wtf is with this subtitles, english is my third language only but i understand this perfectly.. seems patronizing to me (ohh, he's got a scottish accent, we need subtitles, screw that!)
I despair for good history. This starts off so well, but then descends into the all to familiar: ach the North too Britains were too feirce to deal with... Rubbish: tell that to the legions facing the Partians for one. The fact was that Britain was not that important; in particula the north Read some decent historians about this: David Breeze: Lloyd Laing: Gordon Maxwell:. Hadrain's wall defined a frontier, but the Romans had a system of forts and fortlets, plus alliances well beyond this.
Excellent series - wish there was a similar one for England. Watched the whole series (1,2,3,4,5) and loved it - even if I am English ha ha. How come there is nothing as well done for England. Whoever made this then please make the same for England.

The progarm states that the Caledonians held the Romans at bay for 3 centuries. What about the great punitive expedition into Caledonia in the late 2nd Century, led by the Roman emperor, Septimius Severus.
I think the "speech" from Calgacus might be more than a little made up for this program. It sounds a bit too Shakespearean to be 2000 years old. Besides unless theres an actual written record of his speech then itd be speculative.
@philster61 As he was saying it, I thought this shows too much knowledge of the Romans. The last of the free signifies that this is the last part of the world not conquered by the Romans - I suppose someone could have believed that then. However it is a stunning admission for a Roman writer!
shouldn't that be welsh history if they spook welsh and so they did, as far north as Edinburgh at time. there are welsh poems from that time and from the north
Mmm! similar is the keyword here durr. Brythonic languages like cumbric had a lot in common with even modern welsh unlike Goidelic languages don't.
yes cumbric is extinct But. just enough was left to know. words like Brythonic , a welsh word meaning indigenous Briton as opposed to Gael meaning Scoti an irish word. from the word Goídel; wild person. what Neil Oliver should of said was if calgacus did exist he would,nt of spoken Gàidhlig. so there you go durr.
The view of the people that support Scottish independence is that the UK is not a nation but a state, like the EU .. and Scotland is its own seperate nation and westminister should have no say on how the country is ran.
not my point of view but theirs, and it seems to be growing, all over the UK ... even in England more and more people are talking about seperation of the "union" i don't see how it benefits anybody though to be honest.
on their own, england, scotland, wales and ireland havent achieved anything noteworthy....but as Great Britain, we have made the modern world
separatism is the spawn of brain dead soccer hooligans and can be directly drawn to that
me being scottish, i have no problem with GB or EU...both let me travel freely, give me freedoms to work and live wherever i please...also on their own, Britain's factions could never sourvive...."you can break one twig, but you cant break a bundle"
Ignorance is the state in which one lacks knowledge, is unaware of something or chooses to subjectively ignore information. This should not be confused with being unintelligent, as one's level of intelligence and level of education or general awareness are not the same. The word "Ignorant" is an adjective describing a person in the state of being unaware. The term may be used specifically (One can be an expert in math, and totally ignorant of history)
road tax is a normal tax in any country...its what finances the maintanance of roads...do you think roads came about thousands of years ago on their own and connected the place up?
Thanks for uploading. It's great to finally see a programme like this about Scotland's history. Looking forward to the episode about Robert the Bruce and the wars of independance

Dr Oliver said 20 years later but the subtitles said 15 years later, apart from that error the subtittles are fine

there is, the romans wrote it though, so that the enemy they were facing would seem more epic.
