  • veena and tavil is enough!!!!!!!!!

  • Where is the humility, where is the tradition? Hard to watch....A very skilled player, but the great masters of olden times where not fools. They thought of all the combinations and decided on certain ones to pass on. Fusion is a failure, just an experiment. What is the the shaking of the head part... is that the moksha part? I do that in the shower every morning! ha ha...But yes, I know, he has many fans. Let it be. There are still artists carrying on tradition like K.S. Narayanaswami's bhani.

  • omg...loveeeee! I play the veena and could never be inspired by the music I make with it..but man, this! this is a whole different thing altogether. Omg. i'm floored.

  • whats really the point of sharing what you dont like with the world on the web?

Music is a healing force. Always!

If you dont like the mirror it does not really help you to destroy it in any way....

Maby to deep, but still......... :)

  • artist is not the one who enjoys himself in action, but the one who enjoys himself in action while putting the audience into the same feeling that he/she is in. This video has truly exemplified excellence. Music is something that leads to moksha, not just to the performer but for the audience too. I am overwhelmed at the performance.

  • This Keyboard artist is fantastic (i cannot comment about vaidhya)

  • this thavil isartist is fantastic!(i cannot comment about vaidhya)

  • this nadaswaram artist ia fantastic!(i cannot comment about vaidhya)

  • just amazing!!!

  • Thats my song of the year; no other song can compare. 5:53 was a highlight for me respect from the US

  • This is just toooooo gooood for words..He is amazing

  • Awesome fusion!!!!!

  • Its taking me somewhere, to another world!

    How does he play that?

    He's incredible!

  • This guy is clearly feeling the music and having a great time. Sometimes Carnatic music is made inaccessible as it is couched in sombre heavily orthodox overtones. Thavil is fine, perhaps they can do mixing better. But including Thavil really energized the performance

  • Nice fusion programs,Thavil Mr.Karunamoorthy Allepy is great and veena also good. But the other instruments are not matching to this fusion.

  • VEENA IS SWEET INSTRUMENT ..THAVIL HAS NO "NADAM" ..IT HAS FLAT & BARE SOUND AND LOUD TOO..SUITED EXCELLENTLY TO NADASWARAM... AND RAJESH HAD NOT USED ELECTRIFIED VEENA.. YOU COULD HERE ONLY THE SOUND OF THAVIL...BOTH ARE NOT MATCHING BOTH IN SOUND AND LOUDNESS..

  • @sregnathan You've no idea of music. Stupid comment

  • Thavil and Veena are great, but Thavil for Veena is definitely annoying ........

  • Ravanan Decent

  • THAVIL IS SUITED ONLY FOR NADASWARAM....AND NOT FOR ANY OTHER INSTRUMENTS....VEENA HAS SWEET SOFT SOUND...ONLY MRIDANGAM OR THABALA IS SUITED....

  • @sregnathan Iis it wrong to try something new?

  • I want to know who r those 30+ viewers who clicked dislike... I feel those viewers wil not be having thumbs... In case any one has it pl clik my reply button. If anyone supports this statement - cut n repost this status...:)

    - by myself.

  • THAVIL IS NOT SUITED FOR THIS....

  • @sregnathan Are you deaf?

  • friggin brilliant!

  • I love this guy

  • I happend to see RV on a PBS Documentary about music (in US). I was reading a book, not paying attention at all until he started playing. The weird thing is that before I was even "listening" to the music, I actually felt the music- if that makes any sense. This music is all new to me, and I am in awe. :-)

  • This is really good

  • He is very fluent in veena and always smiling too.I love him playing any song. It's very nice to hear the songs from veena-voyage titles.

  • it is uptight. the guitar hasn't always been a contemporary instrument, but do you think that andres sgovia hated the beatles? ravi shankar didn't.... pull the stick out

  • What grave?

  • dont be uptight, that was one of the coolest things i have seen in a long time

  • @vavuhlghomes its not being uptight... the sangathis are pretty mundane

  • Comment removed

  • Totally devoid of gamaka, creativity. Only showmanship. Would make the great masters turn in their graves.

  • What grave? What masters? Do you want music to remain stagnant?

  • extraordinary

  • Spectacular rendition on Veena. Very upbeat and rhythymic version of Raghuvamsha. Entire band did an amazing job. Kudos.

