Only the tune got better for one more Bond film but "You only live twice" is where they lost it IMHO: an unconvincing comic villain, Connery's wig and 007 married made for an unlikely plot. Connery redeemed himself in Diamonds but the rot had set in: Lazenby saw that and got out. An appalling series of films about a secret agent who gets younger and younger foiling despots (none of whom were convincing after Largo - Frome was the best and Sanchez was a welcome surprise in Licensed to kill)
@mgwilliams - I'm your dog. It only took me two years to figure out how to turn on your computer and figure out your password to tell you what I've been trying to tell you when I wag my tail - YOU'RE SINGING OFF KEY!!!
How can you NOT like any Bond film intro? Had my sister-inlaw drive me to the old theater downtown to see Goldfinger when I was 8 years old, she thought I was nuts. I'm old now, pittle around my house and sing the Bond "theme" to my dogs early in the AM when I get them going.... were going to rescue the world..... their tails wag, I'm sure they think I'm nuts too.
I always thought it was a stupid title untill i listened to the lyrics. Its true everyone has two lives, the shitty reality and the blind hope that you cling onto.
@shatterdwing the title also comes just from the fact that everyone thinks that James is dead, then when no.1 finds him he says "you only live twice Mr. Bond"
Why not allow embedding? If you are John Barry, rest in peace, Lewis Gilbert, Sean or Don, I can understand. But c'mon. You grabbed it from a DVD. I love when people rip things from others then pretend they own it.
So, this is a cover of Robbie Williams then? (Dear internet: this is a joke.) P.S. Dear America: You have no idea who Robbie Williams is. You lucky, lucky bastards.
@TheKenfig I did add 'fwiw', so whatever dude. Feel free to continue to make statements then be rude when others disagree. Great way to live. And for the record, no, I mean Roger Moore when he was in The Saint (not his type) as to appear in the film adaptations. The real 'model' for Bond, Dunderdale, looked nothing like either Connery or Moore.
@humbleradio Know the saying ; not seen it in it's initials before. Anyway, what I'm saying is Fleming wrote the novels even before the Saint, which started in 62 as well as the Bond movies
@TheKenfig Yes, he wrote them in the 50s after 'retirement' at Goldeneye. The Saint started in '60 aired from '61 at the same time as Doctor No in '62. Connery was already cast, obviously and the novels were mostly written as well. But Fleming saw Moore and continued to write and envision his created character as seen in Moore.
This was the first song I ever heard of James Bond and then it was the first Bond film I had ever seen. I was only 11 years old and the rest is history...;-)
The first James Bond movie I saw was Dr. No, but the theme song for this one is better (Dr. No just used the Bond theme). Some of my other favorite Bond movie themes would be From Russia With Love, The World is Not Enough, Thunderball, and Live and Let Die (you usually can't go wrong with Paul Mcartney).
@sakakitohru I gather the volcanic scenes are based on interior shots of Mt. Sakurajima. I've got a little book, I've got a little book. About such things which are unofficial, from times of old. Times of old which are unspoken of. Times of old in which those weary of life. Those of every walk and station. Came to Sakurajima to end their lives. And carpet the caldera with their bodies. I've got a little book, I've got an old book. Which talks about things now unspoken...
Thanks for sendimng me a reply, its just that I like good listening songs at times. This is one and so is the theme to "To Sir With Love. reply to me again, I like getting them.
nobody did a better theme song than sinatra othetr than Bassey. but again Bassey did 2 with connery and Sinatra did one. this is a favorite song of mine.
@danielseaman007 You can't honestly say that Bassey's shriek is better than Sinatra's sexy soft voice? Thank god they didn't get Bassey to "shriek" this one. Sinatra did a much better job of it.
This is without doubt THE best ever film score. It's seductive, classy and evocative. What a song, what a tune and Nancy Sinatra - what a voice!!! It's one of my desert island discs - deffo!
Hey if you saw this movie "You Only Live Twice" James Bond is kille on the bed, buried on the sea, just to fake his death.......... Isn't the same story of what happened to Osama Bin Laden? Just a thought....... Question, always question.....
@carlosperezvidal No, he did two more, Diamonds Are Forever and Never Say Never Agains which was a Thunderball reboot that doesn't count in the series.
This is my favorite song. I heard it quite a bit when I was little on the ez-listening station. I really began to feel my age when I found out years later it was made in 67, the year I was born. They don't make music like this anymore.
@ScubaSteveM45 You have a good ear. I saw the video Millenium by Robbie Williams when it was first released and said to myself, "Yes, Robbie Williams is indeed a James Bond fan."
@derrangedmutha see it took me a while to catch on, the melody was familiar but lacking cable TV when his Millennium song came out, I never got to see the video until years later, then it clicked for me.
@ScubaSteveM45 I think the entire music video is homage to James Bond. At the beginning he's dressed in the style of Sean Connery. I was in 5th grade when I first heard that song. It wasn't until a few years later, on the Space Channel, they were doing a James Bond marathon when I watched You Only Live Twice where it clicked.
@olias88 Well yeah, obviously with the tuxedos, hot girls in 60's era clothes and the Aston Martins, all 007 requisites. I wish I got to see that video around the time when that song he had came out.
@ScubaSteveM45 I remember seeing the release on Much Music here in Vancouver when Much Music actually had decent stuff to play; the old school channel 29. Unfortunately then, I wasn't a James Bond fan so I failed to see the reference
@3friend The music of this film, apart from the stock Bond chase/fight/tension background music, is in a class apart from the other Bond movies. I don't think it clicked with the public, and tellingly there's not one note of the title song or the film's other non-stock Bond orchestration in the theatrical trailer. But whether it's the Japanese traditional segments or the title song themes, this other music puts the stock Bond movie music to shame.
Only the tune got better for one more Bond film but "You only live twice" is where they lost it IMHO: an unconvincing comic villain, Connery's wig and 007 married made for an unlikely plot.
