"my favourite colour is gold" f--king love it! I remember seeing this interview when it was first aired on The New Music in Toronto. I taped it and watched it over and over cause "it's so goood"
Bring back the 80's I'm so sick of airbrushed, sanitised and over produced gibber from recent bands. The sad fact is that the JMC could never happen again, they wouldn't fit in with the record company's 'target demographic' or something.....
@krancioch Do you think they fitted back then? David Bowie single handedly ruined the 80s by releasing 'Let's Dance' then a fuck load of 'New Romantics' formed. They were what the record companies were releasing, not the JAMC. That's practically the exact same thing thats going on now, difference is no one gives a shit about Duran Duran now. But people do care about the Reids! Go check out No Age, you'll like them.
Didn't know this was on film! When things went mental the organisers closed the safety curtain as though that would calm things. The crowd pulled in down...

JAMC were an OK band who brought out a few good singles (and a great one in You Trip Me Up, imo) and a decent debut album. Especially compared to the dross of the early/mid 1980s.
But everything they say here just sounds so contrived/pretentious, like their attitude. And the fans interviewed just sound like sheep. Because the music press has told them JAMC were the next big thing, that's the only reason they were at the gig.
Well I didn't listen to JAMC because of the hype...I actually find them telling FUCK OFF to everyone, yeah they might be arrogant or pretentious twats but their primal music was needed to bring agressivity back again to Rock plus they never intended to be big or be "accesible"...I mean it is your opinion ti think so, that they were OK but I think they're great and I don't have to be fucking indie kid or a fuckinh hipster (I HATE FUCKING HIPSTERS) to listen to this band...I truly enjoy them
You want to see a truly great band from Scotland in the 1980s? (also with 2 brothers coincidentally) Then type the search terms NYAH FEARTIES DRUNKEN UNCLE into YouTube. Make the Mary Chain look like lightweights.
Jesus and Mary Chain weren't the wildest, I would rather give my money to Fugazi or At the Drive-In for that...but in relation to noise Nyah does win them but the ferties are closer to a disjointed post-punk band with semi-industrial beats than dark psychedelic pop-punk with background noise guitars, they're two different things
I knew Will Reid's daughter for a few months this year. Nice girl, but she would completely shut you off if you even mentioned the band. I don't blame her.
They really were sh*t live. I saw them twice first of as for the supposed violence a bunch of middle class art students having handbags at 10 paces did not constitue a row this was in the same period when UK Football firms where going toe to toe in Europe. Thier fan-base seemed to be made of Harrow punks who never had the a6rsehole to go to see Conflict, Exploited or GBH. Having said that Psychocandy is the bollox.
Haha! Stupid press The Jesus and Mary chain know how to deal with them. Just don't answer their questions properly and say "My favourite colour is gold" lol
They played shoddy 15 minute sets when they first made a reputation for being original, knowing that drunk folk would riot and it would get them more publicity. Later they started taking gigs more seriously.
Having said that, one of the times I saw them in Glasgow (in 87 or 88) Jim was so pissed he kicked the monitors off the stage then fell over. They carried him off and finished the set without him, then for the encore carried him back on, stood him at the microphone and slapped him.
LOL!!!! U made me laugh for hours!!!!! Thanks!!!! Thought we had plenty of Scottish men in America....ok....7th generation but they are there!!!!! Look around!!! Haaaaaaaaaaa!!!!
Anyway, me and my mate got in, couple of 16 yr olds, ended up in the midst of real some maniac punks.
Mayhem kicks off and we slink outside.
This cop is getting a battering from three punks. Ends up is sitting on the the ground bleeding, looking freaked out as people run from police reinforcements. Riot city.
My mate walks up to him, all casual, taps him on the shoulder, asks, "Excuse me while you're busy, officer, but is the show over?".
I first saw The Jesus & Mary Chain when I was 15 in 1988. It was my first gig ever. it blew me away, I couldn't hear for 3 days afterwards, it was the most exciting night of my life. 20 years on I'll be seeing them again March 2008 in Melbourne. Can't wait!
I liked Jesus & The Mary Chain. I bought their records & went to see the shows. They're a minimalist copy of The Velvet Underground for teenagers, with The Sex Pistols attitude thrown in. When I saw them there was a lot of pushing, girls fainted, others risked being trampled underfoot. Every other person on stage would have stopped & said 'Hold on'. Jim, the singer, instead kept going, enjoying the fact that people could have died at his feet. & once I saw him shopping with his mum too.
"Because we're so good. Because we're so much better than everybody else. Because so many other people are complete rubbish that people have got to pay attention to us, it's pretty obvious really." Awesome. So fucking awesome.
yes, it has, what can save it, perhaps 2 chords in the right hands...there is hope...punk r n roll, whatever u call it . it will not die, always there will be under equipped impatiant talents ready to break out... but the horrors r not the new mary chain,