  • what is the instrument?

  • @Nevidia1 a sitar.

  • @TheCarlos782 ...its not a sitar ...its a Veena ...dont just make wild guesses!!!

  • @Nevidia1 ...Its a Veena !

  • LoL, the leftmost drummer makes u stand up and dance :))))

  • superb absolutely jaw dropping toe tapping

  • This is amazing! He's such a good veena player. I'm going to see him in concert in Chicago :) yay

  • @monicaveena where can one find his touring schedule !?!? his website isnt uptodate

  • wow gr8

  • hats off.......

  • hats off..............

  • As much as I love this piece, I'm a little disappointed that the mridangam piece was too short to do any justice! :(

  • Nataraj >>> Most enjoyable. It may be a deviation from the traditional classical one, but please enjoy this. Most rejuvenating rendition.

  • Comment removed

  • what is the drum being played besides the tabla and mridangam.

  • @lozoft9 Thavil

  • wpada w ucho ;)

  • Excellent!!!

  • Excellent!!!

  • This video seems to have offended some. But isn't art is all about learning something off the books and using creativity to extend it? Vaidhya has just done that. He is not performing; rather he is living his music and it shows. Hard to imagine how this could depressing anybody. Hats off to his skills.

  • @ajitdb I'm an outsider, please forgive, I don't understand the nuances of traditional Indian music but I appreciate the gentleman's lamentations on this breakaway from the norm. Still I can't help admire the skill of RV and his friends. To perform any classical music you need to be a technician rather than an artist. You're copying. Some classical musicians can't improvise at all so I would say that RV is an artist more than a mere technician. Let the technicians be and the artist be.

  • god save India and her riches from fading away completely...

  • @krishnathirumalai God save India from old bags like you who only stunt her progress in becoming the most developed nation.

  • Too bad there aren't people to guide the society today and that is perhaps the only reason why such concerts even take place.. I can guarantee this Vaidhya would not even make it to a roadside concert with this attitude if he were living some 50 years back... India is rotting in all fields thanks to westernization.. I just wish some miracle would happen....

  • @TheManOnTheLongRoad: This one is definately for you man... ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD>>>SERIOUSLY

  • @haricgn: I do agree i am a big fan of greats like Balachander.S Emani Shankar Shastri and Doraiswamy Iyengar. This is not the way to play any instrument... Rajesh Vaidhya plays the instrument well because of the taleem he received and also his hard work but this is just a way of mocking himself.. God give these clowns some brains, in the name of popularizing Classical music these goons are destroying it...

  • Wah wonderful... The perfect mockery of music. I cant believe people call him a vainika. Its depressing to see music strangling itself in the hands of such people.. Fusion is great to hear, the only negative is that it ruins classical musicians altogether and classical music too.

  • Absolutely great. Transcending, inspiring and full of joy. Thats the indian equivalent of our Yamandu Costa. Greetings from Brazil and thanks for sharing.

  • waah ..!!

it is Brahma vidhya ... not very easy ...

the expressions are all enough to steal the show ..

  • This guy is great. Check him out on a website called playingforchange

He seems like such a nice guy!!

  • ideally suited for weddings and such occasions....but not for classical audiences:P

    but still, quite good

  • @sudbonbon :) i think so too. But he's got talent- you can't deny that. Have you seen his other (more sensible) videos? He can play classical just as well. Its just that he doesn't go much into it. Likes experimenting more like. Remix types.

  • It's interesting to see someone playing chords on the veena, which is not usually done. Very innovative. That thavil player is excellent!

  • A true maestro......invincible guy in playing veena

  • Before more trollers criticize him on being *cheap* consider listening to hes other videos :)

  • Brilliant!

  • That drum on the left is so awesome!!! Are those bamboo shoots on his fingers?

  • cheap!

  • I like all types of music, be it traditional or fusion, as long it is played well in an integral manner. But this music is a cheap trade-off. With very cheap harmonic sounds from the back. Well people who don't understand classical music may love this, but rajesh vaidhya to me is plain sell out. L. Subramanium, John McLaughlin on the other hand produce authentic Indian fusion.

  • @ the chacko.. s.. u're ryt..

