  • wtf is with this subtitles, english is my third language only but i understand this perfectly.. seems patronizing to me (ohh, he's got a scottish accent, we need subtitles, screw that!)

  • I despair for good history. This starts off so well, but then descends into the all to familiar: ach the North too Britains were too feirce to deal with... Rubbish: tell that to the legions facing the Partians for one. The fact was that Britain was not that important; in particula the north Read some decent historians about this: David Breeze: Lloyd Laing: Gordon Maxwell:. Hadrain's wall defined a frontier, but the Romans had a system of forts and fortlets, plus alliances well beyond this.

  • Dr Oliver said 20 years later but the subtitles said 15 years later, apart from that error the subtittles are fine

  • Excellent series - wish there was a similar one for England. Watched the whole series and loved it - even if I am English ha ha. How come there is nothing as well done for England. Whoever made this then please make the same for England.

  • I AM NOT IN THE UK but i love my homeland BEAUTIFUL SCOTLAND

  • Thank you for the subtitles....

  • @97kcoats piss off, unionist scum

  • Tickled that this has subtitles.

  • The progarm states that the Caledonians held the Romans at bay for 3 centuries. What about the great punitive expedition into Caledonia in the late 2nd Century, led by the Roman emperor, Septimius Severus.

  • dont like this northern britain thing at all!!

    northern britain=northern england

    MUCH PREFER SCOTLAND!!

scottish not british IN ANY WAY!!

    independence 2010!!!

  • Here here :D I agree

    - Independent Saltire

For an Independent & Prosperous Scotland

  • Sctoland will become a republic?

  • ALBA GU BRATH!!!

    ! SCOTLAND FOREVER !

  • I think the "speech" from Calgacus might be more than a little made up for this program. It sounds a bit too Shakespearean to be 2000 years old. Besides unless theres an actual written record of his speech then itd be speculative.

  • there is, the romans wrote it though, so that the enemy they were facing would seem more epic.

  • @philster61 As he was saying it, I thought this shows too much knowledge of the Romans. The last of the free signifies that this is the last part of the world not conquered by the Romans - I suppose someone could have believed that then. However it is a stunning admission for a Roman writer!

  • shouldn't that be welsh history if they spook welsh and so they did, as far north as Edinburgh at time. there are welsh poems from that time and from the north

Y Gododdin it also known as the protagonists

  • He said a langauge SIMILAR to Welsh - its now extinct, Welsh isnt. durr

  • Mmm! similar is the keyword here durr. Brythonic languages like cumbric had a lot in common with even modern welsh unlike Goidelic languages don't.

yes cumbric is extinct But. just enough was left to know. words like Brythonic , a welsh word meaning indigenous Briton as opposed to Gael meaning Scoti an irish word. from the word Goídel; wild person. what Neil Oliver should of said was if calgacus did exist he would,nt of spoken Gàidhlig. so there you go durr.

  • SAOR ALBA

  • almost all of history .....is written by the victors and the powerful

  • why is this subtitled? its not as if he is speaking a foreign language !!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • our accents can be hard for outsiders to understand?

  • I like the way Tcitus has a scottisch accent aswell ; )

  • sorry i meant only an excuse

  • i love how this needs to be subtitled

have you seen the mock the week spoof of this? hilarious

  • gah, love the accent!

  • I dont see myself as british only scotish

  • what good is a nation if its not united?

  • The view of the people that support Scottish independence is that the UK is not a nation but a state, like the EU .. and Scotland is its own seperate nation and westminister should have no say on how the country is ran.

not my point of view but theirs, and it seems to be growing, all over the UK ... even in England more and more people are talking about seperation of the "union" i don't see how it benefits anybody though to be honest.

  • on their own, england, scotland, wales and ireland havent achieved anything noteworthy....but as Great Britain, we have made the modern world

separatism is the spawn of brain dead soccer hooligans and can be directly drawn to that

me being scottish, i have no problem with GB or EU...both let me travel freely, give me freedoms to work and live wherever i please...also on their own, Britain's factions could never sourvive...."you can break one twig, but you cant break a bundle"

  • you're scottish aswell? where abouts?

  • hail from Edinborough, now live abroad

  • free to travel why pay road tax ? free to work why pay tax ? you aint free to do shit !!! WAKE UP !

  • are you realy such a hopeless penny pincher? dont help propagating that myth about scotsmen

  • i am scottish !! there s no way that we are free !

having to pay is not free !

  • what are you a bum aswell?

  • Ignorance is the state in which one lacks knowledge, is unaware of something or chooses to subjectively ignore information. This should not be confused with being unintelligent, as one's level of intelligence and level of education or general awareness are not the same. The word "Ignorant" is an adjective describing a person in the state of being unaware. The term may be used specifically (One can be an expert in math, and totally ignorant of history)

    i work for myself thanks

  • you dont pay anything when crossing EU borders you tit...and you certainly dont have to pay to work, what are you 12?

  • road tax is a normal tax in any country...its what finances the maintanance of roads...do you think roads came about thousands of years ago on their own and connected the place up?

    take a seat you ninny