I was at this show - it was a fucking blast. I'd taken two microdots, stood at the back with my mate Astral and let it all just play out in front of me - one of the best movies I've seen.
I was backstage trying to interview them forf my little fanzine, but ot pissed instead with Meat Whiplash and went out the front after it all kicked off- speakers and shit flying towards me till I was dragged away for my own safety. Not a scratch, then getting tube back and some NME journalist punches me! Wierdness.
How can u say that Johnny rotten is a clown!! Without the pistols punk probably wouldn't be around!! They are one of the most influential bands ever! and although Oasis might not be the greatest they fuckin rock!!! so go fuck urself!
You don't know jack shit about punk music if you consider its existence completely based on the sex pistols. So many bands were doing the punk sound wayyyyy before them and were doing it a shitload better. What about Bad Brains? They, are who you should really reconsider as the main strong influence of the punk sound and culture.
I don't agree any one band 'created' Punk rock. I feel The Ramones are the spine, the main trunk of the tree with all these other things branching off. But they were a bunch of Stooges fans - the roots; who, in turn were a bunch of Velvet Underground fans.
My opinion is this: The Jesus and Mary Chain did have some fucking amazing music that has influenced many really great bands. Honestly, the list of people who have been influenced by these guys in one way shape or form is tremendous. But on the other hand, there is some of their stuff that I find just unlistenable. I really do. But nonetheless, one of the most important bands of the last 30 years, up there with the Sex Pistols for sure.
The guy doing the interview is Daniel Richler, son of the late novelist Mordechai Richler. I have this on VHS tape myself - taped it during its original broadcast on the TV show "The New Music" 22 years back - and was going to post it eventually. Glad to see someone's done it!
Been looking for this for while. Saw it as a kid when it originally aired on the New Music. Made a big impression althoug it wasn't until Automatic that really heard them for a few years it was just this clip burned in my head.
When came out, their album was BIG!! A couple later people got sick of them and relized they could only make noise and that was it. Plus they were pretenuos as all hell. They thought they were gods gift to Earth. Funny footage
i agree with below. this footage is amazing. i never thought i'd actually get to see it. i first started listening to JAMC when automatic came out so, was born a tad too late for the psychocandy years.
I love TJAMC, but when those fans are asked why they're good, they go 'because they're loud'. Idiots. Why not answer 'because they write good songs'? If you want volume, stand next to a jet engine.
this footage is fucking brilliant, is there anymore? id heard about this incident but never thought id see it. JAMC are the fucking coolest band ever and it was their different ideas that made them so good. if you think they're shit youre missing the point.
I never understand why it seems necessary for most rock/indie/punk bands to go through this insufferable 'wanker' phase, which is always dubbed as having 'attitude'. They are just using the moment to be complete tossers, obviously revelling in the tension created, despite Bobby Gillespies facetious little comment at the end. Its a shame, because these guys obviously could play extremely well. I suppose its just that little adolescent stage most bands go through...
My theory is that a lot of bands start out angry because no-one has been listening to them and they know they are good, then when they know people are listening they calm down and start being creative
How fuckin awesome were these blokes

My opinion is this: The Jesus and Mary Chain did have some fucking amazing music that has influenced many really great bands. Honestly, the list of people who have been influenced by these guys in one way shape or form is tremendous. But on the other hand, there is some of their stuff that I find just unlistenable. I really do. But nonetheless, one of the most important bands of the last 30 years, up there with the Sex Pistols for sure.

These dudes kill the Sex Pistols. Jim Reid's not a clown, Johnny Rotten is.
But yeah, JAMC have maybe 3 or 4 songs I don't care for, but thats still like 615 songs that blow me away. Not too bad of a ratio.

What channel was this shown on? The TV announcer sounds American.

it's Canada; no US network would've given them this much airtime.

When came out, their album was BIG!! A couple later people got sick of them and relized they could only make noise and that was it. Plus they were pretenuos as all hell. They thought they were gods gift to Earth. Funny footage

i agree with below. this footage is amazing. i never thought i'd actually get to see it. i first started listening to JAMC when automatic came out so, was born a tad too late for the psychocandy years.
thanks for sharing this video. :)

I love TJAMC, but when those fans are asked why they're good, they go 'because they're loud'. Idiots. Why not answer 'because they write good songs'? If you want volume, stand next to a jet engine.

agree and your comment made me laughing! great!

this footage is fucking brilliant, is there anymore? id heard about this incident but never thought id see it. JAMC are the fucking coolest band ever and it was their different ideas that made them so good. if you think they're shit youre missing the point.

I saw them at Camden Ballroom in England in '86, and I saw them last night in NYC at Webster Hall. They were terrible then and they are terrible now.

BelatedCommiseration 4 years ago
My theory is that a lot of bands start out angry because no-one has been listening to them and they know they are good, then when they know people are listening they calm down and start being creative
dodmurray 4 years ago
Oasis don't do that. They are just wankers generally.
