  • How fuckin awesome were these blokes

  • These guys changed my life in the 80s. The 80s ruled. Never a better time for new bands and diverse music.

  • " cause the picked the presidents pocket on the first visit..."

    hahaha...good stuff

  • soo cool

  • What a fucking brillant band!! Better than all these other fuckin crappy bands!!!

  • now that's a fuckin' show... the band was ok too

  • Good to see so many comments on this video, I'm sure they'd appreciate the feedback!! (See what I did there?) Ha ha :-)

  • everyone of those guys are hawt!

  • That's the first sensible thing I've ever heard Bobby Gillespie say...

  • Bobby Gillespie looks about 13 years old here.

  • I remember seeing the at the UEA in Norwich... Feeling old now, still Stiff Little Fingers on the 31st

  • Bad, ass.

  • "My Guitar's for kicking"...lol...awwwwww!

  • I have a shirt my dad got at one of their gigs in the 80's; it says in big red letters, "Jesus FUCK" Its definitely my favorite shirt.

  • @HighOnFire19 your dad is fucking cool =)

  • Love the Scottish accent...

  • scottish Accent! very cool!

  • The Jesus and Mary Chain f++king rock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talk about ahead of their time.... damn

wish this video was better quality

  • the best

  • Was this where they came on about 1am, played for about 10 minutes and fucked off again? I saw them do something similar a couple of times and didn't see the funny side either.

  • ROTFLMFAO....."my favourite colour is gold" where the fuck did that come from. William is the best !

  • I love the interview with them at around 3 mins, classic!

  • this is the best interview segment i have ever saw

  • where can i find those sunglasses?!

  • @Get2TheDeLorean

    never

    i have this sunglasses

  • Whatever happened to Bobby Gillespie?

  • Primal Scream

  • @strummerino Still gigs with the Primal Scream, did a couple of fine ecstasy era anthems with Weatherall at the mix 20 years ago and still looks like the worst image of heroin addict You can see on the anti-drug campaigns.

  • @sjtToo I saw them a couple of weeks back, He looked remarkably alright actualy! god to see.

  • my favorite colour is gold hahahahahhahaha

  • Everybody asked... But it seems that nobody answered. What's the song they're playing at 0:05 to 0:31 ?

If ANYONE KNOWS please spend 5 seconds of your life and tell us.

  • @Rosielstpme

    it's Jesus sucks

  • If all the lewds at 0:32 appreciate of such brilliance is that "they're noisy!", they're really listening to the wrong band.

  • "my favourite colour is gold" f--king love it! I remember seeing this interview when it was first aired on The New Music in Toronto. I taped it and watched it over and over cause "it's so goood"

  • I love the way he says "rubbish".

  • ppl climbing in through window... lulz

  • Bring back the 80's I'm so sick of airbrushed, sanitised and over produced gibber from recent bands. The sad fact is that the JMC could never happen again, they wouldn't fit in with the record company's 'target demographic' or something.....

    Sad sad world.

  • @krancioch They could happen again, just not in the mainstream

  • @krancioch Do you think they fitted back then? David Bowie single handedly ruined the 80s by releasing 'Let's Dance' then a fuck load of 'New Romantics' formed. They were what the record companies were releasing, not the JAMC. That's practically the exact same thing thats going on now, difference is no one gives a shit about Duran Duran now. But people do care about the Reids! Go check out No Age, you'll like them.

  • @krancioch The 80s had alot of shit music as well though

  • Didn't know this was on film! When things went mental the organisers closed the safety curtain as though that would calm things. The crowd pulled in down...

  • no worries. I've had a good run.

  • Hilarious interview from a legendary era. Excellent upload.

  • he goes to parties and says "watch this" and then he tunes his guitar...hahahaha

  • One of my favourite New Music interviews!! WOW!! High School memories!!

  • Love a good Poly Riot!!!

  • they're noisey!

  • 1:15 *sigh*

  • hahhaha he's so deep

  • i remember this show. the new music. toronto always loved this band

  • Is there something wrong with this video or am I having a seizure?

  • you're funny

  • Scarey stuff for students.

  • Sensoriexpansion69 you are a cock sucker!

  • Didn't Suicide already do this shit back in the early 70's? same act, different band. Both good, nontheless.