  • 4:11 is funny and i love it

  • this is called playing with your heart

  • this man really speaks through his instrument. amazing

  • Chanceless!

  • This reminds me of an excellent Indian restaurant I've been to in my area...maan, now I wanna go there!

  • absolutely wonderful!

  • Pure Perfection!

  • Magnificent Dhawil

  • it reminds me of bluegrass in places.

  • this is just too cool!

  • Love all of his performances, since I became aware of this incredible Master, when i first discovered him playing on the documentary film "Playing For Change." His music is ecstatic, spiritual, and so many other things, all of them straight from our Divine Sourcce. As an aspiring musician he will always be for me on of my greatest inspirations. Tip for first listeners: try listening to his music while meditating.

  • I like the man who played the percussion towards the left, beside the mridangam. And Damn! Rajesh is playing Fast!...

  • This video is so infectious just wanna get up and dance.!

  • I wonder why they have to pick up such divine kritis to experiment on drums!!!! why dont just pick up a Bryan adams song!

  • love the music and the cuties in the far end of the stage!

  • toke me 3 hours to find the name of this instument veena

  • i just love to hear this when ever he plays even though it has some short comings and cant fuly satisfy hard core purists, but when he plays it has some feel good factor, and keeps u upbeat,,

  • in my opinion the drumwork was amazing!! just as the whole song! greetings from hungary :)

  • fab: no doubt : it is hard to work out with veena

  • Beautifully played, the variations are amazing. By the way, is this a varnam by Lal Gudi Jayaraman that he has adapted?

  • )))

  • why does one person have to clap out the beat...?

  • Amazing!

  • That drummer was jammin out so hard

    SWEET VIDEO ALSO

  • Wow this is amazing. It gave me the idea of a sunny spring day, where the bees starts gathering honey, pretty flowers... everybody happy. I loved this music. Amazing wonderful artists. Respect from USA.

  • I dont agree . This is absolutely fine music.

  • Ah! yes they be jamming

  • you got a lot to learn...

  • awesome video . God bless you. Can I ask u a favor. Dr chittibabu had composed some western tunes and I used to listen to them at my uncles house. I am unable to find. Do you have it?. If so could you please upload it.

    Thanks

    Sunny - USA

  • one of my friend is a thavil player too :-)

  • thavil player is too good to be true.. he is extraordinary!!

  • His the best..!!!

  • this guy is genius.. i saw him in play for change and searched for his some other works and found it. this is really great... good job

  • me too

  • me too

  • me three

  • A different representation and interpretation of the evergreen and ever melodious MASTERPIECE of a composition!!!

  • A galaxy in RAGHUVAMSA !!!

  • Very good, such lucidity while sliding across frets.

  • Simply superb...

  • the total team rocked

  • music can infact be anything.carnatic musicians might feel distant from the chromatism of bella bartok.the thing about music is if it is played for one two or many.

  • dont know what to say...but MBK does the same while singing sometimes

  • woow cool:D

  • I think Veena is the most beautiful and unique instrument.....

  • well Said! I also think so..

  • the Veena is a beautiful instrument :).

  • Easy to comment.. Why judge.. U like it listen , u dont then skip it.. Music is universal and purest religious form exisiting.

  • Why don't they understand that unrestrained and infinite creativity can be done still being in the boundaries of any classical dance form?

Every person has a freedom to dance his / her own way but then they also should NAME it their own way...Isn't it????

  • I dont understand tat i enjoy his music,,, but when it comes to BN my views changing...

i dont think that i can accept somone perfoming fusion telling its bharathanatyam... actually, the tradition which carried in its purest form since last 2000 years is simply losing / changing its form because of people who want to prove their creativity!!!

How can one think of changing the style or way of dancing...while thinking creatively...?

  • great mixing of the fusion. I especially loved the introduction of the minor note in Kadanakuthuhalam at the thrid line of Anupallavi

  • He is not just anyone, he is very good he played for movie songs!. i'll find one song sample and you people who hates it because it's diffrent will be shocked.! I am not saying Veena should not be played in classical way, because I love the Classical played Raagams.!

  • This sorts of fusions aren't really my cup of tea either, although I do believe that they can serve as softer introductions to audiences that might not otherwise get exposure to classical indian music. This just makes it more palatable, and leaves it to the listener to explore perhaps less "watered down" varieties on their own if they choose :) I don't think that it's rubbish, just not my cup of tea.

