I don't think many commenters here understood this. Lefsetz wasn't saying that there aren't great bands today. He was saying that today's great bands are mostly unknown and hard to find in the profusion of lousy bands, and that the well-known bands aren't very good. The major labels have collapsed because of stealing through the internet. I disagree with him about other things not mentioned here, i.e. that bands should give away their music and make thier money at gigs selling souvenir t-shirts.
Thanks re/ my favorited music, yes I'm from those good old days :)
As far as Lefsetz he sometimes actually makes sense.Where he blows it is when he rails against something or someone and if they contact him and there's an exchange all the sudden he' sells out and is in harmony with them....In other words he's just a loud mouthed putz with no actual experience in the music industry.
And The Hour, as always, rocks. Saw George S watching Winnipeg band Inward Eye from the wings at the Rivoli in Toronto during Canada Music Week. Once again, George picks a winner.
Another old fart crying about how it was so much better in the old days .I like how he rags on the white stripes for being "just a gimmick",but then he mentions the beatles, who at the begging were all about gimmicks .So was Hendrix,Black Sabbath, and sex pistols etc etc etc .Having a gimmick to your band is essential,if you want to stand out from the crowd .Trust me,if you don't have a gimmick, you are just another band that no one cares about .
Hendrix, Sabbath I am not a fan of though they did inspire a lot of people to form bands! I am though a huge fan of the Sex Pistols and punk rock and still listen to punk rock 30 years later old and new but my question is to you what did you view as a gimmick for the Sex Pistols, Sabbath and Hendrix? How do you know it was them just being themselves?
You're a dumbass if you are looking for answers from Tommy Lee.

Once in a while Bob comes off as a bit of old foogey. Most of of the time I'm right there with him though.

@Dissiprin Couldn't agree more. Love his insights but every now and then does seem trapped in nostalgia.

Bob is so right it's scary. When we live in an era where tracks are sold, and not cds, one hit wonders are king.

Just watched the Gene Simmons video with this Comic Book Guy look alike.
Just who is this guy anyways? He spews all this crap about the music business but never was in the trenches.

Nice music from the good old days you have favorited. Hmm, could this comic book guy possibly be on to something?

music is next to impossible to debate. one person's trash is another man's treasure.

I actually enjoyed listening to this debate. George did a very nice job holding his own against this cynical music pundit.

Bob has obviously not heard many of the great acts out there today. Yes, one must look sometimes, but that doesn't mean that they don't exist.

A dishonest George said: "I wish we could talk for another week".
KlipKultur 3 years ago
I don't think he is being dishonest. I think he would go for a friendly debate.

Good music is about good feeling. The White Stripes are awesome.