The pretentious "we rock, you don't piss off" is pretty weak. Every group does it when the start out. I don't care for their opinions, attitudes that's not why i buy the music. you want that, go suck on duran duran

  • I was with you 'til you took a swing at Duran Duran.........

  • amazing

  • Pair of prententious twats, but they were a fantastic band.

  • haha "give two more strings and youll just confuse the guy."

  • My favorite color is gold

  • i wish i couldve seen them at a show like this

  • Well I didn't listen to JAMC because of the hype...I actually find them telling FUCK OFF to everyone, yeah they might be arrogant or pretentious twats but their primal music was needed to bring agressivity back again to Rock plus they never intended to be big or be "accesible"...I mean it is your opinion ti think so, that they were OK but I think they're great and I don't have to be fucking indie kid or a fuckinh hipster (I HATE FUCKING HIPSTERS) to listen to this band...I truly enjoy them

  • You want to see a truly great band from Scotland in the 1980s? (also with 2 brothers coincidentally) Then type the search terms NYAH FEARTIES DRUNKEN UNCLE into YouTube. Make the Mary Chain look like lightweights.

  • Jesus and Mary Chain weren't the wildest, I would rather give my money to Fugazi or At the Drive-In for that...but in relation to noise Nyah does win them but the ferties are closer to a disjointed post-punk band with semi-industrial beats than dark psychedelic pop-punk with background noise guitars, they're two different things

  • Agreed.

  • What does that actually mean? There are lots of twins and brothers all over the world.

  • HA!!!

  • yeah ...

    gold is my favourite col

    our

  • "We're so good. We're so much better than everyone else."

  • the camera is really fucking annoying

  • bei tempi.

  • absolute genius...what band today would try and pull such a stunt? not the fucking horrors or scum or any of that shit thats for sure

  • pwn

  • I knew Will Reid's daughter for a few months this year. Nice girl, but she would completely shut you off if you even mentioned the band. I don't blame her.

  • this is music history!

    maybe, i dunno

  • same old same old

  • my new favourite band!!!!!!!!!

  • the history of the best rock and roll

was so much better que nirvana

  • Para de usar Google Translate. =P

  • didnt even understand a single word whe they were talking. fckin slang ;)

  • HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH at 3.35 you can see the man the world need to change ahahhaahhaha

  • whizz?

  • They really were sh*t live. I saw them twice first of as for the supposed violence a bunch of middle class art students having handbags at 10 paces did not constitue a row this was in the same period when UK Football firms where going toe to toe in Europe. Thier fan-base seemed to be made of Harrow punks who never had the a6rsehole to go to see Conflict, Exploited or GBH. Having said that Psychocandy is the bollox.

  • feel better now?

  • Indeed.....thank you

  • lol! i love the bass explanation! :)

  • yass mon the chain man im from east kilbride maself and dont worry ma band kicks ass too

  • Ahhh ... wee little Bobby Gillespie right at the end there. Whatever happened to him ?

  • Fifty bucks says the Reid bros. are actually two of the nicest guys you could meet.

  • man that was a awsome interview, fuckin' hilarious

  • There are no more bands like this one nowadays...they kicked ass, had attitude and were honest.

  • i'm a scottish man!

  • Haha! Stupid press The Jesus and Mary chain know how to deal with them. Just don't answer their questions properly and say "My favourite colour is gold" lol

  • Hilarious interview there

  • can anyone say 'Role Models'?

  • what song is that they are playing at the start

  • It was awesome seeing them live a few months ago when they toured Australia.

One of the bands that kept me sane when I was a teenager!

  • They played shoddy 15 minute sets when they first made a reputation for being original, knowing that drunk folk would riot and it would get them more publicity. Later they started taking gigs more seriously.

Having said that, one of the times I saw them in Glasgow (in 87 or 88) Jim was so pissed he kicked the monitors off the stage then fell over. They carried him off and finished the set without him, then for the encore carried him back on, stood him at the microphone and slapped him.

  • Scottish men are gorgeous. We need more Scottish men in America.

  • LOL!!!! U made me laugh for hours!!!!! Thanks!!!! Thought we had plenty of Scottish men in America....ok....7th generation but they are there!!!!! Look around!!! Haaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

  • straight up

  • COOL AS FUCK

  • slipknot are gays

  • slipknot are gay. nothing but kiss and korn put together. too bad my generation is too stupid to realize that.

