The Dutch brought "Sinter Klaas" (Santa Claus) too Amerika. In the Netherlands its still celibrated on december 5th, the eve of St. Nicks birthday. In the evening the Dutch children get presents, brought by sinterklaas.

The people of the Church did not know the exact day of Jesus so they choose the 25th to observe it. It also has nothing to do with the Solisice. The two holidays for consideration were Yule, a Nordic holiday devoted to life, and Sol Invictus, a Roman holiday to the sun god. The Roman holiday was chosen because it was more popular. This was a common practice.

And it's the Saturnalia, which is dedicated to the roman god Saturn.

You're probably right about the exact holiday. I know more about tribal than Roman culture. I think I was more trying to say the "Jesus was born on Christmas" was more of a myth. The Church never said he was after all. They just observed it then. Thank you for the information.

Everyone needs to calm down with this post. The genocide in Turkey was a horrible event but all nations have had terror and death. Millions of Native Americans died in America, the Ekronians were butchered by the Jews in Israel, the Holocaust in Germany, the Holocaust of the Chinese during WW2 and too many more to mention to single out the Turks is to ignore all other suffering. They did terrible things but many have we have to look at people as individuals not as masses.

Turkey is a horrible country, not only did they commit genocide on their own people without ever being punished. Did you know that in Turkey you can be arrested for Treason for insulting or otherwise making the Turkish government look bad or embarrassed.
