?!?!

  • wait.... so when coloring you put all the drag all the layers below the lineart right?... i kno that cuz my friend told me ;) but when i drag it down and try to color it doesnt show even if i set it to multiply... but when i drag the layer i just colored on back above the lineart, all the coloring i did appears, WHY IS THAT??!! HELP ME PLZ!!! D=>

  • @pichakyuu

when you're using multiply, the layer has to be on the top ^_^

the other method only works if you did your lineart on the computer.

  • OOOOO! Okay! Tyvm! :D

  • I didn't know that dragging a layer to the top of bottom of the list meant it would/wouldnt colour over certain parts. Thanks! :D

  • OH MY GOD YOU´RE SO CONFUSING!!!!!!!!! I DID EXACTLY WHAT U SAID BUT WHEN I TRY TO COLOR OVER THE NEW LAYER, THE COLOR IT´S NOT VISIBLE ONLY IN TEH FRST ONE >S

  • @cristilovespie

make a new layer, set it to multiply, and drag it to the top.

  • @pinkmochix3 Thanks ^^

  • Ok i gt the layers to work, but when i try colouring it, it only shows up on random parts of the picture, what do i do?

  • I made the layer dragged it underneath then coloured it still gose over my line art or dsent show up, and if it dosent show up on th line art and i click the layer its just a bunch of squiggles and i tried the mulitiply btton and putting it on top and bottom, same result.

  • lol, i had the same problem as xKCxProductionsx and i didnt understand ur answer XD what do u mean by setting the coloring layer multiply???

  • @TheOneAndOnlyZouza

XD umm well if you go to the layer box and click on the layer you want, (in this case its the one you'll be coloring on,) look above and there will be a drop down box that says mode: "normal." set it to multiply ^_^

  • damn... When i put the new layer under the lineart layer and try to color on the new layer... nothings happening. i cant se any color on the drawing, i can only see the color if i look there were the layer pictures are. and if i color on the linwart layer it just color over the lines -.-

  • @DeiMuffin

try making a new layer, dragging it to the top, and setting it to multiply ^_^

  • wow. this is a great tutorial! thanks it was very helpful.

  • I did what you did, & the color still goes over the lineart, & when i change it to the coloring layer, it shows nothing when i try to color.

  • When I dragged it down my colors wouldnt appear, I kept trying to draw but the colors didnt appear. Help me please please :(

  • im really confused beacuse i made the layer and i dragged it underneath. then i coloured and it didnt show on the lineart at all help? and i didnt click the eye thingy

  • @xKCxProductionsx try setting the coloring layer to multiply, then leave it on top of the lineart ^_^

  • Yaaay you had one on layers! :D

here comes another subscribe for you ^^

  • Where did u get this paint tool sai? :o

  • Which version of Paint is this? I think I have the old version xD you can't do layers or anything with it.

  • @hermionefan3 ahaha, this isn't paint XD this is SAI :)

  • @pinkmochix3

I was sleep-deprived when I read the title of this. XD I lack communication skills when I'm tired. P: (unfortunately, this includes understanding skills and reading skills LMAO)