  • Brilliant. The most important band of the 80's, really shook things up. And they still sound great !

  • Sod being a roadie for JAMC!

  • March 15th 1985, think it was a Thursday.

Anyway, me and my mate got in, couple of 16 yr olds, ended up in the midst of real some maniac punks.

Mayhem kicks off and we slink outside.

This cop is getting a battering from three punks. Ends up is sitting on the the ground bleeding, looking freaked out as people run from police reinforcements. Riot city.

My mate walks up to him, all casual, taps him on the shoulder, asks, "Excuse me while you're busy, officer, but is the show over?".

    Memories.

  • Fookin" brill..................!

  • Genuis! Hilarious! They were so brilliantly arrogant/realistic, "Introduce another couple of strings and you confuse the guy" HAHA

  • I first saw The Jesus & Mary Chain when I was 15 in 1988. It was my first gig ever. it blew me away, I couldn't hear for 3 days afterwards, it was the most exciting night of my life. 20 years on I'll be seeing them again March 2008 in Melbourne. Can't wait!

  • the crowd are a bunch of dumbasses.

  • I liked Jesus & The Mary Chain. I bought their records & went to see the shows. They're a minimalist copy of The Velvet Underground for teenagers, with The Sex Pistols attitude thrown in. When I saw them there was a lot of pushing, girls fainted, others risked being trampled underfoot. Every other person on stage would have stopped & said 'Hold on'. Jim, the singer, instead kept going, enjoying the fact that people could have died at his feet. & once I saw him shopping with his mum too.

  • "Because we're so good. Because we're so much better than everybody else. Because so many other people are complete rubbish that people have got to pay attention to us, it's pretty obvious really." Awesome. So fucking awesome.

  • Amazing band, they are CAN made as commerical as possible...BRillant

  • Slightly less gay than you

  • nice one haha, JAMC forever

  • they werent punk..punk was a pair of trousers in london .. they invented their own thing .. influenced by many many things not just rock n roll

  • 'Two strings is enough. It's adequate'.

    Rock'n'roll's been downhill ever since.

  • yes, it has, what can save it, perhaps 2 chords in the right hands...there is hope...punk r n roll, whatever u call it . it will not die, always there will be under equipped impatiant talents ready to break out... but the horrors r not the new mary chain,

does it seem people don't do lyrics anymore.. brmc was a big let down, often i just kick back with some slow dj music or style council with some beefeater, i won't be the guy to kick it in back in gear.

  • this full episode of the New Music is available on Canadian (where its from (much music program featuring the uk music scene)) Rogers Cable on Demand. Really good episode.

  • I was at this show - it was a fucking blast. I'd taken two microdots, stood at the back with my mate Astral and let it all just play out in front of me - one of the best movies I've seen.

  • I was backstage trying to interview them forf my little fanzine, but ot pissed instead with Meat Whiplash and went out the front after it all kicked off- speakers and shit flying towards me till I was dragged away for my own safety. Not a scratch, then getting tube back and some NME journalist punches me! Wierdness.

  • btw, "I'd taken two microdots, stood at the back with my mate Astral" is one of the greatest things ever written on Youtube comments

  • Thanks mate.

    Nel

  • How can u say that Johnny rotten is a clown!! Without the pistols punk probably wouldn't be around!! They are one of the most influential bands ever! and although Oasis might not be the greatest they fuckin rock!!! so go fuck urself!

  • You don't know jack shit about punk music if you consider its existence completely based on the sex pistols. So many bands were doing the punk sound wayyyyy before them and were doing it a shitload better. What about Bad Brains? They, are who you should really reconsider as the main strong influence of the punk sound and culture.

  • What about The Saints (I'm Stranded) or The Monks before them?? or even Link Wray.. piercing your speaker cone with a pencil is pretty punk!

  • I mean.....if you go far back enough people were making sounds that can be defined as "punk" since the late 50s to early 60's.

  • "Without the pistols punk probably wouldn't be around!!"

    you mean The Ramones.

  • I don't agree any one band 'created' Punk rock. I feel The Ramones are the spine, the main trunk of the tree with all these other things branching off. But they were a bunch of Stooges fans - the roots; who, in turn were a bunch of Velvet Underground fans.