  • I'm not a Hindu but i love this kind of music whatever you call it.This is real ethnic music that i can relate to though I'm not Indian.Everything else complicates when you don't see the real essence of what these wonderful musicians are doing.

  • he's jammin man it's new age hindu, no disrespect intended

  • This is like the Hindu equivalent of "Christian rock" in America, it just does not look right.

  • Cut the crap man.... There is no point in being a sober fool without expressions... Dont be prejudiced because he shakes his head... He is as much austere as anyone.. coz otherwise his music wouldnt be sounding great... Ppl like him are taking carnatic to a more international audience and ppl from all over the world have started to notice... If u dont want to listen, stop crapping and go watch something else...

  • I don't like this semi-classical / fusion rubbish.

  • it is not rubbish. it is just something you dont like.

  • Fantastic!!my kids shashank and sathvik always love to watch this video!!thanks for posting...

  • Thank you for posting this. Really enjoyed hearing these great musicians :)

  • wow!!! both Rajesh Vaidya's veena and tavil were awesome!

  • Rajesh Vaidya is absolutely stunning...watch how he seems to make all of his playing effortless. The tavil player is amazing as well...I plan on learning how to play :)

  • I am always refreshed to see an Indian musician so willing to explore western music through a traditional instrument. So often, Indian musicians are very reserved in respect to this idea.

  • wow...beautiful..

  • SIMPLY SUPERB.. i am speechless, my mother was used to play veena.......

  • Fantastic !!! Being a veena player myself, I am simply astounded by his speed and skills ....

  • absolutely divine. God bless the person you has uploaded this. He/she made my day.

  • awesome....

  • His energy is positive, and it is clear he loves working with these other arits who share his passion. It is his way of expressing his faith, and its time we became more energetic in our faith. After all, doesn't Shakti, our beloved goddess, mean 'Energy'?

  • Why does everyone write comments about Bhakthi because he moves around and gets into his music? I am a Hindu and my mother is a fantastic Carnatic musician. I come from that type of background, and for too long our musicians have been immobile and unfeeling when they express their love for god. So what if he moves and smiles as he plays the divine lyric?

  • I think his movement really is a testament to his bhakti.

  • I don't watch most videos, I just listen to the music and these musicians are awesome!

  • AWESOME LOVE! People like you and your group should get NOBEL PEACE PRIZES! Your smile is so happy it warms my heart. What strikes me the deepest is that if I had made any other choice in life or not faced the fears I faced I may not have ever heard this level of musical expression. God bless the divine guidance that leads us to all the divine gifts, you are all certainly there in my heart. Peace, Namaste and every other praiseworthy mumbo jumbo you can think of!

    R@Hanumans Palace, Costa Rica

  • It's a free world and people express music or bakthi bhava the way they want plus bhakti is a very relative term and there's no way one can guage it..

  • Kudos!Bahkti has been "guaged" by sages and the manifestations are evident in the participant.Nonjudgementalism is one trait of true bakhtas. These musicians are existing beside any "judgement" therefore they are real and the judgements are subtle aftereffects in our mind.We can guage ourselves by listening to our thoughts.Still, the "REAL" goes on within and without us. Awesome Music!

  • Even in this free wolrd there is no cabaret in any temple. This is education without character.

  • Yes, if the music is a sacred piece then it ought to be played in austerity.

  • music is just few frequencies of sounds and vibrations. Some people like some type of vibration and some people other types. Its a matter of opinion. there should be any rules where, when and how it should be played. it should be enjoyed. and variation is always good.

  • There is just like show of how skillfully can the veena be played and no bhakti bhava. and body movements are absurd

  • Well said.

  • bhakti has nothing to do with judging others, that is the very essense.

  • that includes not judging others judgment.

  • Musical skill is ok. But where is the Bhakthi part of lyric playing. It looks like more of a cinema setting. No real Bhakthi Bhava in none of their faces.

His skill may be good, but his mannerisms and expressions while palying the divine lyric are totally obnoxious.

Let this fellow play his own songs than these disrespectful concerts.

  • i went to his concert in Canada and it was excellent.I saw many of his programs in India.
