My new book on Goose's great 1978 Yankees team, The Greatest Comeback Ever, is the only book ever written by a fan, live-time on a great sports season. It's available at Amazon.
It would be nice to see more relief pitchers, particularly closers, who were more similar to Goose Gossage. Unfortunately, I don't see anybody in that role who can pitch roughly two-to-three innings in relief on a consistent basis.
Overall the group of players who become eligible next year is pretty weak, with only Rickey Henderson a shoe-in. Matt Williams had a nice career for a 3rd baseman, but his .268 average won't help his case. Mo Vaughn might have had a chance had injuries not cut his career short; he did win an MVP award in '95. So, if it's only Henderson among the new eligible players, maybe next year Jim Rice finally gets in.
Goose would come in the 7th with bases loaded o outs and throw nothing but heat. No cutter, no curveball, no change-up, strictly gas. He pitched more innings in a game than starters do in some games today. He also pitched 5-6 days in a row, never needed a rest, always ready. Today he would get 10 mil a year from anybody...
If you didn't see Goose Gossage stroll in from the bullpen (in the late 70s, early 80s) and shutdown...., scratch that, ...OBLITERATE the competition, ...then you have no idea what the word 'domination' means, when it comes to baseball.
Your grandfather is part of the classy old days of the sport. Even though he managed against the Yankees, he was well respected and I recall him being one of the best at strategy.
I've had the honor to watch both Goose (growing up) and Mariano on an everyday basis. Both are solid and true hall of famers, but Goose used to come in in the 7th inning with men on and no out, get out of it and finish the game. Nobody, nobody does that now.Goose rocked!! I grew up a Yankees fan, but always rooted for the Goose even with other teams. A true Yankee who got shafted all these years. It's about damn time!
gagne, K-Rod are great, but Goose is special. A living throwback. RIP Murcer.
Since Goose retired the save stat has been revised and it's much easier to obtain a save now than during Gossage's era and previous. I'd rather have Goose than Rivera, Gagne, K-Rod and others.
If ever in Colorado, make sure you stop at Goose's hamburger stand chain, Old School Burgers, best burgers east of In N Out which Goose based his chain on
Perhaps the greatest reliever ever, LU29 you are a joke.
Conrats Goose, well deserved, a class act, your comments re George, Thurman, Spencer, ChiChi and Bobby show why you were a beloved player and teammate.
Demolish the Hall of Fame and rebuild it as a National Baseball Museum. I'm from Cooperstown and I'm a huge baseball fan but the voting process ruins most of the enjoyment of the HoF by the fans.

Both Goose and Nettles belong to the Hall Of Fame ... I hope someday Nettles can do it.

Nettles isn't in the HOF? Hell, I am a Red Sox fan and even I think he deserves to be there.

@tvincent1978
His BA may have hurt his chance, had it been at least .020 higher he'd have better chance.
iamhungey12345 2 years ago
@ElMancoDelEspanto Nettles didn't have a very good lifetime Batting Average, in the .260's

So what about Mazerosky ? and many others .. please, he was the Ozzie Smith of the 3B's ... clutch hitter ..
rafy7777 1 year ago
@cbarrett34
.247 actually. If it's .260s he probably would have made it in.

The Yankees should retire #54 for Goose. And to be honest, I wouldn't oppose the Yankees retiring #1 a second time for Bobby Murcer.

The Goose is a class act. Not much more to say beyond that, and that he was a true workhorse relief pitcher and an intense competitor.
