There are 2 different versions of this poem. This one, which was written about the death of the authors gay lover, then there was the original that was used in a play by Auden (The Ascent of F6, 1936). The original had 5 verses in total, whereas this one has 4. The original had the same first two verses, but the three following it were different. It was the original that was meant to be sarcastic, not this one.

Auden ment for this poem to be a sarcastic expression of how he resented funerals. He really didn't like them. But I don't care. I reject his original intention and steal his beautiful words and attach my own meaning to them.

It's beautiful and quite appropriate for how some people feel about a loved one that has died.

okay, okay, so the original was a five stanza poem that was meant to be sarcastic but Auden still rewrote it with the last two stanzas being completely different. this poem is an entirely different poem from the first one, june161904, because although the first two stanzas are the same, within context of the last two it IS supposed to be sad and mournful. don't be so bitter. you can keep things and rewrite them and give them an entirely different meaning/sense of integrity.

I really can't see how you think this poem is sarcastic. Okay I can understand oh the first two verses could be seen as mocking the false state funerals but, 'I thought love would last forever. I was wrong.' That is not sarcasm. But yeah, everyone can take what they want from it.

The poem is supposed to be sarcastic. It's meant to lampoon the false mourning people have to show when a head of state dies. Not really a good choice for the film. I guess if you want to make your own meaning of it though, that's ok. I know when my dad died, i took lots of poems out of context. Maybe its just part of mourning to be bombastic like that and not notice it.

How strange I would come across this video!I lost my husband 7 years ago. I remember very little about the arrangements.What does stay with me and everyone at the funeral is the memory of our 9 yr. old, 12 yr. old, and 15 year old children speaking about their Dad. All I could contribute was reading this poem. What a wonderful contribution it was.
