Yes, that was Kathleen Nolan who was on The Real McCoys. Martin did two live versions of the show (1955 and 1956). In 1960 while she was doing THE SOUND OF MUSIC, NBC produced the color version on videotape and that is the version that got several broadcasts. That is the one that got a legal release on both VHS and DVD. I believe both are now out of print.
Everyone thinks that the Broadway musical ran a long time. Not true. Ran around 100 performances. The revival with Sandy Duncan ran longer.
I don't care how people psychoanalzye this, it is one of the most charming musicals ever. I grew up and lived for the time it was broadcast. I wore the record out and still have it. I saw the revival in NYC w. Sandy Duncan, and though heartbroken that Cyril Richard died a few months before opening, was totally enthralled.
@brabon1 I agree... there needs to be a dvd reissue with the 1960 version and the 55 and 56 live broadcasts as bonus features. This is the first time I've ever seen clips of the live versions, and I love Kathleen Nolan as Wendy so much more even from just these little clips.
@brabon1 This unfortunately has been the case with several television musicals that were redone for color. The same applies to the Rogers and Hammerstein CINDERELLA. The 1957 original version was superior to the 1965 version which also saw repeats for the next five years. Fortunately, both versions are now available for comparison.
@jooodlez I know, right? I had no idea either. She did it well, for sure. Must have been like "somewhere over the rainbow" for Judy Garland. I'm sure she loved performing it all those years.
FABULOUS!!!...this really brought tears to my eyes.....the wonderful memories.....Mary Martin was Peter Pan and still remains the BEST Peter Pan ever in this WONDERFUL musical.....where can I purchase the kinescope versions of this classic?....the 1960 color version should be re-released on dvd along with both black and white kinescope versions......now that would truly be a SPECIAL EDITION for a lot of people who grew up with Mary Martin as Peter Pan!!!!!.....
I saw Kathleen Nolan follow in Mary Martin's footsteps at the Jones Beach Marine Theater (today the expanded Nikon at Jones Beach Theater). She starred as Nellie Forbush in Guy Lombardo's glorious production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific" co-starring Jerome Hinds and Barney Martin. Ms. Nolan's performance was engergetic, romantic and electrifying. In short, she made the role her own while presenting a wonderful homage to Mary Martin.
Was this the same Kathy Nolan that played Kate (Sugar Babe) on The Real McCoys? I heard she took an absence from that show when he got into a very bad car accident back in the 60s. I believe Kate McCoy was played by Kathy Nolan.
Mary Martin did "Peter Pan" for NBC-TV three times.
The first two times were in 1955 and 1956, and were broadcast live and in color. But only black-and-white kinescopes exist of these two versions.
In 1960, Martin did "Peter Pan" for NBC a third time, which was taped in color. This version was repeated annually through 1970, and occassionally since then. It's on DVD.
oh wow ive never seen this version ive only seen mary martin in color. i watched peter pan when i was very little prolly 4 it was my first musical, and i became obssesed, Peter Pan is my favorite musical, and mary martin is my favorite peter ppan. I always longed to be able to be in this musical throughout my life, and i finallly got to be peter last summer in the straight play . my lifelong goal is to be peter pan on broadway :)
I was 6 years old when I saw this. I immediately made my mom make me a Peter Pan outfit which I wore continually. Still have the outfit in mint condidtion. When I grew up (not on purpose) I presented PETER PAN in a lavish marionette form at the Chrysler Museum in Va., then later played Capt. Hook in a musical stage production! Just Peter Pan crazy. Could you post another scene? This is such a treat! Thanks for posting.
I remember watching this and trying to fly

i just realized that maureen bailey the girl who played wendy in 1960 passed away a few months ago.

Man, such a shame that the surviving popular one has much more annoying kids.
bkev93 1 year ago
@bkev93 The kids were not as annoying as Maureen Bailey's portrayal of Wendy.
Prevviously, she was "Chistmas Carol" in the J.L. Hudson Thanksgiving/Christmas Parade in Detroit.

cinderella, peter pan, wizard of oz

Goosebumps and tears here. This was my favorite annual television event as a little girl. The Wizard of Oz was a distant second.

@tinascar me too...but it seems that the one that i saw was the 60 version....which is too bad, because both the 55 and 56 versions seem better
in between showings i listened to the cast album...till it got too scratched up