  • 'Give hin another couple of strings and you confuse the guy'

'My guitar is out of tune'

    Iconic. Fuck music. Play tunes.

  • They were that fukin good. Period.

  • i argee with the man who said johnny rotten is a clown he fucking is up the jamc

  • "the other people is rubbish..."

i love that scottish accent, it's so fuckin' under!

  • It was March 15th 1985. I was there.

  • My guitar is for kicking - classic

  • Oh man i remember seeing this on TV. Classic!

  • 1985 :).....Nice to meet you all...I'm Koky from Peru and it's great there are still JAMC's music lovers ;)...cheers!

  • 1985 :).....Nice to meet you all...I'm Koky from Peru and it's great there are still JAMC's music lovers ;)...cheers!

  • What year was this?

  • My opinion is this: The Jesus and Mary Chain did have some fucking amazing music that has influenced many really great bands. Honestly, the list of people who have been influenced by these guys in one way shape or form is tremendous. But on the other hand, there is some of their stuff that I find just unlistenable. I really do. But nonetheless, one of the most important bands of the last 30 years, up there with the Sex Pistols for sure.

  • These dudes kill the Sex Pistols. Jim Reid's not a clown, Johnny Rotten is.

But yeah, JAMC have maybe 3 or 4 songs I don't care for, but thats still like 615 songs that blow me away. Not too bad of a ratio.

  • brilliant stuff.

  • rubbish ..geezer us talking out his ring piece..

  • The guy doing the interview is Daniel Richler, son of the late novelist Mordechai Richler. I have this on VHS tape myself - taped it during its original broadcast on the TV show "The New Music" 22 years back - and was going to post it eventually. Glad to see someone's done it!

  • Been looking for this for while. Saw it as a kid when it originally aired on the New Music. Made a big impression althoug it wasn't until Automatic that really heard them for a few years it was just this clip burned in my head.

  • I love the attitude and the noise, brilliant!

  • ...do you remember the JAMC

  • i was there, my ears are still ringing!

  • "my guitars completely out of tune, 'cause its just for kickin, but he's is in tune"

  • What channel was this shown on? The TV announcer sounds American.

  • it's Canada; no US network would've given them this much airtime.

  • this is awesome!

  • When came out, their album was BIG!! A couple later people got sick of them and relized they could only make noise and that was it. Plus they were pretenuos as all hell. They thought they were gods gift to Earth. Funny footage

  • jim's right......they are better than anybody else.....he tells it like it is....

  • JAMCH is one of the greates bands ever!!!....one of my fave acts. the album Pshicocandy (1985)is excelent and influential.

VELVET UNDERGROUND + BEACH BOYS + SUICIDE + SEX PISTOLS + THE CURE

  • THE CURE NO

  • They still are better then everyone else.

  • i agree with below. this footage is amazing. i never thought i'd actually get to see it. i first started listening to JAMC when automatic came out so, was born a tad too late for the psychocandy years.

thanks for sharing this video. :)

  • I love TJAMC, but when those fans are asked why they're good, they go 'because they're loud'. Idiots. Why not answer 'because they write good songs'? If you want volume, stand next to a jet engine.

  • agree and your comment made me laughing! great!

  • this footage is fucking brilliant, is there anymore? id heard about this incident but never thought id see it. JAMC are the fucking coolest band ever and it was their different ideas that made them so good. if you think they're shit youre missing the point.

  • I saw them at Camden Ballroom in England in '86, and I saw them last night in NYC at Webster Hall. They were terrible then and they are terrible now.

  • why?

  • Does that make you a masochist?

  • I never understand why it seems necessary for most rock/indie/punk bands to go through this insufferable 'wanker' phase, which is always dubbed as having 'attitude'. They are just using the moment to be complete tossers, obviously revelling in the tension created, despite Bobby Gillespies facetious little comment at the end. Its a shame, because these guys obviously could play extremely well. I suppose its just that little adolescent stage most bands go through...

  • My theory is that a lot of bands start out angry because no-one has been listening to them and they know they are good, then when they know people are listening they calm down and start being creative

  • Oasis don't do that. They are just wankers generally.

  • OASIS IS SHEET

  • Yes :)

  • They were like oasis with brains they were robbed of mega stardom by the times still they have quiet soft lyting east kilbride accents

  • ha great!
